Chapter 8: The Truth My Grandfather Left Behind

The old law office smelled like dust and rain.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was the portrait hanging behind the desk.

My grandfather.

Watching.

Like he knew we would eventually end up there.

The man behind the desk stood as we entered.

“Maya.””

I stopped.

“How do you know me?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because I knew your grandfather.””

My father stepped forward.

“You called us.””

“Yes.””

The lawyer looked at Daniel.

Then Nicole.

Then back at me.

“Your grandfather left instructions that this meeting should only happen when you were old enough to understand.””

My father frowned.

“Understand what?””

The lawyer opened a drawer.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“Everything.””

My hands tightened.

“Is that from him?””

The lawyer nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at the envelope.

For years, I thought my grandfather left me money.

A trust.

Something financial.

But now I realized he left me something else.

A warning.

The lawyer handed it to me.

“Before you open it, there is something you need to know.””

Nobody moved.

“Your grandfather didn’t die peacefully.””

My father looked at him.

“What?””

The lawyer sighed.

“Officially, it was ruled a heart attack.””

“And unofficially?””

The lawyer looked at me.

“He was investigating someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

The lawyer didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Someone inside the family.””

Nicole covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at the floor.

My father went silent.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The ink was faded.

But the words were clear.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you myself.*

My eyes filled.

*There are people who will tell you family is about blood. They are wrong. Family is about who chooses you when things become difficult.*

I looked at my father.

He looked away, emotional.

I continued.

*Richard was always your father. I knew that from the moment I saw him hold you for the first time.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then I reached the next part.

*But I also knew someone would eventually try to use your inheritance.*

My heart raced.

*The person you should fear is not the person who betrayed you today.*

I stopped.

Not Nicole?

I kept reading.

*Your mother made mistakes. Terrible ones. But she was manipulated.*

Everyone became still.

The lawyer spoke quietly.

“Your grandfather believed someone was controlling Nicole.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked broken.

The letter continued.

*The person behind everything is someone who has been close to this family for years. Someone who knows every weakness.*

I turned the page.

And froze.

There was a name.

A name that made no sense.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had comforted me.

Someone who had stood beside my family through every crisis.

I looked up.

“Is this real?””

The lawyer nodded.

“Yes.””

My father took the letter.

His face changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked over.

“What?””

My father handed him the page.

Daniel read it.

Then stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at them.

“Who is it?””

Neither answered.

The lawyer finally spoke.

“Your grandfather believed the person responsible was…”

The office door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

And completely unexpected.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Nicole.””

My mother looked terrified.

The lawyer stood immediately.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The woman ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Maya.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized her.

She had been in the photograph.

The woman standing beside my mother and Daniel the day I was born.

Daniel whispered:

“My sister.””

The woman smiled.

“I think it’s time you learned the truth.””

My father stepped forward.

“What truth?””

She looked directly at me.

“The truth that your mother didn’t choose between two fathers.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“She chose between saving you and destroying someone else.””

The room went silent.

And then she placed a file on the desk.

A file with my name on it.

And underneath my name was a date.

May you like

The day I was born.

*Maya Carter.*
