Chapter 9: The Child Who Could Hear Secrets

The recording ended with a click.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For several seconds, the only sound inside my father’s basement was the faint hum of the old house settling around us.

Then Sarah whispered the question none of us wanted to ask.

“Why Maya?””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He looked at the recorder.

Then at the hidden room.

Then at my daughter.

“I don’t know yet.””

That answer wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

I had spent fourteen months accepting uncertainty because I had no choice.

I accepted unanswered phone calls.

Empty searches.

Cold nights staring at a bedroom that would never open.

I accepted strangers telling me to be patient.

But I would not accept another person taking my child while I stood there waiting.

I picked up the recorder.

“Where is he?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“David.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m done finding pieces of the truth.””

I held up the recorder.

“He left this here because he wanted us to find it.””

I looked around the hidden room.

“He wants us following him.””

Anthony, who had joined the search with police protection, stepped closer.

“He always did that.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Anthony stared at the recorder.

“Richard liked making people choose.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You know him.””

Anthony looked away.

“I knew him better than anyone.””

The words carried years of pain.

“He never just took people.””

Anthony continued.

“He made them feel like they were responsible.””

Detective Harris crossed his arms.

“Explain.””

Anthony swallowed.

“Richard believed people showed their true selves under pressure.””

I felt sick.

“So this was an experiment?””

Anthony nodded.

“Children were his proof.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Proof of what?””

Anthony looked at Maya.

“That fear reveals who people really are.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my daughter.

A six-year-old girl who had already lost her brother once.

A child who had spent months trying to be strong for adults who couldn’t protect her.

Richard didn’t see her as a person.

He saw her as an answer to some twisted question.

And that made my anger burn hotter.

Detective Harris examined the recorder.

“There may be fingerprints.””

“Will that help?””

He didn’t answer.

It wouldn’t.

Not enough.

Not against someone who had spent years disappearing.

Then Maya walked into the room.

I turned immediately.

“Maya, what are you doing here?””

She looked at me.

“I wanted to help.””

“No.””

I knelt.

“You need to stay with Mom.””

“But I know where he is.””

Every person froze.

“What?””

Maya looked toward the hidden door.

“He showed me.””

Sarah grabbed her hand.

“Who showed you?””

“The man from my dreams.””

My heart sank.

“Maya.””

She looked scared.

“But he isn’t scary.””

That frightened me more.

“What do you mean?””

“He was sad.””

Nobody spoke.

Maya continued.

“He said he made a mistake.””

Anthony went pale.

“What did he look like?””

Maya turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Anthony looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Maya.””

She answered quietly.

“He had a scar.””

Anthony sat down.

Because he knew.

“Richard.””

Maya nodded.

“He said his name was Richard.””

The room changed.

Because this was no longer a stranger hunting us.

This was someone who had been communicating with my daughter.

Someone who had entered her mind long before we understood.

Detective Harris immediately ordered everyone outside.

“Maya, listen to me.””

He crouched beside her.

“Did Richard tell you where he was?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She pointed toward the recorder.

“Where the first door was.””

My blood ran cold.

“The ranch?””

She nodded.

“He said Dad would come there.””

The police moved quickly.

But before we left, Anthony stopped me.

“David.””

I turned.

His face was filled with regret.

“If you find Richard…”

“What?””

Anthony hesitated.

“Don’t let him talk.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Anthony looked at Maya.

“Richard doesn’t need weapons.””

A pause.

“He uses words.””

The drive back to the ranch was silent.

No one spoke.

Everyone knew what waited there.

The property looked different when we arrived.

Not because it had changed.

Because I had.

This was where I lost Leo.

Where I spent nights searching fields.

Where I begged God for answers.

And now my daughter had brought us back.

Police surrounded the area.

Detective Harris led the team toward the old tunnels.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stopped.

I answered.

“Richard.””

A soft laugh.

“You finally learned.””

My grip tightened.

“Where is my daughter?””

A pause.

Then:

“Safe.””

“You don’t get to use that word.””

“She was always different.””

My anger exploded.

“She is a child.””

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“She is a door.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

“You never wondered why she found Leo?””

I looked toward Maya.

My daughter stood beside Sarah.

Listening.

Richard continued.

“She hears things.””

I said nothing.

“She hears what people hide.””

My throat tightened.

“The voices.””

“Yes.””

The silence after that answer was terrifying.

Richard knew.

He knew everything.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because I taught her.””

My blood turned cold.

“No.””

“Yes, David.””

His voice softened.

“Before Leo disappeared.””

I stopped breathing.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard whispered:

“Ask your wife where she was the night Maya was born.””

The call ended.

I stared at Sarah.

Her face had gone completely white.

“Sarah?””

She looked away.

And that was when I realized something I never wanted to believe.

May you like

There was another secret.

One my wife had been carrying.
