Chapter 3: The Room Beneath the Room
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Twenty minutes felt like an eternity.
I kept expecting Mark to appear.
A shadow outside the window.
A figure behind the trees.
A man walking calmly through the front door like he owned the place.
But nothing happened.
That scared me more.
People who panic make mistakes.
People who wait are usually prepared.
Detective Harris arrived with two officers and immediately separated everyone.
I hated it.
I hated watching strangers take Leo away from me again.
I hated watching him sit on a couch answering questions from people who didn’t know his favorite cereal, his fear of thunderstorms, or how he used to fall asleep holding my old baseball glove.
“I need him with me,” I told Harris.
The detective looked at me carefully.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked toward Leo.
“You’re right. I don’t.””
His voice softened.
“But I need to understand what happened.””
Leo sat quietly.
Then he looked at me.
I nodded.
“Tell them.””
Leo swallowed.
“Mark took me from Grandpa’s house.””
Every person in the room became still.
“He knew the gate.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“He knew?””
Leo nodded.
“He said nobody would look in the right places.””
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Did he hurt you?””
Leo looked at the floor.
“He said he was protecting me.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was insane.
“He told me my family forgot me.””
Sarah started crying.
“He said that?””
Leo nodded.
“He showed me pictures.””
“What pictures?””
“Pictures of you.””
I felt cold.
“He said you moved on.””
I looked at my wife.
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“I know.””
Leo’s voice cracked.
“He was lying.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
My son knew.
Even trapped in darkness, he knew we loved him.
Later that night, officers searched the hidden room.
They found blankets.
Food containers.
A small radio.
Books.
And something that made Detective Harris call me over.
A wall covered with photographs.
Not random photographs.
Our photographs.
My family.
My home.
My life.
Pictures taken without our knowledge.
Me leaving work.
Sarah buying groceries.
Maya playing at school.
Leo at my father’s ranch.
I stared at the wall.
Someone had studied us.
Someone had planned this.
Detective Harris touched one photograph.
“Do you recognize this?””
I looked.
It was Elena.
Standing outside my house.
“Why would he have pictures of my sister?””
Nobody answered.
Then Leo spoke.
“He hated Aunt Elena.””
Everyone turned.
Leo looked terrified.
“He said she ruined everything.””
I looked at Elena.
She was sitting across the room.
Crying silently.
“What did you do?””
She looked at me.
“I married him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She pressed her hands together.
“I found out what he was doing.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
She looked at Leo.
“I found out he had been watching your family before he took him.””
My anger returned.
“And you still protected him?””
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid?””
“He threatened me.””
“How?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He told me if I went to the police, he would tell everyone I helped him.””
I stared.
“Did you?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was devastating.
“I didn’t help him take Leo.””
“But?””
She looked away.
“I helped him hide afterward.””
The truth landed like a physical blow.
Sarah stood.
“You let us grieve.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You let me plan my son’s funeral.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You held my daughter while my son was dying under your floor.””
Elena collapsed.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Harris’s radio crackled.
An officer’s voice came through.
“Detective, we found something.””
Harris walked toward the front door.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“There’s another underground space.””
Everyone looked at each other.
Another space.
The detective turned to me.
“It’s not under the living room.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where?””
The officer answered:
“Under the bedroom.””
Elena went completely pale.
Because it was her bedroom.
May you like
And she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“That’s where Mark kept his secrets.””
