Chapter 2: The Man Elena Protected
The first thing I did was grab the fireplace poker.
The second thing I did was put myself between my children and the staircase.
No father should ever have to wonder if the danger is inside the house.
But standing there, hearing footsteps above us, I realized something worse.
The danger had been there all along.
Elena grabbed my arm.
“David, wait.””
I pulled away.
“Who is upstairs?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Sarah moved closer to me.
“Elena.””
My wife’s voice broke.
“You knew?””
Elena looked down.
“I knew someone was using the space.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know Leo was alive at first.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She covered her mouth.
“After he disappeared, I found the hidden room.””
Leo flinched.
I noticed.
A small movement.
But I noticed.
“You found it,” I repeated.
“Yes.””
“And you left him there?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought he was gone.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I heard noises.””
She looked at Leo.
“I thought someone was breaking into my house. I found the opening. I found him.””
My anger became something sharper.
“You found an eight-year-old boy hiding under your floor and you did nothing?””
“I panicked.””
“Fourteen months isn’t panic.””
The footsteps above stopped.
Everyone heard it.
A person standing still.
Listening.
Leo grabbed my hand.
“He’s here.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Leo whispered.
“The man who brought me food.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“Leo, honey, who was he?””
My son looked terrified.
“He told me not to say his name.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaking.
Elena’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“He can hear us.””
I looked at her.
“Who is he?””
She closed her eyes.
Then she said the name.
“Mark.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Elena added:
“My husband.””
Silence.
I remembered.
Mark.
The man who had vanished from Elena’s life months before Leo disappeared.
Everyone thought he left her.
Everyone thought he abandoned the marriage.
But now I understood.
Maybe he didn’t leave.
Maybe he hid.
Maya held Leo’s hand.
“Is he coming back?””
Before anyone answered, a phone started ringing.
Not mine.
Not Sarah’s.
Elena’s.
The sound came from the kitchen counter.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained.
“What?””
I stepped forward.
“Who is it?””
She couldn’t speak.
I grabbed the phone.
The caller ID showed one word.
MARK.
The phone continued ringing.
Leo started shaking.
“He knows I’m out.””
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a man’s voice came through.
“You should have left him where he was.””
My entire body went still.
Sarah grabbed my shoulder.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh.
“You always were stubborn, David.””
I froze.
“How do you know me?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because I watched you search.””
My blood turned cold.
The man continued.
“I watched you put his face on every street corner.””
I looked around the room.
The windows.
The doors.
The perfect walls.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had known everything.
“Why?”” I asked.
The voice became calmer.
Almost gentle.
“Because Leo was never supposed to survive.””
Elena covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
No answer.
The call ended.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
A photo.
My fingers went numb as I opened it.
It was Leo.
Taken underground.
But not fourteen months ago.
Tonight.
Minutes before I broke through the floor.
Someone had been there.
Someone had been recording.
May you like
And beneath the picture were six words:
*You found him too early, David.*
