Chapter 7: The Boy Who Came Back Wrong
Anthony Carter was sitting in a hospital room when we arrived.
At first glance, he looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
A man in his twenties wearing a gray hoodie.
Hands folded.
Eyes staring at the floor.
But then he looked up.
And I understood why Leo was afraid.
Because there was something familiar in his eyes.
Not evil.
Not cruel.
Something worse.
Someone who had survived something nobody should survive.
Detective Harris stood beside me.
“Anthony?””
The man looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Do you know David?””
Anthony looked at me.
Then at Leo.
“Yes.””
My body went rigid.
“How?””
Anthony didn’t answer.
He stared at my son.
“You look different.””
Leo stepped back.
I moved between them.
“Don’t talk to him.””
Anthony looked hurt.
“I’m not going to hurt him.””
“You already did.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
The room became silent.
Detective Harris pulled a chair forward.
“Anthony, we need answers.””
Anthony laughed quietly.
A sad sound.
“You all want answers now.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you looked for fourteen months.””
He looked at Leo.
“But you didn’t look seventeen years.””
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right.
His disappearance had become old news.
A forgotten headline.
A cold case.
A number.
Anthony looked at me.
“Mark wanted Leo because of me.””
I frowned.
“Explain.””
Anthony took a deep breath.
“Mark didn’t start this.””
“Who did?””
Anthony looked toward the window.
“The man who called you.””
My hands tightened.
“Who is he?””
Anthony whispered:
“Richard Cole.””
Elena covered her mouth.
The name again.
Anthony continued.
“Richard was the one who took me.””
The room changed.
Like everyone suddenly understood this was bigger than one person.
“How did you escape?””
Anthony looked down.
“I didn’t.””
Nobody moved.
“I was released.””
“By who?””
He looked at Leo.
“By Mark.””
My head spun.
“Why?””
“Because Mark realized Richard was planning to take another child.””
Leo.
Anthony nodded.
“Mark wasn’t the beginning.””
He paused.
“He was trying to stop him.””
I stared.
“No.””
Anthony looked at me.
“You think Mark was the monster because he locked your son away.””
“He did.””
“Yes.””
Anthony’s voice hardened.
“But Richard was the reason.””
The truth became more complicated.
And somehow that made it worse.
“Why didn’t Mark take Leo to the police?””
Anthony closed his eyes.
“Because Mark was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Richard.””
The room went quiet.
“He threatened everyone connected to him.””
Anthony looked at Elena.
“He threatened your sister too.””
I looked at Elena.
She nodded slowly.
“I thought Mark was the only one.””
Anthony shook his head.
“No.””
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Mark wasn’t hiding Leo from the world.””
He looked at me.
“He was hiding Leo from Richard.””
I felt anger and confusion collide.
“That doesn’t excuse what he did.””
“No.””
Anthony agreed.
“It doesn’t.””
The simplicity of his answer surprised me.
“He still stole your son.””
I looked at Leo.
My son was listening.
Processing.
Trying to understand why the person who hurt him was also afraid.
Then Anthony reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small piece of paper.
“I found this before I escaped.””
Detective Harris took it.
“What is it?””
Anthony looked at me.
“A list.””
The detective unfolded it.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
Children.
My stomach turned.
Then I saw the final entry.
The newest one.
The one with no date.
No location.
Just a name.
Maya.
My blood went cold.
“No.””
Anthony looked terrified.
“He knows about her.””
I grabbed my daughter immediately.
She buried her face against me.
Detective Harris picked up his phone.
“We need protection around this family now.””
Then the lights in the hospital flickered.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
A nurse screamed.
A man ran past the glass doors.
Detective Harris reached for his weapon.
But before anyone moved, my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, no photo.
