Chapter 8: The Name On The List
The next twenty-four hours felt like living inside someone else’s nightmare.
Police surrounded our house.
Maya and Leo were moved to a secure location.
Sarah refused to leave their side.
And I stayed awake every night staring at doors and windows, waiting for a man I couldn’t see.
Richard Cole had spent years hiding.
That made him more dangerous than anyone I had ever met.
Because monsters who hide learn patience.
Detective Harris arrived the next morning with new information.
“We found his truck.””
My body tensed.
“Where?””
“Near your father’s ranch.””
Of course.
The ranch.
The place where everything started.
“What was inside?””
Harris hesitated.
I already knew it was bad.
“Photographs.””
My stomach dropped.
“Of who?””
He looked at me.
“Maya.””
I closed my eyes.
The room disappeared for a second.
I saw her kneeling on Elena’s floor.
Her tiny hand touching the boards.
Her whisper.
Daddy… Leo is crying under the floor.
She had found Leo.
Now someone wanted her.
“Why her?””
Harris looked at the evidence folder.
“We’re still figuring that out.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No more waiting.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were pictures.
Maya at school.
Maya playing.
Maya sleeping in the backseat of my car.
Someone had watched her.
Someone had studied her.
Then I saw something written on the back of one photo.
A sentence.
*She hears what others cannot.*
I froze.
Maya.
The floor.
The voice.
The impossible moment when she found Leo.
Detective Harris noticed my expression.
“What?””
I handed him the picture.
He read it.
Then looked at me.
“Did Maya ever say anything else?””
I remembered.
Before she found Leo, she had been acting strange.
Quiet.
Distracted.
I had assumed grief changed her.
But maybe it was something else.
I rushed to the room where my family was staying.
“Maya.””
She looked up.
“Daddy?””
I knelt.
“Sweetheart, when you heard Leo under the floor…”
Her face changed.
Fear.
“What?””
“What else did you hear?””
She looked at Sarah.
Then Leo.
Finally, she whispered:
“Someone told me to find him.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Maya hugged herself.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you see him?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Only in my dreams.””
Sarah sat beside her.
“What dreams?””
Maya looked at me.
“The man said Leo wasn’t the only one.””
Nobody moved.
“What else did he say?””
Her voice became smaller.
“He said there was a door.””
I felt cold.
“A door?””
She nodded.
“Under Grandpa’s house.””
I stared.
“My father’s house?””
Maya nodded.
“He said you never looked there.””
Detective Harris immediately stood.
“David.””
I knew.
We were going back.
Again.
But this time, we weren’t searching for Leo.
We were searching for the truth.
When we reached my father’s old house, the police scanned every inch.
The place held memories.
Birthdays.
Family dinners.
Leo’s laughter.
Now it held secrets.
Then an officer called out.
“Detective!””
We ran toward the basement.
Behind an old shelf was a hidden door.
Not a tunnel entrance.
A door.
Exactly like Maya said.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a small room.
Empty.
Almost.
Except for one thing.
A chair.
And a recorder.
Detective Harris pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
Richard Cole.
“You always thought you lost your son because someone failed.””
A pause.
“You were wrong.””
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“You lost him because someone chose him.””
I looked at Leo.
He looked terrified.
Then Richard said the words that changed everything.
“The child I wanted was never Leo.””
Silence.
May you like
Then:
“It was Maya.””
