Chapter 9: The Truth Buried With the Dead
“Damon…”
The voice echoed from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Emma’s hand immediately found Lily’s.
Michael moved in front of them.
Damon stared at the dark staircase.
He had heard that voice before.
Not recently.
Not clearly.
But somewhere deep inside his memory.
A voice from childhood.
A voice from old family dinners.
A voice that belonged to someone he never expected to hear again.
“Come out,” Damon said.
No answer.
Then slow footsteps.
One step.
Then another.
A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
Damon stopped breathing.
Because the impossible had happened again.
Another person who was supposed to be gone was standing in front of him.
“Grandfather?””
The old man looked down.
His face was older.
His hair completely gray.
But Damon recognized him.
Arthur Whitmore.
His grandfather.
The man who supposedly died when Damon was twenty.
The man whose funeral Damon attended.
The man whose portrait hung beside his father’s in the company headquarters.
Nobody spoke.
Even Richard’s return hadn’t prepared Damon for this.
“You’re alive.””
Arthur slowly walked down the stairs.
“Yes.””
Damon’s voice became cold.
“How many people in my family are still pretending to be dead?””
Arthur looked at him.
“You have every right to hate me.””
“Hate you?””
Damon laughed quietly.
“You don’t know what that word means.””
Emma watched Arthur carefully.
She looked afraid.
Damon noticed.
“Emma?””
She whispered:
“He’s the one.””
Damon turned.
“The one what?””
“The one who helped me escape.””
The answer stunned him.
Arthur looked at Emma.
“You kept your promise.””
Emma nodded.
“I protected Lily.””
Damon looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Arthur sighed.
“Your father and Richard were not the only people involved.””
Damon’s expression hardened.
“Of course not.””
He stepped closer.
“Everyone has another secret.””
Arthur accepted the anger.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then give it to me.””
Arthur looked at the old house.
“This family was built on a lie.””
Damon shook his head.
“I’ve heard that before.””
“This time, listen.””
Arthur walked toward the table and placed a small folder down.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
“The Whitmore company was never just a business.””
Damon looked at the papers.
“What was it?””
“A battlefield.””
Arthur pointed to the names.
“Your father wanted to make something honest.””
Damon remembered the video.
“But Richard?””
“Richard wanted power.””
Arthur’s expression became bitter.
“He believed the family name mattered more than the people carrying it.””
Emma spoke quietly.
“And Lawrence helped him.””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
Damon looked up.
“Then why did everyone think Richard was in control?””
“Because he wanted them to.””
Arthur opened another document.
“Richard was dangerous.””
“But not the person behind everything.””
Damon stared.
“Then who?””
Arthur looked directly at him.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Damon’s face changed.
“What?””
Arthur shook his head.
“Not by choice.””
“Explain.””
“Someone needed you to inherit the company.””
Damon frowned.
“I already owned it.””
“No.””
Arthur pushed the papers toward him.
“You controlled it.””
Damon read the document.
A hidden agreement.
A condition.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Emma stepped closer.
“What?””
Damon looked at her.
“My father created a trust.””
“Yes.””
“For Lily.””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Arthur answered.
“Because your father discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
Arthur’s voice lowered.
“That Lily was the only person who could legally expose the people who stole from the company.””
Damon looked confused.
“She was a child.””
“Exactly.””
Arthur pointed at the documents.
“She had no connection to the corruption. No involvement. No reason to be targeted.””
Damon looked at Lily.
The little girl stood beside Emma, holding her mother’s hand.
Someone had spent five years hunting a child.
A child who didn’t even understand why.
Damon’s anger grew.
“They wanted her gone.””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
“Because of money.””
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
Arthur looked at Emma.
“Because Lily carried proof.””
Emma reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small memory card.
“This.””
Damon stared.
“What is it?””
“The original records.””
Arthur nodded.
“Everything Lawrence tried to erase.””
Damon looked at Emma.
“You had this the entire time?””
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
“For you to be safe.””
Damon looked hurt.
“You still don’t trust me.””
Emma stepped closer.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I trust you more than anyone.””
“Then why?””
“Because I knew you would come after them.””
Silence.
“You would have fought Richard.””
“Yes.””
“You would have exposed Lawrence.””
“Yes.””
“You would have destroyed yourself trying to protect me.””
Damon had no answer.
Because she was right.
Emma touched his hand.
“I didn’t disappear because I stopped loving you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I disappeared because I loved you too much.””
The words hurt.
Because part of him understood.
But another part still carried five years of pain.
Before he could respond, Arthur spoke.
“There is one more thing.””
Everyone looked at him.
Damon sighed.
“What now?””
Arthur looked toward the photograph of Emma and Lily.
“The accident.””
Damon stiffened.
“We know it wasn’t an accident.””
“No.””
Arthur shook his head.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
Emma became tense.
Arthur continued.
“The person who caused the crash was not trying to kill Emma.””
Damon frowned.
“Then what?””
“They were trying to kill Lily.””
The room went silent.
Damon looked at his daughter.
“Why?””
Arthur’s face became heavy.
“Because before the accident, Emma discovered Lily was connected to another family secret.””
Damon’s stomach tightened.
“What secret?””
Arthur looked at Emma.
She nodded.
Then she finally said the words she had been avoiding.
“Lily was born with evidence.””
Damon stared.
“What does that mean?””
Emma took a deep breath.
“When Lily was born, there was a medical record.””
“A record of what?””
“Your father’s illness.””
Damon frowned.
“My father?””
Emma nodded.
“He knew he was dying.””
Damon looked confused.
“He died ten years ago.””
“Yes.””
“But Lily was born after?””
“Yes.””
The timeline didn’t make sense.
Emma continued.
“Before he died, your father discovered Lawrence had been planning to take control of the company.””
Arthur added:
“He created a backup plan.””
Damon looked at him.
“What backup plan?””
Arthur answered:
“Lily.””
Damon shook his head.
“She was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“So why her?””
Emma looked at Lily.
“Because your father trusted that no one would suspect a child.””
Damon understood.
The trust.
The documents.
The evidence.
Everything pointed back to Lily.
Richard wanted control.
Lawrence wanted money.
And Lily was the one thing they couldn’t erase.
Suddenly, Damon’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
Another unknown message.
He opened it.
A video.
Richard.
Alive.
Sitting in a car.
“I know you found Arthur.””
Damon stared.
Richard continued.
“You think he’s your savior.””
A bitter smile.
“He isn’t.””
Arthur’s face changed.
Richard looked into the camera.
“Ask him why he really disappeared.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
“Ask him what happened the night your father died.””
Damon looked at Arthur.
The old man went pale.
Emma whispered:
“No.””
Damon’s voice dropped.
“What is he talking about?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
And that silence was the answer.
Damon stepped back.
“My father’s death…”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Damon.””
“What happened?””
Arthur looked broken.
“Your father didn’t die naturally.””
The room went cold.
Damon stared.
“Who killed him?””
Arthur looked at Richard’s frozen image.
Then at Damon.
And whispered:
“The same person who tried to kill Emma.””
A long silence followed.
Then Arthur said the one sentence Damon never expected.
“The person you have been searching for…”
He looked toward the doorway.
“…has been standing beside you all night.””
Everyone turned.
Slowly.
Because someone in the room had gone missing.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Someone who knew every secret.
May you like
Damon’s eyes moved to the empty space beside the door.
Victoria was gone.
