Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden in Lily’s Name

Richard Whitmore stood in the doorway like he belonged there.

That was the part Damon hated most.

Not the fact that he was alive.

Not even the fact that he had been hiding for years.

It was the calmness.

The confidence.

The way he looked at the destruction around him and seemed completely untouched by it.

As if five years of grief meant nothing.

As if Emma’s pain meant nothing.

As if Damon’s entire life was just a game that Richard had been waiting to finish.

Damon stepped between him and Emma.

“You’re not coming near my family.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“Family.””

He looked around the room.

“That word has always meant more to you than it did to your father.””

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“Why?””

Richard tilted his head.

“Because you still believe he was the good man in the story?””

Emma’s expression changed.

Damon noticed.

“Emma?””

She looked at him.

“There are things you still don’t know.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Of course there are.””

He walked farther into the room.

“Your entire life has been built on things you didn’t know.””

Michael moved forward.

“Richard, stop.””

Richard looked at him.

“Still protecting Damon?””

Michael’s face hardened.

“You destroyed enough.””

Richard smiled.

“You think I destroyed something?””

His eyes moved toward Damon.

“I only exposed what was already broken.””

Damon clenched his fists.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at Emma.

“She never told you?””

Emma remained silent.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

Damon turned to her.

“What didn’t you tell me?””

Emma looked down.

“Damon…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I spent five years believing you were dead.””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“I spent five years blaming myself.””

“I know.””

“I spent five years thinking I lost my family.””

He looked at Lily.

“Then I find out I have a daughter I never knew existed.””

His eyes returned to Emma.

“So please.””

A pause.

“Don’t protect me from the truth again.””

Emma closed her eyes.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

Richard watched silently.

Emma took Lily’s hand.

“Sweetheart, go with Michael for a minute.””

Lily looked worried.

“But Mommy…”

“I’ll be okay.””

The little girl looked at Damon.

He knelt down.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at him.

“Whatever happens, I’m here.””

She nodded slowly.

Michael guided her toward the hallway.

Once they were gone, Damon faced Emma.

“Tell me.””

Emma took a deep breath.

“The reason Richard wanted me gone wasn’t only because of the company.””

“Then what?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because of Lily.””

Damon froze.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

Damon turned toward him.

“What does my daughter have to do with you?””

Richard walked toward the desk.

“Everything.””

Emma’s voice became sharp.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored her.

“Five years ago, Emma discovered the truth about Lily’s birth.””

Damon looked confused.

“What truth?””

Emma looked away.

And that was enough.

Something inside Damon sank.

“What truth?””

She whispered:

“Lily wasn’t supposed to survive.””

The room went silent.

Damon stared.

“What does that mean?””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“The night she was born…”

She stopped.

Richard finished for her.

“Lily was the reason your father changed his will.””

Damon looked at him.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“Your father had secrets.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Richard walked closer.

“Your father knew he made mistakes. He knew the company was built on things that could destroy the family name.””

Damon shook his head.

“Where does Lily fit into this?””

Emma answered softly.

“Your father discovered Richard was planning to take control of everything.””

Richard laughed.

“I was planning to take what was already mine.””

Emma ignored him.

“Your father changed the inheritance documents.””

Damon stared.

“What documents?””

“The ones that would give Lily protection.””

Damon looked at Lily’s empty doorway.

“My daughter?””

Emma nodded.

“Your father knew Richard would come after you.””

Damon’s expression changed.

“Why would he care about Lily?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because Lily wasn’t just your daughter.””

A cold feeling moved through Damon.

“What are you saying?””

Emma reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I wanted you to find this yourself.””

Damon took it.

His name was written on the front.

Again.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

He looked at the name.

Lily Whitmore.

Father:

Damon Whitmore.

Mother:

Emma Whitmore.

Everything was normal.

Until he saw the second page.

A legal document.

A statement signed by his father.

Damon read slowly.

*I acknowledge Lily Whitmore as the rightful heir to the original Whitmore family trust.*

His eyes widened.

“The trust?””

Richard’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Damon saw it.

“The family trust?””

Emma nodded.

“Your grandfather created it before your father built the company.””

Damon looked at Richard.

“You wanted this.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course.””

“So you tried to kill my wife because of money?””

Richard’s face became cold.

“Don’t simplify things.””

“You tried to erase my family.””

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“I tried to correct a mistake.””

Damon stared.

“You’re insane.””

Richard ignored the insult.

“Your father gave everything to you because he thought you were different.””

He laughed softly.

“But you were just like him.””

Damon felt anger rise.

“What does that mean?””

Richard’s eyes became darker.

“You cared about love more than power.””

Emma stepped forward.

“And that’s why you lost.””

Richard looked at her.

“You survived because of luck.””

“No.””

Emma’s voice was steady.

“I survived because people chose to help me.””

Richard looked toward Michael.

“People like him?””

Michael said nothing.

Richard smiled.

“He betrayed me.””

Damon looked at Michael.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Michael was supposed to tell me when Emma contacted him.””

Damon’s eyes widened.

“You were working with him?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Richard laughed.

“He was.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Not willingly.””

Damon looked between them.

“Explain.””

Michael’s face was filled with shame.

“Richard threatened my family.””

Silence.

“He forced me to report where Emma was.””

Damon stared.

“Then why didn’t he find her?””

Michael looked at Emma.

“Because I lied.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“I trusted you.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You trusted nobody.””

The room became tense.

Then Richard suddenly reached into his coat.

Damon reacted instantly.

But Richard didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

He placed it on the desk.

A photo of Emma.

Five years ago.

After the accident.

But there was something wrong.

Emma wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was another person.

Someone Damon recognized.

Someone impossible.

Damon picked up the photograph.

His face changed.

“No…”

Emma whispered:

“Damon.””

He looked at her.

“Who is this?””

She didn’t answer.

Because the person in the photo was the last person Damon expected.

His mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Emma the night she disappeared.

Damon stared at the picture.

“My mother was there?””

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.””

Damon looked at Emma.

“Tell me.””

Emma’s voice trembled.

“Your mother saved us.””

“From what?””

Emma looked at Richard.

“From him.””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked angry.

Damon noticed.

And that frightened him.

Because Richard Whitmore had spent years controlling everything.

But one name still had the power to make him lose control.

Damon picked up the photograph.

“Where is my mother now?””

Nobody answered.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*If you want to see your mother alive, come alone.*

Damon’s blood turned cold.

Because below the message was a picture.

His mother.

Bound to a chair.

And standing behind her was someone wearing a familiar ring.

Emma’s stolen ring.

The same ring that started everything.

The message continued.

*Bring Lily.*

Damon looked up.

Richard was gone.

And everyone suddenly realized the same terrifying truth.

This was never about the ring.

It was never about the company.

It was never even about the money.

May you like

Someone wanted Lily.

And they were willing to destroy an entire family to get her.
