Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Ring
The photograph remained on the table.
Damon couldn’t stop looking at it.
His mother.
Tied to a chair.
Terrified.
And behind her…
The ring.
Emma’s ring.
The same ring that had appeared on Victoria’s finger at the engagement dinner.
The same ring that had opened a door to five years of secrets.
His mind struggled to process everything.
His wife had survived.
His daughter had been hidden from him.
His uncle was alive.
His mother was missing.
And someone was still hunting Lily.
Damon looked around the room.
“No one leaves.””
Nobody argued.
Even Richard’s disappearance felt like a warning.
Like he wanted them to follow.
Like he had planned every step.
Michael picked up the photograph.
“There’s something wrong.””
Damon looked at him.
“What?””
Michael studied the image.
“The ring.””
Damon frowned.
“What about it?””
“It’s not on his hand.””
Damon looked closer.
Michael was right.
The person standing behind Damon’s mother wasn’t wearing the ring.
They were holding it.
Showing it.
Like a message.
Emma stepped closer.
“That’s not Richard.””
Everyone turned.
Damon stared.
“What?””
Emma shook her head.
“The person behind your mother.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“That’s not Richard.””
Damon looked again.
The shape of the body.
The height.
The clothing.
She was right.
It wasn’t clear enough to identify.
“Then who?””
Emma’s face became pale.
“I don’t know.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t Damon’s.
It was Victoria’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
Damon noticed immediately.
“Who is it?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
Slowly, she turned the phone around.
No name.
No number.
Just one word.
*Unknown.*
Damon held out his hand.
“Give it to me.””
Victoria hesitated.
Then handed it over.
Damon answered.
Silence.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
“Damon.””
His blood ran cold.
Because he knew that voice.
Not from tonight.
From years ago.
From childhood.
“Mom?””
Emma covered her mouth.
Michael looked away.
The voice trembled.
“Damon, don’t listen to Richard.””
Damon’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I don’t have much time.””
“Mom, where are you?””
A sound in the background.
A door.
Someone moving.
Then his mother whispered:
“Take Lily and leave.””
Damon looked toward the hallway.
“I’m not leaving you.””
“You have to.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I lost you once.””
A pause.
Then his mother said something that broke him.
“I’m sorry I let you lose Emma.””
Damon froze.
The room became silent.
“What?””
His mother continued.
“I should have told you the truth.””
“Mom…”
“I tried.””
Her voice shook.
“I tried to protect you.””
Damon closed his eyes.
“Where are you?””
The line suddenly changed.
A different voice.
A man.
Calm.
Cold.
“You have always been predictable, Damon.””
Damon opened his eyes.
Richard.
“You took my mother?””
Richard laughed.
“I took back what belonged to me.””
“What does that mean?””
“You still don’t understand.””
The voice became quieter.
“Your mother wasn’t protecting Emma from me.””
A pause.
“She was protecting Emma from you.””
Everyone froze.
Damon looked at Emma.
Her face changed.
Richard continued.
“Ask your wife what happened the night she disappeared.””
The call ended.
Damon stood still.
The accusation hung in the air.
Emma looked away.
And Damon felt something he never wanted to feel.
Doubt.
Not because he believed Richard.
But because everyone had hidden something from him.
Everyone.
“What happened that night?””
Emma didn’t answer.
Damon’s voice softened.
“Emma.””
She closed her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Emma looked at Lily’s empty hallway.
“Because I was afraid of what you would do.””
Damon felt hurt.
“You thought I couldn’t handle the truth?””
“I thought you would get yourself killed.””
The words silenced him.
Emma took a breath.
“The night of the accident, I wasn’t running away from Richard.””
“Then who?””
Emma looked at him.
“I was running away from a man inside your company.””
Damon frowned.
“Someone who worked for me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Emma shook her head.
“I never saw his face.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Emma.””
She looked at him.
“You have to tell him.””
Emma nodded.
“I found evidence that someone was using your company accounts to hide money.””
Damon already knew.
“But I also found something else.””
“What?””
“A payment.””
“From who?””
Emma’s voice dropped.
“From your personal account.””
Damon froze.
“My account?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
She stepped closer.
“Someone was making it look like you were involved.””
Damon stared.
“They were framing me?””
Emma nodded.
“That was the plan.””
Michael spoke quietly.
“If the evidence was discovered, Damon would lose everything.””
Emma continued.
“And I would be blamed for helping you hide it.””
Damon looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because they wanted us separated.””
“Who?””
Emma looked toward the door.
“The person who benefited most if your family fell apart.””
Damon followed her eyes.
“Richard?””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“Then who?””
Emma reached into her bag.
She pulled out another envelope.
This one was smaller.
Older.
“I found this after I escaped.””
Damon took it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A man.
Standing beside Richard.
Damon recognized him immediately.
His heart dropped.
Because the man wasn’t a stranger.
It was the person who had handled every legal document for Whitmore Technologies.
The person who managed his father’s estate.
The person Damon trusted to protect his family’s money.
“Lawrence.””
Michael stared.
“Your father’s lawyer.””
Emma nodded.
“He wasn’t just the lawyer.””
Damon looked at her.
“What was he?””
Emma whispered:
“He was the person controlling Richard.””
The room went silent.
For the first time, Richard didn’t seem like the mastermind.
He seemed like another piece on the board.
Damon looked at the photograph.
“Where is Lawrence now?””
Emma hesitated.
“Dead.””
Michael frowned.
“What?””
“He died two years ago.””
Damon stared.
Then he remembered.
The news.
The funeral.
Another death.
Another closed door.
But now he understood.
Too many people around him had died.
Too many people had disappeared.
Too many secrets had survived.
Suddenly, Lily screamed.
Everyone turned.
She was standing at the top of the stairs.
Holding something.
“Mommy!””
Emma rushed toward her.
“What happened?””
Lily pointed toward the upstairs hallway.
“There was someone in your room.””
Damon’s blood ran cold.
“What?””
Lily held out a small object.
A necklace.
Not Emma’s.
Not his.
A necklace with a small silver pendant.
Michael looked at it.
Then his face changed.
“No…”
Damon looked at him.
“What?””
Michael stepped back.
“That belonged to Lawrence.””
The house went silent.
Damon stared at the necklace.
“Lawrence is dead.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then why is his necklace here?””
Nobody answered.
Then Damon noticed something engraved on the pendant.
A single letter.
Not L.
Not W.
A letter that made Emma’s face lose all color.
Because she knew exactly what it meant.
Damon looked at her.
“What is it?””
Emma whispered:
“R.””
A chill moved through the room.
Damon looked toward the dark hallway.
Because suddenly the truth became clear.
Richard wasn’t the only person hiding.
Lawrence wasn’t the only person pulling strings.
And the person who had been watching them all night…
was someone who had been inside the Whitmore family long before Emma disappeared.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Everyone looked up.
Then a voice called from the shadows.
A voice Damon recognized.
“Damon…”
His heart stopped.
Because this time…
it wasn’t a recording.
It wasn’t a memory.
It was someone standing in the house.
May you like
Someone who should have been dead.
Someone who had been watching them from the beginning.
