Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
“Damon…”
The voice came from the darkness.
Soft.
Familiar.
Impossible.
His entire body stopped responding.
For five years, he had replayed Emma’s voice in his memories because it was the only place he could find her.
Now that voice was real.
Standing somewhere inside the house.
“Emma?””
The name escaped his lips before he could stop it.
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Damon, wait.””
But Damon was already moving.
The hallway was dark.
The only light came from the faint glow of his phone screen.
Behind him, Lily held tightly onto the edge of his coat.
“Daddy…”
He turned immediately.
“I’m here.””
The fear in her eyes reminded him of something important.
This was not just about him.
Not anymore.
He picked her up and held her close.
Then he looked back toward the hallway.
“Who is there?””
For several seconds, there was no answer.
Then a shadow appeared.
A woman stepped slowly into the light.
Older.
Tired.
Her hair shorter.
Her face thinner.
But Damon knew her.
He knew every line of her face.
Every movement.
Every expression.
The woman he had cried over for five years.
The woman he had buried in his heart.
Emma.
Damon forgot how to breathe.
“Emma…”
She stopped.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Damon.””
The sound of his name from her mouth destroyed the last piece of doubt inside him.
He crossed the room in seconds.
But before he could reach her, Emma looked at Lily.
And the entire world changed.
“Lily.””
The little girl immediately reached for her.
“Mommy!””
Emma ran forward.
She held her daughter tightly, crying into her hair.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily hugged her neck.
“You came back.””
Emma closed her eyes.
“I promised I would.””
Damon stood frozen.
Watching.
A thousand emotions fought inside him.
Relief.
Anger.
Love.
Pain.
Questions.
So many questions.
Michael quietly stepped away.
Giving them space.
But Damon couldn’t move.
He had dreamed of this moment.
He had imagined finding Emma alive.
He imagined running to her.
Holding her.
Never letting go.
But he never imagined standing there with five years of unanswered pain between them.
Emma looked at him.
And she understood.
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know you’re angry.””
Damon laughed softly.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was hurt.
“Angry?””
Emma lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
“You know?””
His voice rose.
“Do you know what I went through?””
Emma closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“No, you don’t.””
His words shook.
“You don’t know what it was like to wake up every morning thinking my wife was dead.””
Tears rolled down Emma’s face.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I watched.””
The answer silenced him.
Damon stared.
“What?””
Emma looked away.
“I watched you from a distance.””
His heart sank.
“You watched me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She struggled to speak.
“Because I couldn’t come back.””
Damon shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“The truth is you were alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe you were dead.””
Emma looked at him.
“I didn’t want to.””
“But you did.””
The silence between them was painful.
Lily looked between them.
“Daddy is sad.””
Emma wiped her tears.
“I know, sweetheart.””
Damon looked at the child.
Then back at Emma.
“You had a daughter.””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
Her expression broke.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emma looked at Michael.
Damon followed her eyes.
And suddenly, he understood.
Michael wasn’t just keeping a secret.
He was protecting one.
“What happened?””
Emma took a deep breath.
“The night of the accident wasn’t an accident.””
Damon already knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
“I found evidence someone was stealing from your company.””
“The money?””
Emma nodded.
“But that wasn’t the biggest secret.””
“What was?””
She looked at him.
“Your father.””
Damon’s expression hardened.
“My father died.””
“I know.””
“Then why does everyone keep saying his name?””
Emma hesitated.
“Because his death was not the end of his influence.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Emma.””
She looked at him.
“We need to tell him everything.””
Emma nodded.
“I know.””
Damon crossed his arms.
“Finally.””
Emma looked down.
“The company your father built was not only his.””
Damon remembered the documents.
“What does that mean?””
“There was another owner.””
“Who?””
Emma looked toward the box.
“You found the papers.””
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know?””
“Because I hid them.””
He looked at her.
“Who was the other owner?””
Emma hesitated.
Then said:
“Your uncle.””
Damon frowned.
“My uncle?””
“You were told he died when you were young.””
“Yes.””
“He didn’t.””
The room went silent.
Damon felt a cold wave move through him.
“What?””
Emma continued.
“Your uncle, Richard Whitmore, disappeared after a fight with your father.””
Damon shook his head.
“I don’t remember.””
“You were ten.””
“So?””
“So your father made sure you forgot.””
Michael spoke quietly.
“He removed every record.””
Damon looked at him.
“You knew this too?””
Michael nodded.
“I knew pieces.””
Damon looked away.
Everyone had pieces of his life.
Everyone except him.
Emma stepped closer.
“Richard discovered what your father was doing.””
“What was he doing?””
Emma looked at the flash drive.
“Watch the video.””
Damon connected the flash drive to the laptop in the old office.
Everyone gathered around.
The screen flickered.
Then a video appeared.
A man sat in a dark room.
Damon recognized him immediately.
His father.
The man who had died ten years earlier.
The man whose portrait hung in the company headquarters.
Damon stared.
“Impossible.””
His father looked older.
Tired.
Afraid.
Then he spoke.
“If you are watching this, then I failed to fix what I started.””
Damon’s heart raced.
The recording continued.
“I made mistakes.””
His father looked directly into the camera.
“Terrible mistakes.””
A document appeared on screen.
A company agreement.
Then another.
And another.
Emma watched Damon carefully.
The video continued.
“I built Whitmore Technologies with someone who believed power mattered more than family.””
Damon leaned closer.
The next words changed everything.
“Richard wanted control.””
A pause.
“And when I refused to give it to him, he threatened everyone I loved.””
Damon looked at Emma.
She nodded.
“He came after you.””
The video continued.
“I thought sending Richard away solved the problem.””
His father’s face became filled with regret.
“I was wrong.””
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
A date.
The date of Emma’s accident.
Damon stared.
Because beneath the date was a name.
A name he recognized.
The person who arranged the car.
The person who signed the repair documents.
The person who had access to everything.
Damon whispered:
“No…”
Emma touched his arm.
“Damon.””
He looked at her.
“Who did this?””
Emma’s eyes filled with fear.
“He’s been closer than you think.””
The office door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A calm smile.
Damon’s blood froze.
Because he had seen that face before.
Not in memories.
Not in photographs.
In the mansion.
At the engagement dinner.
The man who had raised his glass and congratulated him.
The man who had disappeared before they arrived.
Richard Whitmore.
Damon’s uncle.
Alive.
Richard smiled.
“Hello, nephew.””
Nobody moved.
Lily hid behind Emma.
Damon stared.
“You’re dead.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Everyone thought so.””
He stepped into the room.
“But that was the first lie your family ever told you.””
Damon’s fists tightened.
“Why are you here?””
Richard looked at the flash drive.
Then at Emma.
Then at Lily.
“I came to finish what I started.””
The room went silent.
Damon stepped forward.
“What did you do to my wife?””
Richard smiled.
“I didn’t do anything to Emma.””
A pause.
Then his expression changed.
“I only gave her a reason to disappear.””
Emma’s face turned pale.
Because she knew something Damon didn’t.
Richard looked directly at Lily.
“And now that the little girl has found her father…”
May you like
He smiled.
“The last secret can finally be revealed.””
