Chapter 8: The Secret Behind My Mother's Death

I couldn't take my eyes off the photograph.

My mother had died on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

The official report said her car had lost control on a wet road. There had been no witnesses willing to testify that another vehicle was involved.

I had been twenty-nine.

Emily had been twenty-one.

We had spent months grieving, accepting the explanation because we had no reason to question it.

Now Thomas Bell was telling us that our mother had feared someone was trying to kill her.

"Why was Marcus at the accident scene?"" I asked.

Thomas folded his hands.

"He claimed he had been driving behind her.""

"That's impossible. He never mentioned it.""

"He told the police he stopped to help.""

Emily stared at the photograph.

"Did he?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No. By the time he arrived, the emergency services were already there.""

I felt something break inside me.

"Then why did he come?""

"To find out whether she had survived.""

Emily stood abruptly.

"I can't listen to this.""

She walked toward the window.

I understood.

We had spent years remembering our mother as a woman who loved gardening, baked terrible birthday cakes, and sang loudly in the kitchen.

Now every memory had become tangled with a secret we had never been allowed to know.

I turned back to Thomas.

"Do you have evidence?""

He nodded.

"Your mother kept a small recorder in her car. She believed someone was following her.""

He opened a locked drawer and removed a cassette tape.

"She gave this to me three days before the accident.""

I stared at it.

"What's on it?""

"Her final conversation with Marcus Reed.""

Victor leaned forward.

"Why haven't you given this to the police?""

"Because the recording was incomplete. It contained accusations, but no direct admission of wrongdoing.""

"Then we need to hear it.""

Thomas placed the tape into an old cassette player.

A click.

Static.

Then my mother's voice.

"Marcus, I know about the accounts.""

A man's voice answered.

"You don't know anything.""

"I know about Sophie. I know about the false claims. And I know you've been using the clinic to move money.""

"Lower your voice.""

"I'm not afraid of you.""

"You should be.""

There was a pause.

Then my mother's voice became quieter.

"Thomas has the original documents. Daniel will receive them when he's old enough.""

Marcus laughed.

"Daniel doesn't know anything.""

"That's the point. You leave my children alone.""

The recording crackled.

Marcus spoke again.

"You're making a mistake, Margaret.""

"No. I made a mistake when I trusted you.""

A chair scraped.

Then Marcus said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Your husband made the same mistake.""

The tape ended.

Emily pressed both hands against her mouth.

I sat completely still.

Victor looked at Thomas.

"That's enough to reopen the investigation.""

Thomas nodded.

"Perhaps. But there's something else.""

He opened a separate folder.

Inside were several photographs of a dark sedan.

The same vehicle appeared in three different pictures, parked near our mother's house.

Thomas pointed to the registration number.

"It belonged to a company owned by the Reed family.""

I felt my hands shaking.

"Can we identify the driver?""

Thomas nodded.

"His name was Brian Cole.""

The same man we had seen at the bus terminal.

Emily turned.

"The man who tried to steal the briefcase?""

"Yes.""

Victor picked up the photographs.

"He's been working for Marcus for years.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Why did you wait until now to tell us?""

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"Because I received a phone call yesterday.""

"From whom?""

"Marcus.""

"What did he say?""

Thomas's face tightened.

"He told me to stop protecting the Hayes family.""

I stood.

"Did he threaten you?""

Thomas nodded.

"He told me that old men sometimes fall down stairs.""

Emily began crying.

Victor closed the folder.

"We need to get you somewhere safe.""

Thomas shook his head.

"I'm not leaving.""

"Thomas—"

"I have spent twenty years watching that man destroy everything your father built. I'm not running now.""

I placed my hand on his shoulder.

"Then we'll make sure you don't have to.""

Two hours later, we met with a federal investigator named Agent Rebecca Collins.

She worked in a financial crimes unit and had been brought in after the police discovered that several foundation payments crossed state lines.

She reviewed the documents, watched Noah's video, and listened to the cassette recording.

When she finished, she closed her laptop.

"Mr. Hayes, this is considerably larger than an assault investigation.""

"I understand.""

"We're looking at possible financial fraud, falsified corporate records, witness intimidation, and potentially a criminal conspiracy.""

Victor placed the USB drive on the table.

"We have more.""

Agent Collins examined the files.

"Where did these come from?""

"Rachel Cole.""

"Where is she?""

"We don't know.""

Collins looked at me.

"Then finding her becomes our first priority.""

I showed her the messages.

She studied them.

"Have you received any threats directly?""

I showed her the photograph of Emily outside the clinic.

Then the messages.

Then the image of Rachel's son at school.

Collins's expression hardened.

"These need to be added to the case immediately.""

Emily leaned forward.

"Can you protect Noah?""

"We can arrange protection for both Rachel and her son once we locate them.""

"What about the clinic?""

Collins looked at the deed.

"First, we need to prevent the property transfer.""

Victor nodded.

"Thomas Bell can authenticate the original trust.""

"Good. We'll arrange for a forensic examination of the signatures.""

I took out the memory card.

"And this contains an audio recording of Marcus.""

Collins examined the small card.

"Do you know what's on it?""

"Rachel said it includes conversations between Marcus and Kayla.""

Collins placed it inside an evidence envelope.

"We'll examine it.""

I looked at her.

"Can you stop him?""

She met my eyes.

"If the evidence supports what you've told me, yes.""

For the first time, I allowed myself to breathe.

Then her phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed.

"Where?""

Another pause.

"Don't approach them without backup.""

She ended the call.

"What happened?"" Victor asked.

"Rachel Cole has been located.""

I stood immediately.

"Where?""

"At a private medical facility outside the city.""

Emily looked confused.

"Why would she be there?""

Collins checked her notes.

"She was admitted under an assumed name after suffering injuries.""

My stomach dropped.

"Is Noah with her?""

"Yes. He's unharmed.""

"Can we see them?""

"Not yet. We need to secure the location.""

She turned toward her colleagues.

"Prepare two units. And contact the local authorities.""

Then she looked at me.

"Mr. Hayes, I need you to understand something. If Marcus Reed learns that we have the original records, he may become desperate.""

I nodded.

"He already is.""

Agent Collins studied me.

"Then don't make yourself an easy target.""

Rachel was finally released from the medical facility that evening.

She had a bruised shoulder and a cut above her eyebrow. Noah sat beside her, holding a paper cup of apple juice.

When he saw us, he jumped up.

"Mr. Daniel!""

I hugged him carefully.

"You're okay.""

He nodded.

"Mom said the police caught the bad men.""

"They're working on it.""

Rachel looked exhausted.

"I'm sorry.""

I pulled up a chair.

"For what?""

"For the statement. They had copies of my signature, and they made it look like I had signed everything willingly.""

"Agent Collins knows.""

Rachel's eyes filled.

"I was terrified. They told me they'd take Noah away.""

Emily took her hand.

"You're safe now.""

Rachel shook her head.

"Not until Marcus is stopped.""

I nodded.

"Did you manage to keep the original records?""

Rachel looked toward Noah.

He pulled a small envelope from his backpack.

"Mom said I should give this to Mr. Daniel.""

Inside was a second memory card.

Rachel smiled weakly.

"The one I gave you at the bus station was a decoy.""

Victor raised his eyebrows.

"You're telling me the real card was with Noah the entire time?""

She nodded.

"They searched my apartment. They searched my bag. But nobody thought to look inside his school supplies.""

I examined the card.

"What's on this one?""

"Everything the other one had.""

"And the recording?""

Rachel looked at Agent Collins.

"It's the most important part.""

She took a breath.

"Marcus and Kayla were discussing the plan to frame you. They didn't know I had activated the recorder on my phone.""

Agent Collins immediately held out her hand.

"May I?""

Rachel gave her the card.

Collins inserted it into a secure device.

A list of files appeared.

One was labeled:

*GALA — OCTOBER 14.*

She opened it.

The recording began with the sound of a door closing.

Then Kayla spoke.

"He's definitely coming?""

Marcus answered.

"His sister accepted the invitation.""

"What if he doesn't react?""

"He will. I know his type.""

Kayla laughed.

"And if he doesn't touch me?""

Marcus's voice became colder.

"Then you make sure he looks like he did.""

There was a pause.

Then Kayla asked:

"What about the clinic?""

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Once he's arrested, we'll have enough leverage to move the property.""

"What if he fights?""

"He won't have the money to fight us.""

Kayla laughed again.

"You're sure?""

"I'm sure.""

The recording continued.

Then came the sentence that made Agent Collins stop the audio.

Marcus's voice was unmistakable.

"His father was a stubborn fool. I should have finished this business before he died.""

Nobody spoke.

Collins replayed the sentence.

Then she looked at Victor.

"Did you hear that?""

Victor nodded.

"Yes.""

"He's referring to Thomas Hayes?""

"Yes.""

Agent Collins closed the recording.

"This changes everything.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"Can you arrest him?""

"We need to verify the recording and obtain additional evidence.""

I felt anger rising.

"How much more evidence do you need? You have the video, the forged documents, the financial records, and his own voice.""

Collins remained calm.

"We need to make sure the case survives in court. If we move too early, his attorneys will attack every piece of evidence.""

I looked at Emily.

She was holding Noah's hand.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Daniel, it's Kayla.""

My entire body went still.

"What do you want?""

She laughed softly.

"To apologize.""

I looked at Agent Collins.

She immediately gestured for me to keep talking.

"You're calling to apologize?""

"I've been thinking about what happened at the gala.""

"You mean when you framed me?""

Her breathing changed.

"Listen carefully. My father doesn't know I'm calling.""

"Why should I believe you?""

"Because I'm about to tell you something that could save your sister.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Kayla lowered her voice.

"Your father didn't die because he was sick, Daniel.""

The room went silent.

I gripped the phone.

May you like

"What are you saying?""

"He was poisoned.""
