Chapter 3: The Name on the Contract

The emergency room smelled of disinfectant and burnt coffee.

A nurse placed an ice pack against my jaw while a doctor examined the swelling. The X-ray showed a fracture, but nothing that required surgery.

"Soft foods," the doctor told me.

"No heavy activity. And avoid taking another punch to the face.""

"That last one should be easy.""

Emily didn't laugh.

She sat beside the bed with her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

Claire had gone to speak with the police. Rachel and Noah were still giving statements at the hotel.

I showed Emily the two messages again.

"Have you received anything like this before?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Anyone following you?""

"I don't know.""

"Has Dr. Palmer been acting strangely?""

She stared at the floor.

"He's been asking me to sign additional reports. Every time I ask about missing supplies, he tells me not to worry.""

"Did he mention the foundation?""

"Only that Mr. Reed was frustrated with our complaints.""

I placed my phone beside me.

"Emily, I need you to tell me everything.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Three months ago, our clinic stopped receiving equipment from a supplier called MedCore Distribution. We were told the contract had expired.""

"Did you order from someone else?""

"No. The director said the foundation had already paid for the replacement supplier.""

"What supplier?""

"Brightwell Medical.""

I looked at her.

"Did the supplies arrive?""

"Some did. Not enough.""

"How much was paid?""

Emily opened her email and searched.

"I have an invoice somewhere.""

She found it and turned the screen toward me.

The document listed a payment of $480,000 for pediatric medical supplies.

It had been approved by the Reed Foundation.

The supplier's address was a suite number in an office building downtown.

I read the line twice.

"Have you ever visited this address?""

"No.""

"Did you call them?""

"Once. The number was disconnected.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you report it?""

"I did. I told Dr. Palmer.""

"And?""

"He said the foundation had already resolved it.""

I closed my eyes for a moment.

"Emily, that's not a resolution.""

"I know.""

Her voice cracked.

"I know that now.""

The doctor returned with my discharge papers.

Emily stood.

"Can he go home?""

"Yes, but someone should stay with him tonight.""

"I will.""

Once we were outside, I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel, are you out of the hospital?""

"Yes. We need to talk.""

"About the messages?""

I stopped walking.

"How did you know?""

"Because Rachel received one, too.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did it say?""

"Someone sent her a photograph of Noah getting into his school bus this morning.""

I looked at Emily.

"Is he safe?""

"He's with Rachel. The police are aware.""

"Where are you?""

"At the hotel. They're still reviewing the recording.""

"Has Marcus seen it?""

"He saw enough.""

"Meaning?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"His attorneys arrived twenty minutes ago. They're arguing that the video was edited.""

"Was it?""

"No. Noah's original is intact.""

"Then what are they claiming?""

"That the footage doesn't show what happened immediately before the collision. They're suggesting you approached Kayla first.""

I almost laughed.

"I was standing beside a window.""

"I know. There are other cameras in the ballroom.""

"Then get the footage.""

"That's the problem.""

She paused.

"The hotel says the cameras were not recording in that section.""

I stared at the street.

"Convenient.""

"Very.""

Emily moved closer.

"What's happening?""

I summarized the call.

She shook her head.

"They can just erase everything?""

"Not if other people recorded it.""

Claire spoke again.

"There's one more thing. Noah's video captured audio from before the collision.""

"What did it capture?""

"A conversation between Kayla and a man near the entrance.""

"Who?""

"I don't know yet. The camera wasn't close enough to identify his face.""

"Can you send me the recording?""

"I've already sent it to the police. I'll send you a copy.""

I ended the call.

A few seconds later, a video appeared.

I pressed play.

The camera shook as Noah adjusted his phone. In the background, the orchestra was warming up. Guests moved through the entrance.

Kayla stood near a tall floral arrangement, speaking to a man in a gray suit.

The man's face was turned away.

I raised the volume.

Kayla's voice came through first.

"Are you sure he came?""

The man nodded.

"His name is on the list.""

"Good.""

"He'll be near the window.""

Kayla glanced toward the ballroom.

"And the rest?""

"Everything is arranged.""

She adjusted her bracelet.

"Make sure Dad doesn't hear about it until it's done.""

The man leaned closer.

"What about the boy?""

Kayla's expression changed.

"Which boy?""

"The one with the phone.""

She looked toward the entrance.

"He's just a kid. What could he possibly do?""

The recording ended.

Emily's face had gone white.

"She knew you were coming.""

I watched the screen again.

His name is on the list.

He'll be near the window.

Everything is arranged.

I looked at the invitation in my jacket pocket.

The clinic director had invited Emily as a guest. I had been added as her plus-one.

Someone had known exactly where I would stand.

"Who sent the invitation?"" I asked.

Emily hesitated.

"Dr. Palmer.""

I looked at her.

"Not the foundation?""

"He said it was a personal thank-you for my work.""

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Daniel Hayes?""

"Yes.""

"This is Detective Miller. I'm investigating the incident at the Grand Sterling.""

"What do you need?""

"We'd like you to come down to the station tomorrow morning.""

"Why?""

"We've received a complaint from Mr. Reed's legal team. They're alleging you threatened Miss Reed before the assault.""

"That's ridiculous.""

"They've also provided a witness statement from someone who claims you approached her aggressively.""

"Who?""

The detective paused.

"Dr. Steven Palmer.""

Emily grabbed my arm.

I stared at her.

"You're telling me the clinic director witnessed something he wasn't there to see?""

"He says he was standing near the bar.""

"That's a lie.""

"We'll verify it.""

"Detective, I have video showing Kayla deliberately staging the entire incident.""

"We have the video, Mr. Hayes. But we also have multiple statements, and we'll need to sort them out.""

"Then speak to the guests who watched it happen.""

"We are.""

The call ended.

Emily looked as though she might be sick.

"Dr. Palmer invited us there.""

"Yes.""

"He knew I was going.""

"Yes.""

"And now he's saying you threatened her?""

I didn't answer.

She sat down on the nearest bench.

"How could he do this?""

I looked at the message on my phone.

*Tell your sister to stop asking questions.*

Then I looked at the video again.

Kayla hadn't picked me randomly.

Someone had selected me.

Someone had prepared the room.

Someone had made sure Marcus would see his daughter on the floor and believe the worst before hearing a single word from me.

But why?

What exactly did they want from me?

My phone rang again.

This time the caller ID showed a name.

*Unknown Private Number.*

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Mr. Hayes, I think we need to talk.""

"Who is this?""

"You don't know me, but I know what happened tonight.""

"Then you should speak to the police.""

A quiet chuckle.

"The police are already being given a very different version of events.""

"Who are you?""

"My name is Victor Lane. I used to handle the Reed Foundation's legal contracts.""

I glanced at Emily.

"Used to?""

"Until I refused to sign a document.""

"What document?""

He paused.

"The contract that transferred the children's clinic property to a company owned by Marcus Reed.""

I stood straighter.

"What are you talking about?""

"Your sister's clinic is not just losing money, Mr. Hayes. It's about to lose its building.""

Emily covered her mouth.

Victor continued.

"The foundation plans to announce the sale next week. The clinic will be closed, and the land will be redeveloped.""

"Why are you telling me this?""

"Because I saw the invitation list for the gala.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Who put my name on it?""

Another pause.

Then Victor gave me an answer I wasn't prepared for.

"Your father.""

The street seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"My father is dead.""

"I know.""

"Then explain yourself.""

Victor's voice dropped.

"Your father signed the original property agreement twenty years ago. And according to the documents I found, the Reed Foundation has been trying to locate the other person named in that agreement for months.""

I looked at Emily.

She was staring at me now.

"Who?"" I asked.

Victor exhaled.

"You, Daniel.""

May you like

Then he said the words that made the blood drain from my face.

"Your father didn't just leave you his old house. He left you ownership of the land beneath the children's clinic.""
