Chapter 1: The Second Punch

My shoulder hit first, followed by my cheek.

The impact knocked the air out of my lungs. For a second, the chandelier above me fractured into a dozen golden circles, and the ballroom became a blur of shoes, glittering dresses, and horrified faces.

I tasted blood.

Someone shouted for security.

Marcus Reed stood over me, breathing hard, his right hand still clenched.

"That's what happens when you put your hands on my daughter," he said.

I tried to push myself up.

"My hands never—"

"Don't speak!""

He kicked my glass of spilled water away from his shoes.

Emily dropped beside me.

"Daniel! Oh my God. Look at me.""

"I'm fine," I managed.

Blood ran from the corner of my mouth.

Emily pressed a napkin against my jaw. Her hands were shaking so badly that the white fabric slipped between her fingers.

"You're not fine. You're bleeding.""

Across the room, Kayla was still on the floor.

She had both hands wrapped around her father's arm, her silver dress twisted around her knees. Her face looked devastated.

But her eyes weren't looking at Marcus.

They were looking at me.

And that little smile was still there.

"Get him out of here," Kayla whispered.

Marcus turned toward the security guards.

"You heard her. Remove him.""

Two men in black suits approached.

One reached for my arm.

"Sir, you need to come with us.""

"Don't touch him," Emily said sharply.

"Ma'am, please step aside.""

"He was attacked!""

Marcus laughed without humor.

"Your brother attacked my daughter in front of three hundred witnesses. You might want to consider how lucky he is that I'm not pressing charges right now.""

I wiped the blood from my lip.

"You're going to press charges?""

"Believe me, Daniel. I can make this very unpleasant for you.""

"Then you should make sure your daughter tells the same story twice.""

Kayla let out another sob.

"Daddy, I don't want him near me!""

Marcus stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

A woman's voice cut through the crowd.

"Actually, I think we should all stop talking until the police arrive.""

A woman in a dark green dress stood near the edge of the gathering. She held her phone in one hand.

"I'm a lawyer," she announced.

"And I watched what happened.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Then you should understand that this is a private matter.""

"No," she replied.

"A man was punched in the face. That's not a private matter.""

Several guests nodded.

The security guards exchanged glances.

For the first time, Marcus seemed aware that the room wasn't entirely on his side.

Then Kayla made another noise.

A sharp, frightened gasp.

She pointed toward the ballroom entrance.

"He's coming back!""

Everyone turned.

A small boy was running toward us.

He couldn't have been older than nine. He wore a white shirt, black trousers, and a crooked bow tie. One sleeve was rolled up, and his dark hair stuck to his forehead.

A man in a hotel uniform chased after him.

"Noah! Stop!""

The boy ignored him.

He ran straight past the security guards and dropped beside me.

"Mr. Daniel!""

I stared at him.

I didn't know his name.

"Hey, buddy. Are you okay?""

He nodded quickly, holding a phone against his chest.

"I saw it.""

The ballroom went quiet.

Marcus looked down at him.

"Who are you?""

The boy swallowed.

"My name is Noah.""

"Where are your parents?""

"My mom works here.""

Marcus glanced toward the uniformed man who had caught up.

"Get this child out of here.""

But Noah pulled the phone away from his chest.

"I have it!""

Marcus frowned.

"Have what?""

"The video.""

Kayla's face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

"What video?"" Marcus asked.

Noah lifted the phone higher.

"The part where Miss Kayla hit herself.""

The silence that followed was so complete I could hear the ice shifting inside a champagne bucket.

Kayla scrambled to her feet.

"That's impossible.""

Noah looked at her.

"I saw you.""

"You little liar!""

The hotel employee reached for his shoulder.

"Noah, come with me. Now.""

"No!"" Noah shouted, twisting away.

"I recorded it!""

Marcus stepped toward him.

"Give me the phone, son.""

Noah backed up.

"My mom said not to give my phone to strangers.""

A few guests exchanged startled looks.

Marcus forced a smile.

"I'm not a stranger. I'm Mr. Reed. I own the foundation that supports this hotel.""

Noah shook his head.

"My mom said rich people can still lie.""

A gasp traveled through the room.

Emily almost laughed, despite the blood on my face.

Marcus's smile vanished.

"Security!""

Two guards moved toward the boy.

I forced myself onto one elbow.

"Don't.""

The nearest guard stopped.

"Sir, stay down.""

"He's a child. Nobody takes his phone.""

Marcus pointed at me.

"You're in no position to give orders.""

"No. But I'm in a position to tell the police that you're trying to confiscate evidence.""

The woman in green stepped forward.

"He's right. Nobody should touch that phone until the police arrive.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"You have no idea what you're getting involved in.""

"Funny," she said.

"I was about to say the same thing to you.""

Noah's phone began vibrating.

He glanced at the screen.

Then his eyes widened.

"My mom.""

The hotel employee finally reached him.

"Noah, please. Your mother is waiting by the service entrance.""

Noah looked from the employee to me.

"Can I show him first?""

I nodded.

"Of course.""

He crouched beside my shoulder and pressed the screen.

A video appeared.

The angle was from near the ballroom entrance, slightly tilted downward. I could see the backs of several guests, the dance floor, and the tall windows.

Then Kayla entered the frame.

She walked directly toward me.

There was no confusion. No accidental stumble.

She checked over her shoulder.

Then she deliberately turned her shoulder and slammed into mine.

The glass tipped.

Water splashed across my jacket.

She stepped back.

The slap came next.

Clear as daylight.

Kayla's own palm struck her cheek.

A moment later, she tore the side of her pants, dropped to the floor, and screamed.

Noah paused the video.

"See?""

Nobody answered.

He tapped the screen again.

The clip continued.

Kayla's mouth moved before she began crying.

The audio was faint, but the words were unmistakable.

"Now let's see you get out of this.""

The woman in green covered her mouth.

Emily stared at the screen.

I felt the pain in my jaw fade beneath something colder.

Kayla had planned this.

She had known exactly what she was doing.

Marcus reached toward Noah's phone.

"That's enough.""

Noah pulled it away.

"You can't take it!""

A security guard moved in, but the woman in green stepped directly in front of him.

"Touch that child, and I'll make sure every camera in this room records it.""

Marcus looked around.

Hundreds of faces stared back at him.

Some guests had their phones raised now. Others were whispering. A few were already filming.

He slowly lowered his hand.

"Daniel," he said, his voice suddenly controlled.

"Let's discuss this somewhere private.""

I pushed myself up, wincing as Emily helped me.

"Why? So you can hit me without an audience?""

His eyes narrowed.

"Be careful.""

"That's what you said before you punched me.""

He turned to the guests.

"My daughter has been through a traumatic experience. I won't allow a misleading video to turn this into a public spectacle.""

Noah shook his head.

"It's not misleading.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Son, you don't understand what you're looking at.""

"I understand you hit Mr. Daniel.""

"I didn't hit him," Marcus snapped.

Noah pointed at the phone.

"Then why is that on video?""

A ripple of nervous laughter moved through the crowd.

Marcus's face darkened.

The police arrived less than two minutes later.

Two officers crossed the ballroom, followed by a third carrying a small notebook. The woman in green approached them immediately.

"I'm an eyewitness," she said.

"The man on the floor was assaulted. There's video evidence.""

Marcus extended his hand.

"Officer, I'm Marcus Reed. This is my daughter's private event.""

The taller officer didn't shake his hand.

"Mr. Reed, we'll need everyone's account of what happened.""

"Of course.""

"Starting with yours.""

Marcus smiled tightly.

"Certainly.""

Kayla moved closer to him.

"Officer, he grabbed me. I was terrified.""

The officer looked at her torn clothes.

"Do you need medical assistance?""

Kayla nodded quickly.

"Yes. I think so.""

I stared at her.

Then Noah stepped forward.

"She did that herself.""

The officer crouched to his level.

"What's your name?""

"Noah.""

"Did you record what happened?""

"Yes.""

"Can I see it?""

Noah hesitated.

He looked at his mother, who had finally reached the ballroom.

She was still wearing a hotel uniform, her face pale.

"Mom?""

His mother knelt and put both hands on his shoulders.

"Are you all right?""

He nodded and held out the phone.

"I got it.""

She looked at the screen, then at me.

Her expression changed.

"Oh, my God.""

The officer accepted the phone carefully.

"Can you send me the original recording?""

Noah nodded.

"Yes. But don't delete it.""

"We won't.""

As the officer reviewed the footage, Marcus leaned toward Kayla.

He whispered something I couldn't hear.

She stared at him.

Then she looked directly at Noah.

Her expression was no longer frightened.

It was furious.

And when she leaned toward her father, I saw her lips form three words.

"Get rid of him.""

Noah heard nothing.

But I did.

And so did the woman standing beside me.

She took my arm.

"Mr. Hayes," she said quietly, "I think you need to know who that little boy is before this gets any worse.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

May you like

She glanced toward Marcus.

"Because his mother used to work for the Reed Foundation.""
