Chapter 8: The Recording Daniel Left Behind
Emily couldn't see anything.
The warehouse had plunged into darkness so complete that even the outline of Hammer's enormous frame disappeared. Somewhere nearby, metal scraped against concrete. Noah cried out. A door slammed hard enough to shake dust from the rafters.
Then Detective Price shouted.
"Nobody move!""
A flashlight clicked on.
Its beam swept across the warehouse, catching overturned pallets, a fallen chair, and Thomas standing beside the table with both hands raised.
Victor Bennett was gone.
So was Michael.
For one terrible second, Emily thought Noah had vanished too.
Then she heard him.
"Mom!""
She ran toward his voice and dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around him.
"Oh, sweetheart. Oh, my God.""
Noah clung to her neck.
"I tried to hold Michael's hand.""
"You did everything right.""
"He said his mom wanted him to go with Daddy.""
Emily closed her eyes.
Behind them, Hammer was speaking to Detective Price.
"Lock down the exits. He can't have gone far.""
Price spoke into her radio.
"Suspect Victor Bennett has fled on foot or through a secondary exit. Two children may be involved. Search the perimeter immediately.""
Thomas stood motionless beneath the flashlight.
Hammer turned toward him.
"Where would he take Michael?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Hammer grabbed the edge of the table.
"Think.""
"I'm trying!""
Thomas's voice broke.
"Victor had dozens of properties. Storage units, garages, empty offices. He could be anywhere.""
Emily stood, keeping one arm around Noah.
"Then why did he take Michael and leave mine?""
Thomas looked at her.
"Because Noah was never the target.""
She stared at him.
"What?""
"Victor needed Michael. Noah was leverage. He wanted you to stop asking questions, and he wanted me to stop talking.""
Hammer's jaw tightened.
"He could've killed both boys.""
"But he didn't," Thomas replied.
"Because he still needs something from Michael.""
Detective Price returned from the entrance.
"We've got units covering the roads. The boys' descriptions are being broadcast. We also found this near the rear loading door.""
She held up a small plastic key card.
Thomas went pale.
"That's from Victor's private storage facility.""
Hammer took it.
"Where?""
"Old Quarry Road. There's a building there he hasn't used in years.""
Price looked at Thomas sharply.
"How do you know that?""
"Because I helped him rent it under a false name.""
The detective's expression hardened.
"You're going to explain everything to me. Now.""
Thomas nodded.
"I will.""
Hammer looked at Emily.
"Take Noah to the police station. Stay with Detective Price.""
Emily's arms tightened around her son.
"No. I'm not leaving until Michael is found.""
"Emily, we need to move quickly.""
"Then move quickly. But don't ask me to sit somewhere safe while another motherless child disappears into the dark.""
Hammer held her gaze.
Then he nodded.
"You're coming with us.""
Detective Price objected immediately.
"Absolutely not. I won't have civilians interfering with an active search.""
Emily stepped forward.
"Then don't treat me like a civilian. Treat me like the person whose husband spent eight years trying to protect this boy.""
Price hesitated.
Hammer spoke quietly.
"She's right about one thing. Daniel trusted her with the truth, whether he meant to or not.""
The detective exhaled sharply.
"Fine. But you stay behind the officers. If I tell you to stop, you stop.""
Emily nodded.
They reached Old Quarry Road shortly before sunset.
The facility sat beyond an abandoned construction yard, surrounded by a chain-link fence and overgrown brush. A single security light flickered above the entrance. The gate hung crookedly from one hinge.
Hammer studied the building.
"Nobody goes in alone.""
Two officers moved toward the side entrance. Another circled the rear with a flashlight. Detective Price spoke into her radio, requesting backup.
Thomas stood beside the SUV, staring at the building.
"I should've stopped this years ago.""
Hammer looked at him.
"Yes.""
Thomas flinched.
Hammer continued.
"But feeling guilty won't help either boy. What you do next might.""
Thomas nodded slowly.
"I know.""
A sound came from inside the building.
Three sharp knocks.
Then silence.
Emily turned toward the door.
"Michael?""
Another knock.
This time, a child's voice followed.
"Please! Somebody!""
The officers forced the door open.
Inside, they found Michael sitting in a small office, his wrists secured with plastic ties. He was crying but otherwise unharmed. Victor had left him alone with a bottle of water and a small backpack.
Emily rushed forward, but Detective Price stopped her long enough for an officer to cut the ties.
Michael recoiled when the officer reached for him.
"Don't let him take me back!""
"No one is taking you anywhere," Price said firmly.
"You're safe now.""
Michael looked at Emily.
"Are you Noah's mom?""
"Yes, sweetheart.""
He swallowed.
"Is Noah okay?""
Emily knelt.
"He's waiting for you.""
Michael's face crumpled.
"He said I had to stay because my mom owed him money.""
Emily gently took his hand.
"Your mother doesn't owe him anything.""
Michael stared at her.
"Then why did he say she gave me to him?""
Emily had no answer.
An officer approached with a small metal box he'd found beneath the desk.
"Detective, you need to see this.""
Inside lay several USB drives, a bundle of legal documents, and a cassette recorder.
Hammer stared at the recorder.
"Daniel used one of those.""
Thomas leaned closer.
"This is older than the other one.""
A folded note lay beneath the documents.
Hammer recognized Daniel's handwriting immediately.
If Michael is safe, play the final recording. If he's not, keep searching. Victor doesn't know I made a copy.
Detective Price inserted the cassette into the recorder.
A burst of static filled the office.
Then Daniel's voice emerged.
"Ray, if you're hearing this, I failed to bring Michael home myself.""
Hammer lowered his head.
Daniel continued.
"I need you to understand something. I didn't ask you to protect Michael because you were the strongest man I knew. I asked because you were the only man I knew who could admit when he was wrong.""
Hammer closed his eyes.
For years, he'd believed Daniel's final promise concerned Noah and the motorcycle. He'd thought the ride was meant to help a grieving child feel connected to his father.
Now he understood that the ride had always been about two boys.
Two children who had been separated by adults who believed fear was a good enough reason to lie.
Daniel's voice crackled through the speaker.
"Michael's mother, Sarah Bennett, didn't abandon her son. She asked me to take him somewhere safe because Victor was threatening to use the child to control her. Thomas helped us arrange temporary protection, but Victor found a way to turn the paperwork against us.""
Thomas stared at the floor.
Daniel continued.
"I know what Thomas did. He made mistakes. But he wasn't the person who started this. Victor wanted Michael because the boy's mother had discovered what he'd done with the children's charity funds.""
Detective Price glanced at the documents.
"The charity account," she murmured.
The recording continued.
"Victor used money meant for sick children to pay off debts and buy silence. Sarah found the records. She gave them to me. Before I could take them to the police, she disappeared.""
Hammer frowned.
"Sarah Mitchell?""
The nurse from St. Agnes had been named Sarah Mitchell.
But Daniel had just referred to Michael's mother as Sarah Bennett.
Emily looked at the detective.
"How many Sarahs are involved in this?""
Price shook her head.
"I don't know yet.""
Daniel's voice grew weaker.
"If Michael has been found, then the evidence is probably still somewhere in Victor's possession. The file you need isn't in the warehouse. It's in the place where I first learned what kind of man he was.""
The tape clicked.
A second recording began.
This one sounded different.
A younger Daniel spoke in a hurried whisper.
"Ray, I'm at the old garage. Victor's here. He's got the records, and he knows I copied them. If anything happens to me, take the boys to—"
A loud crash interrupted him.
Then a second voice.
Victor's voice.
"You should've minded your own business, Carter.""
The recording stopped.
No one spoke.
Hammer stared at the recorder.
Emily looked at Thomas.
"Did Victor kill my husband?""
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
Hammer rose slowly.
"Then we're going to find out.""
Detective Price collected the documents and handed them to an officer.
"We have enough to reopen the investigation. But we need Victor alive if we're going to establish what happened to Daniel.""
Michael tugged at Emily's sleeve.
"Can I see Noah now?""
She smiled through her tears.
"Of course.""
They drove back to the hospital, where Noah had been waiting with Duke and two other bikers.
The moment he saw Michael enter the room, he ran toward him.
"You're the boy from Daddy's picture!""
Michael nodded.
"You're Noah.""
Noah grinned.
"Do you like motorcycles?""
Michael hesitated.
"I've never ridden one.""
"Neither have I.""
The boys stared at each other.
Then Noah reached into his pocket and pulled out the folded drawing he'd made at the diner.
"I drew you.""
Michael studied the two small figures behind the bearded man.
"You drew me before you met me?""
Noah nodded.
"Daddy told me there were two boys.""
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"My mom used to tell me about a man named Daniel. She said he promised to take me somewhere safe.""
Noah held out the drawing.
"Maybe we can go together.""
Michael took it carefully.
For the first time since they'd found him, he smiled.
Across the room, Hammer stood beside Emily.
She looked at the two boys, then at the recording in Detective Price's hands.
"Ray, I need to ask you something.""
He turned.
"Anything.""
"When you found Daniel's letter, why didn't you open it sooner?""
Hammer looked toward the children.
"Because he asked me to wait until his boy found the Harley.""
"But what if Noah had never found you?""
Hammer's expression softened.
"Then I would've broken the promise.""
Emily frowned.
"You would've?""
"Eventually. I should've understood that Daniel wasn't asking me to protect a motorcycle. He was asking me to protect a child.""
He paused.
"I let my grief turn a promise into a rule.""
Emily watched him for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
Before she could respond, Detective Price approached them with a phone pressed to her ear.
She listened silently.
Then her face changed.
"Where?"" she asked.
Another pause.
"Understood. Send the address to my unit.""
She ended the call.
"Victor has been located.""
Hammer straightened.
"Where?""
Price looked at the two boys.
"At the old garage where Daniel made the recording.""
Emily felt a chill move through her.
The detective continued.
"And he isn't alone.""
She held up a photograph taken by a traffic camera.
Victor stood beside a woman with silver hair.
A woman Emily recognized.
Sarah Mitchell.
The hospital nurse who had helped them uncover the truth.
The woman who had supposedly been trying to protect Michael.
Emily stared at the photograph.
"Why is she with him?""
May you like
Detective Price's voice turned grim.
"Because Sarah Mitchell isn't the woman she claimed to be.""
