Chapter 6: The Boy Who Was Never Supposed to Be Found

Nobody spoke after Thomas revealed where Michael had been living.

Even Hammer, who had spent thirty years facing men who threatened him with knives, guns, and threats whispered in parking lots, seemed momentarily unable to find the right words.

"You're telling me," he said at last, "that a child Daniel spent years trying to protect has been living under Victor Bennett's roof?""

Thomas nodded.

"Victor took custody after the original foster family moved out of state. He claimed he was Michael's legal guardian.""

"Was he?""

"No.""

Thomas opened the briefcase and removed a stack of court documents.

"Victor used forged consent forms. He told the court that Michael's mother had named him as the child's guardian before she died. But she never signed those papers.""

Sarah looked sick.

"How did he get away with it?""

"Money. Connections. And people who were too frightened to challenge him.""

Emily stood beside the window, her arms wrapped around herself.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Thomas looked at her with exhausted eyes.

"Because Victor threatened Noah.""

The room went completely still.

Emily turned slowly.

"What did you say?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"He knew Daniel had a son. He knew Daniel had helped hide evidence against him. When Daniel got sick, Victor began asking questions about your family.""

Emily's mouth went dry.

"What kind of questions?""

"He wanted to know where Noah went to school. Who picked him up. Whether Daniel had told you anything about Michael.""

Hammer took one step forward.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"Because Victor told me you were the most dangerous man in Cedar Falls. He said if I involved you, he'd make sure Noah paid for it.""

Hammer's expression hardened.

"That man doesn't know what dangerous means.""

"Maybe not," Thomas replied.

"But I knew what he was capable of.""

Emily stared at her brother.

"You let me believe Daniel had kept secrets from me. You let me believe my husband might have been unfaithful. You let me spend eleven months wondering what he hadn't told me.""

Thomas bowed his head.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Her voice broke.

"You have no idea what it's like to sit beside your husband's empty chair and wonder whether you ever really knew him.""

Thomas didn't defend himself.

He simply stood there, holding the edge of the table as though it were the only thing keeping him upright.

"I thought I was protecting you," he whispered.

Emily wiped her cheeks.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

Hammer looked down at the recorder.

"Enough talking. We need to find Michael.""

Thomas shook his head.

"You can't just walk into Victor's house.""

"Watch me.""

"Ray, listen. Victor has security cameras, two men at the gate, and a private security team that follows him everywhere. If he sees you coming, he'll move Michael before we get within a mile of the property.""

Hammer looked at Duke.

"Call the boys.""

Duke pulled out his phone.

"How many?""

"All of them.""

Thomas stared at him.

"What are you planning?""

Hammer's gaze shifted to Noah.

"Something Daniel should've been able to do himself.""

Emily stepped between them.

"Absolutely not. You are not taking my eight-year-old son anywhere near that man.""

"I'm not taking him to Victor.""

"Then where are you going?""

"To find the boy your husband died protecting.""

Emily looked at Noah.

He had been sitting quietly in the corner, drawing a little motorcycle on the back of an old hospital brochure. His tongue stuck out slightly as he concentrated on the wheels.

When he noticed everyone looking at him, he stopped drawing.

"Are we going to find the other boy?""

Hammer crouched beside him.

"Yes, son.""

"Can I meet him?""

"Not until we know he's safe.""

Noah considered this.

"Then make him safe.""

Hammer's face tightened.

For a moment, Daniel's voice seemed to echo inside his head.

Make sure my boy knows a promise can survive the person who made it.

Hammer rose.

"We're going to do this properly. No threats. No breaking into houses. We get the authorities involved, and we make sure Michael can't be moved again.""

Thomas stared at him in surprise.

"You're going to call the police?""

"I should've done it eleven months ago.""

Sarah nodded.

"I'll contact the hospital's legal department. We have copies of the original records.""

Emily looked at Thomas.

"And you're going to tell the police everything.""

He nodded.

"Everything.""

Within twenty minutes, the consultation room had become a command center. Sarah made calls to the hospital administrator. Thomas contacted a lawyer who had represented Daniel during the charity investigation. Hammer stood near the window, speaking in a low voice with Duke and the other bikers.

Emily took Noah into the hallway.

She needed a moment away from the photographs, the documents, and the awful realization that her husband had carried this burden alone.

They sat on a bench beneath a framed picture of the hospital's founding doctors.

Noah leaned against her.

"Mom?""

"Yes?""

"Was Daddy a bad man?""

Emily turned toward him so quickly that he blinked.

"No. Never think that.""

"But he kept secrets.""

She took his hands.

"Sometimes people keep secrets because they're afraid. Sometimes they make mistakes because they don't know how to ask for help.""

"Did Daddy make a mistake?""

Emily thought about Daniel's shaky handwriting, the photograph wrapped in blue cloth, and the letter he had entrusted to a man he knew would never abandon his promise.

"I think Daddy was trying to do something good," she said.

"But he should have let us help him.""

Noah nodded slowly.

"Then when I grow up, I'll tell people when I'm scared.""

Emily kissed his forehead.

"That's a very good promise.""

A door opened at the end of the corridor.

Hammer emerged with Duke behind him.

"We've got a lead," Hammer said.

Thomas followed them, carrying the digital recorder.

"The lawyer found a current address for Michael. He's enrolled at a private school outside town.""

Emily rose.

"How old is he?""

"Eight," Thomas answered.

"Same as Noah.""

Noah's face brightened.

"He's my age?""

"Yes.""

"Does he like motorcycles?""

Thomas managed a faint smile.

"I don't know, buddy.""

"Does he know about Daddy?""

Nobody answered.

Hammer knelt beside Noah.

"We're going to find out.""

A uniformed police officer approached from the elevator. Behind him walked a woman in a charcoal suit carrying a thick folder.

"Mr. Dawson?"" she asked.

"I'm Detective Laura Price. We've been reviewing the Bennett investigation.""

Hammer stood.

"Then you know who Victor is.""

"I know enough to understand that we need to move carefully.""

She opened her folder and showed them a photograph.

It depicted a large brick house surrounded by tall iron gates. A black sedan was parked in the driveway.

The same sedan Emily had seen outside the hospital.

Detective Price pointed to a figure standing near the front entrance.

"That's Victor Bennett.""

Then she turned the page.

The second photograph showed a boy in a school uniform standing beside him.

Dark hair. Narrow shoulders. A guarded expression.

Emily felt her breath catch.

There was something about the boy's eyes.

Something painfully familiar.

"Is that Michael?"" she whispered.

Detective Price nodded.

"According to the records, yes.""

Noah moved closer to the photograph.

He studied the boy for several seconds.

Then he pointed at a tiny detail near the child's left wrist.

"Mom.""

Emily looked down.

A blue band was visible beneath the boy's sleeve.

Noah's voice became almost inaudible.

"That's the same blue as Daddy's picture.""

Hammer stared at the photograph.

The hospital band in Daniel's old picture had been blue.

Michael was wearing one too.

But this photograph had been taken only three days earlier.

Emily looked at the detective.

"Why is he wearing a hospital band?""

Detective Price's expression changed.

"That's exactly why we came here.""

She opened the folder and removed a medical report.

"Michael was admitted to St. Agnes two nights ago. Victor claimed the boy had suffered a fall.""

Sarah hurried forward.

"I was on duty that night. Michael was never admitted.""

Detective Price nodded grimly.

"Because the report was filed under another name.""

She placed the document on the bench.

The patient listed on the report was not Michael Bennett.

It was *Noah Carter*.

Emily stared at the page.

Her son's full name.

His date of birth.

His medical identification number.

Every detail was correct.

Except Noah had never been admitted to the hospital.

Detective Price lowered her voice.

"Someone has been using your son's identity to access medical records and move money through a hospital charity account.""

Hammer's hands curled slowly into fists.

"Victor?""

"We believe so. But there's a bigger problem.""

She pointed to the final page.

A transfer authorization had been submitted that morning, requesting that Michael be moved to an undisclosed medical facility.

The signature belonged to a judge who had died six months earlier.

Emily looked at Thomas.

He had gone completely white.

"Thomas?"" she whispered.

He stared at the forged signature.

Then he said something that made Hammer turn toward him.

"I know who did this.""

"Who?"" Emily demanded.

Thomas looked at Noah.

Then at the hospital corridor.

"The person who signed that authorization is dead," he said.

"But the person who delivered it is still alive.""

He reached into his coat and removed a small business card.

On it was the name of a private investigator.

Beneath the name, someone had written a message in Daniel's handwriting.

*IF MICHAEL IS EVER FOUND, DON'T TRUST THE PERSON WHO BRINGS HIM HOME.*

Hammer read the words twice.

Then the hospital's fire alarm began to scream.

Lights flashed overhead.

Patients poured into the corridor as nurses shouted instructions.

Detective Price grabbed the folder.

"Everybody stay together!""

But when Emily turned toward the bench, Noah was gone.

His dinosaur T-shirt had disappeared into the moving crowd.

And through the glass doors at the end of the hallway, Hammer saw a black sedan pulling away from the curb.

The rear window was open.

May you like

A small hand pressed against the glass from inside.

A hand holding a white paint marker.
