Chapter 3: The Secret Daniel Took to His Grave

Emily didn't touch the second photograph.

She stared at it as if the glossy paper might suddenly turn into something harmless if she waited long enough.

Daniel stood beside the woman in the picture wearing the same backward baseball cap he'd worn in the first photograph. His beard was shorter, his face fuller, and his smile unmistakable.

The woman cradled a newborn wrapped in a pale hospital blanket.

Daniel's hand rested gently on the baby's head.

He looked happy.

Not polite-happy. Not the exhausted smile he'd worn through the last months of his illness.

He looked completely, impossibly happy.

Emily pushed back from the table.

“No.””

Hammer set the letter down.

“Emily—”

“No. Don't say my name like you know what I'm thinking.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“Who is she?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I knew Daniel. I didn't know every part of his life.””

“Then why do you have this?””

“Because he gave it to me.””

“When?””

Hammer hesitated.

Emily's voice rose.

“When?””

“The week before he died.””

She stood so quickly that her chair struck the wall.

“You knew he had another woman?””

“No.””

“You knew he had a baby?””

“No.””

“You've had this picture for eleven months, and you never thought I deserved to know?””

Hammer's scarred hands rested flat on the table.

“I thought you deserved the truth. I also thought I had no right to decide when you were ready to hear it.””

Emily let out a broken laugh.

“You don't get to make that decision for me either.””

“No,” he said quietly.

“I don't.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Noah slid out of the booth.

He walked around the table and looked at the photograph.

“Is that me?””

Emily turned toward him.

“No, sweetheart.””

“How do you know?””

“Because—”

She stopped.

She knew Daniel had been faithful. She knew the man in that picture had loved her. She knew the life they had built together, from their first cramped apartment to the small house where Noah had learned to ride a bicycle.

But she had never seen this photograph.

She had never seen that woman.

And she had never heard Daniel mention a baby.

Hammer carefully took the photograph from the table.

“There's a date written here.””

He turned it over.

Beneath the words THE DAY I FOUND HIM, a faint date appeared in blue ink.

It was dated eight years earlier.

The year Noah was born.

Emily's knees weakened.

“That's impossible.””

Hammer studied her face.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was with me when Noah was born. He never left the hospital. He held my hand the entire time.””

She looked down at the picture again.

“He couldn't have been somewhere else.””

“Maybe the photograph was taken later,” Duke offered from nearby.

Emily shook her head.

“No. Look at his wrist.””

Everyone leaned closer.

The hospital band around Daniel's left wrist carried a faint printed date.

The same date written on the back.

The date of Noah's birth.

Emily covered her mouth.

For eight years, she'd believed that day was the beginning of the happiest chapter of their lives.

Now, a photograph threatened to turn it into something else.

Hammer returned to the letter.

“There may be an explanation.””

Emily looked at him sharply.

“Then find it.””

He unfolded the final sheet.

“Ray, I know what this photograph looks like. I know what Emily will think when she sees it. But I need her to understand that I wasn't hiding another family from her.””

Emily grabbed the edge of the table.

“Then what was he hiding?””

Hammer continued.

“The woman in the picture is named Sarah Mitchell. If she's still in Cedar Falls, she may be the only person who can explain why I made you keep this secret.””

Duke stood.

“Sarah Mitchell?””

Hammer looked up.

“You know her?””

“I knew a Sarah Mitchell. Worked at St. Agnes Hospital years ago. Pediatric ward, I think.””

Emily's face changed.

“St. Agnes?””

Duke nodded slowly.

“That's where Daniel was treated during his first surgery.””

“No,” Emily whispered.

“His first surgery was at County General.””

Duke frowned.

“Not according to what I remember.””

Emily turned to Hammer.

“My husband had only one surgery before Noah was born. A minor procedure after a motorcycle accident. He never told me about another hospital.””

Hammer said nothing.

Duke took a step closer.

“Ray, Daniel spent several weeks at St. Agnes before he met Emily. That's where we first met him, too. He was helping another patient.””

Emily's voice was barely audible.

“What patient?””

Duke looked at Hammer.

Hammer gave him a small nod.

“A little boy,” Duke said.

“About three years old. The kid had been abandoned at the hospital. No family came to visit him. Daniel used to sit with him for hours.””

Noah climbed back into the booth.

“Daddy liked helping people.””

“He did,” Duke replied.

Emily shook her head.

“Why didn't Daniel tell me?””

Hammer looked at the photograph.

“Maybe he was trying to protect someone.””

“Who?””

Before Hammer could answer, his phone rang.

The screen displayed a number he hadn't seen in years.

He answered.

“Dawson.””

A woman's voice came through, faint and hurried.

“Ray? It's Sarah Mitchell.””

Hammer stood immediately.

“Sarah. I've been looking for you.””

“I know.”” Her breathing sounded uneven.

“I heard you were asking about Daniel.””

“I'm sitting with his wife and son right now.””

There was a long silence.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Does Emily have the photograph?””

Emily leaned toward the phone.

“Yes. I have it. Who is the woman holding that baby?””

Sarah drew a shaky breath.

“Emily, I need you to listen carefully. Daniel wasn't having an affair. He wasn't hiding a second family.””

Emily gripped the table.

“Then explain the picture.””

“I will. But not over the phone.””

“Why not?””

“Because the child in that photograph is alive. And he deserves to hear the truth from someone who can explain what happened.””

Hammer's face tightened.

“Where are you?””

“St. Agnes. Room 214.””

“Stay there.””

“Ray, wait. There's something else.””

Hammer stopped.

Sarah's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Daniel left a file here before he died. He told me to give it to you only when Noah found the Harley.””

Hammer looked toward the window.

Outside, the white drawing remained across the black tank, the little figure still unfinished.

“What file?””

“The file explains why Daniel chose you. Why he trusted you with Noah. And why he made me promise never to tell Emily the truth until the boy was old enough to understand.””

Emily reached for the phone.

“I'm coming with you.””

Sarah answered before Hammer could speak.

“There's one more thing you need to know, Emily.””

“What?””

“The baby in that photograph wasn't Daniel's son.””

Emily's breath caught.

Sarah continued, her voice trembling.

“He was the child Daniel promised to save.””

Then the line went dead.

For several seconds, Hammer stared at the phone.

Noah tugged at his vest.

“Mr. Hammer?””

“Yeah, son?””

“Can I finish my picture now?””

Hammer looked at the Harley.

He looked at the letter.

Then he looked at the boy whose father had left him a promise no one had yet fully understood.

“Not yet,” he said gently.

“First, we're going to find out what your daddy started.””

He held out his hand.

Noah took it.

And as they walked toward the door, Emily noticed something written in tiny letters along the bottom edge of the second photograph.

A name.

One she recognized immediately.

Because it belonged to the child she had once been told was dead.

May you like

The child her husband had secretly searched for eight years.

And the child whose existence could destroy everything Emily believed about the day her son was born.
