Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back for the Boy

For several seconds, Emily couldn't move.

Through the consultation room window, she could see the black sedan parked near the hospital entrance. Its tinted windows reflected the pale afternoon sky, concealing whoever sat inside.

Thomas Reed was supposed to be in Ohio.

He was supposed to be running a small construction business, raising his teenage daughter, and calling Emily every Thanksgiving with the same jokes he'd told for twenty years.

He was supposed to be the one person in her family who had never lied to her.

"Sarah," Emily said carefully, "I want you to tell me exactly what my brother did.""

Sarah closed the folder.

"I can tell you what the records show. I can't tell you what was in his heart.""

"Then show me the records.""

Sarah slid the transfer authorization across the desk.

Thomas's signature sat at the bottom beside the words TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE CUSTODY.

A second signature appeared beneath it.

Daniel Carter.

Emily stared at her husband's name.

"He signed this?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed Michael was in danger.""

Hammer leaned forward.

"From whom?""

Sarah hesitated.

"Michael's biological father had been involved in a criminal investigation. The mother had asked the hospital to keep the child's identity confidential. When she died, someone began asking questions about the baby.""

"Thomas?"" Emily asked.

Sarah nodded.

"He claimed he was acting on behalf of the family. Daniel disagreed.""

Emily pressed a hand against her forehead.

"My brother had no connection to that woman.""

"Not directly," Sarah said.

"But he had connections to the man who was searching for Michael.""

Hammer's expression darkened.

"Who was the father?""

Sarah looked toward the door before answering.

"His name was Victor Bennett.""

Duke, who had been standing in the hallway, stepped into the room.

"Victor Bennett?""

Sarah nodded.

Duke's face hardened.

"I knew that name. He was a local businessman. Owned three towing companies and a scrapyard. He used to hire men to intimidate anyone who owed him money.""

Hammer looked at Emily.

"Your brother worked for him?""

"Thomas said he handled some contracts for Victor's companies.""

"Did he tell you what kind?""

Emily shook her head.

"No.""

She sat down heavily.

All her life, Thomas had been the protective older brother who walked her home from school and threatened any boy who made her cry. When their father died, Thomas had helped her pay the bills. When Noah was born, he'd brought a rocking chair and assembled it in the nursery without being asked.

She had trusted him.

And now she was looking at his signature on a document that might have separated an infant from the only family he had.

Sarah continued.

"Daniel discovered that Michael's mother had been trying to leave Victor. She'd collected evidence against him. She was afraid that if Victor found the baby, he'd use the child to control her family.""

Emily's eyes widened.

"Why would Daniel get involved?""

"Because he knew her.""

"How?""

Sarah took a breath.

"Before Daniel met you, he worked as a mechanic at a small garage outside town. Michael's mother brought her car there when she was pregnant. Daniel helped her repair it after Victor's men sabotaged the engine.""

Hammer rubbed his forehead.

"Daniel never told me that part.""

"He didn't tell many people," Sarah said.

"He knew Victor had a temper. He also knew the man had friends who could make problems disappear.""

Emily looked again at the photograph of Daniel holding the newborn.

"He was trying to protect Michael.""

"Yes.""

"And Thomas helped Victor take him?""

Sarah didn't answer immediately.

"Thomas signed the transfer papers. But Daniel signed a separate document that allowed Michael to be placed with a protected foster family. The records show both men believed they were doing the right thing.""

"That's impossible," Emily said.

"They couldn't both be protecting him.""

"They could if they were protecting him from different things.""

A sharp knock interrupted them.

Everyone turned toward the door.

A hospital security officer stood outside.

"Ms. Mitchell? There's a man downstairs asking for you. He says it's urgent.""

Sarah's face drained of color.

"Did he give you his name?""

The guard checked his notes.

"Thomas Reed.""

Emily rose so quickly her chair toppled backward.

"Let him come up.""

Hammer stepped between her and the door.

"Wait.""

"That's my brother.""

"And this is a hospital room with a child in it. Let security bring him up. Nobody walks in here until we know why he's here.""

Emily stared at him.

"You don't get to tell me whether I can see my own brother.""

"No," Hammer said.

"But I do get to tell you that if he was involved in what happened to Michael, we shouldn't pretend this is a family reunion.""

The security officer waited.

Emily took a shaky breath.

"Bring him up.""

Three minutes later, Thomas Reed entered the room.

He looked older than Emily remembered. His hair had thinned at the temples, and his expensive navy coat hung loosely from his shoulders. He carried a leather briefcase in one hand and a phone in the other.

When he saw Emily, he stopped.

"Em.""

She didn't move toward him.

"Tell me you didn't do it.""

Thomas glanced at Sarah.

Then at Hammer.

Finally, his eyes landed on Noah.

"What is he doing here?""

Emily's voice cracked.

"He's my son. Answer the question.""

Thomas set his briefcase on the desk.

"Whatever you've been told, it's not the whole story.""

"Did you sign the papers that took Michael out of this hospital?""

Thomas looked down.

"Yes.""

Emily closed her eyes.

"Why?""

"Because Victor Bennett was threatening everyone involved. Michael's mother was dead, and there was no safe place for the baby to go.""

"You could have told us.""

"I couldn't.""

"You could have told Daniel!""

Thomas's head snapped up.

"Daniel knew.""

The room went silent.

Emily stared at him.

"What?""

Thomas swallowed.

"Daniel knew exactly what I was doing. He agreed to help me.""

Hammer's fists tightened.

"That's not what Sarah's records say.""

"Then the records are incomplete.""

Thomas opened his briefcase and removed a sealed document.

"I have the original agreement. Daniel signed it three days before Michael was transferred.""

Emily reached for it, but Thomas pulled it back.

"Not until you hear me out.""

Hammer stepped closer.

"Give her the paper.""

Thomas looked at the enormous biker, then at the eleven men gathering outside the room.

He slowly handed it over.

Emily unfolded the document.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did Thomas's.

But there was another name above them.

A name that made Sarah gasp.

*RAYMOND DAWSON.*

Hammer took the page from Emily.

He studied the signature.

His face turned gray.

"That's not mine.""

Thomas gave a bitter laugh.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""

Hammer's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Someone forged my signature?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No. Someone used your name to hide what really happened to Michael.""

He opened the briefcase again and removed a small digital recorder.

"Daniel gave me this before he died. He told me to keep it safe until Noah found the Harley.""

Emily's heart hammered.

"Why didn't you give it to us?""

Thomas looked at his niece.

"Because I was waiting for the person who ordered Michael's transfer to show himself.""

Hammer stared at him.

"Who ordered it?""

Thomas pressed the recorder's play button.

A man's voice filled the room.

Low.

Calm.

Unmistakably familiar to Hammer.

The voice belonged to Victor Bennett.

And the first words out of his mouth were:

"If anything happens to Daniel Carter, make sure the boy never finds out who his father really was.""

Noah gripped Emily's hand.

"Mom?""

She pulled him close.

But the recording continued.

Victor's voice grew colder.

"And if Hammer ever tries to finish that ride, stop him. Because the Harley isn't the only thing Daniel left behind.""

A click sounded.

Then silence.

Hammer stared at the recorder.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Emily whispered, "What does he mean?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Daniel discovered that Victor had stolen money from a charity fund established for sick children. Michael's mother found the evidence. Daniel helped her hide it.""

"And the ride?"" Hammer asked.

Thomas's face tightened.

"Daniel wasn't talking about a motorcycle ride. He was talking about taking Michael to the courthouse to testify.""

Emily looked at Noah.

Her son had drawn his father on the Harley because he thought he was finishing a promise.

But the promise had been connected to something much bigger.

Hammer slowly folded the forged agreement.

"Where is Michael now?""

Thomas didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the hallway.

A nurse hurried past the open door, pushing an empty wheelchair.

Then Thomas spoke.

"He's been living in Cedar Falls for the past three years.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"With whom?""

May you like

Thomas met her eyes.

"With Victor Bennett.""
