Chapter 9: The Last Secret In The Family
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid of the stranger outside our house.
Not because of the message.
Not even because someone had threatened my unborn child.
I couldn’t sleep because one thought kept repeating in my mind.
Someone had been watching us for months.
Someone knew every secret.
Every document.
Every conversation.
Every moment when I was vulnerable.
And somehow, they were always one step ahead.
Marcus stayed awake beside me until sunrise.
Every few minutes, he checked the security cameras.
Every few minutes, he looked toward the nursery window.
The man I knew as my husband looked different.
Not weaker.
Not broken.
Determined.
At seven in the morning, Daniel called.
The attorney’s voice was tense.
“Marcus, we found him.””
Marcus immediately sat up.
“Who?””
“The lawyer.””
My heart started racing.
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He was hiding in an old office building owned by the Carter family.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“My father’s old building?””
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
The past wasn’t buried.
It had been waiting.
An hour later, we arrived with Daniel and the police.
The building looked abandoned.
Dust covered the windows.
The hallway smelled like old paper and forgotten memories.
Marcus walked slowly.
“This place used to be my father’s second office.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You never came here?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Marcus stopped.
“Because after he died, my mother told me never to enter.””
Everyone went silent.
Daniel exchanged a look with me.
We reached the last door.
Locked.
The officer broke it open.
Inside was a room full of files.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Medical documents.
My stomach turned.
This wasn’t an office.
It was an archive of secrets.
Daniel opened the nearest box.
“Emma…”
I stepped closer.
Inside were copies of my medical records.
My pregnancy records.
My hospital visits.
Everything.
Someone had been collecting information about me.
Marcus looked furious.
“Why?””
No one answered.
Then a voice came from the corner.
“Because your father was afraid.””
Everyone turned.
A man stepped out from behind a shelf.
Older.
Tired.
Defeated.
The lawyer.
Marcus moved forward.
“You.””
The man raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
“You ruined my family.””
The lawyer looked at him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your family was already ruined.””
I felt anger rise.
“Then explain.””
He looked at the files.
“Your father discovered the truth about Victoria, Brielle, and Emma’s mother years ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
The lawyer sighed.
“He found out the families had been connected long before anyone admitted.””
I stepped forward.
“And my pregnancy?””
His eyes softened.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
The words chilled me.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Marcus.
“Your father believed someone would try to use Emma’s pregnancy to expose everything.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“Who?””
The lawyer looked down.
“Your mother.””
Silence.
Again.
But this time, it felt different.
Because I finally understood.
Victoria wasn’t the mastermind.
She was part of the secret.
But not the beginning.
The lawyer continued.
“She discovered that Emma’s mother had kept evidence from years ago.””
“What evidence?””
He opened a drawer.
Inside was a small envelope.
He handed it to me.
“My father left this.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother’s.
My hands shook.
The letter was short.
*If anything happens to me, tell Emma the truth. She deserves to know who she really is.*
I looked up.
“Who I really am?””
The lawyer nodded.
“Your mother discovered something about your birth.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
The lawyer took a breath.
“Emma was adopted.””
The room went silent.
The world stopped.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
I shook my head.
“No, that’s not true.””
The lawyer looked sorry.
“Your mother loved you. She raised you. But biologically…”
He paused.
“You are connected to the Carter family.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
The lawyer looked at me.
“Emma is your father’s daughter.””
Marcus stepped back.
I couldn’t breathe.
My entire life.
My memories.
My childhood.
Everything changed in one sentence.
“No.””
The lawyer continued gently.
“Your mother found out shortly before she died. She was planning to tell you.””
“Why didn’t she?””
His expression darkened.
“Because someone stopped her.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
The lawyer looked at the doorway.
And everyone followed his gaze.
Because standing there was the one person nobody expected.
Victoria.
She had tears in her eyes.
Marcus froze.
“Mom?””
Victoria looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
My voice shook.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“How long?””
“Since before you married Marcus.””
The betrayal hurt more than anything.
“You let me marry him knowing this?””
Victoria cried.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
She looked broken.
“Because I was afraid.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Afraid of what?””
Victoria whispered:
“That if Emma knew she was my husband’s daughter…”
She looked at me.
“She would find out the truth about what happened the night she was born.””
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“What happened?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“When your mother discovered the truth, she confronted your father.””
“And?””
Victoria’s voice broke.
“She was killed.””
Nobody moved.
Killed.
The word felt impossible.
I looked at Victoria.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I knew someone in this family was responsible.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Victoria looked at me.
“I spent years trying to find out.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from the lawyer’s desk.
An old phone.
The lawyer picked it up.
His face changed immediately.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then fear.
“No.””
He looked at us.
“No, they’re here.””
Marcus whispered:
“Who is it?””
The lawyer slowly lowered the phone.
“They know we found the files.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
The lawyer looked directly at me.
May you like
And said:
“The person who ordered your mother’s death.””
