Chapter 7: The Woman Who Controlled Everything

The signature belonged to someone I never expected.

*Victoria Carter.*

Marcus’s mother.

I stared at the name.

His mother.

The same woman who had smiled at me during family dinners.

The same woman who had held my hand when I announced my pregnancy.

The same woman who cried beside me after we lost the baby.

My stomach turned.

“No.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I don’t understand.””

I watched him read the letter again.

His hands shook.

“My mother?””

He sounded like he was trying to convince himself.

“She wouldn’t.””

But I remembered something.

Something small.

Something I ignored.

After the miscarriage, Victoria had said:

“Sometimes things happen because they were never meant to be.””

At the time, I thought she was comforting me.

Now those words felt different.

Marcus sat down.

“I need to talk to her.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Not alone.””

He looked at me.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“I have spent months carrying someone else’s secret.””

I looked at the letter.

“I’m done being the only person who doesn’t know the truth.””

We drove to Victoria’s house that afternoon.

The mansion looked exactly the same.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Untouchable.

Just like her.

Victoria opened the door with a smile.

Then she saw our faces.

The smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

Marcus held up the letter.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Where did you get that?””

Marcus stared.

“You recognize it?””

Victoria said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

I stepped forward.

“Everyone says that.””

Victoria looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“How long?””

Victoria sat down.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

She covered her face.

“From your family.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You mean yourself?””

Victoria looked hurt.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Your father made mistakes.””

Marcus froze.

“My father?””

Victoria nodded.

“He was involved in something he shouldn’t have been.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Everything.””

The room felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

She swallowed.

“Your mother found out.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother?””

Victoria nodded.

“She discovered what your father had done.””

Marcus frowned.

“My father and Emma’s mother knew each other?””

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.””

The truth felt like a puzzle where every missing piece was painful.

“What did they do?””

Victoria whispered:

“They tried to separate you from Marcus.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because they believed your marriage would expose everything.””

Marcus stepped back.

“This is insane.””

Victoria reached for him.

“I was trying to stop it.””

He moved away.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But devastating.

“You were part of it.””

Victoria began crying.

“I made one mistake.””

I stared.

“One?””

She looked at me.

“I hid the truth.””

Marcus looked furious.

“What truth?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

She walked to a cabinet.

She removed a small box.

Inside was a stack of documents.

She handed one to Marcus.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

Victoria whispered:

“Your father’s final report.””

Marcus scanned the page.

Then looked at me.

His eyes filled with horror.

“Emma…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He handed me the paper.

I read the title.

*CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY INVESTIGATION.*

My heart stopped.

Because underneath it was a name.

A name that explained why everyone had been desperate to hide the truth.

The investigation wasn’t about Marcus.

May you like

It wasn’t about Brielle.

It was about me.
