Chapter 5: The Name On The Payment Record

The name on the document stared back at me like a stranger’s face.

*Marcus Carter.*

My husband.

The man who had held my hand through every nightmare.

The man who had cried with me when we lost our baby.

The man who had promised me, “Whatever happens, we face it together.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The attorney, Daniel, looked between us carefully.

“I know this is difficult to understand,” he said.

I couldn’t look away from the paper.

The transaction details were clear.

A payment had been made from an account connected to Marcus.

The date.

The amount.

The hospital reference number.

Everything matched.

My fingers went numb.

“Marcus…”

My voice was barely a whisper.

He didn’t move.

He looked as shocked as I felt.

“This isn’t possible.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“We need to be careful. A transaction connected to someone does not automatically mean they personally authorized it.””

Marcus stood up so quickly his chair scraped against the floor.

“I didn’t do this.””

His voice cracked.

“I would never do this.””

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to.

But there was a tiny part of my mind that remembered all the unanswered questions.

The business trip.

The strange phone calls.

The way he avoided talking about his family’s problems.

I hated myself for even thinking it.

Marcus saw my expression.

And that hurt him more than the accusation.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“I swear to you.””

His eyes were red.

“I lost our baby too.””

The pain in his voice almost broke me.

Almost.

But I needed answers.

“Then tell me why your name is on this.””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The attorney tapped the document.

“We need more information.””

Marcus sat back down slowly.

Daniel continued.

“The hospital records show someone accessed Emma’s medical information without authorization. Someone also requested medication records.””

My stomach tightened.

“What medication?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The medication involved in your pregnancy complications.””

The room became silent.

Marcus closed his eyes.

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, I wondered if there was something he hadn’t told me.

Not because he wanted to hurt me.

But because he was afraid.

“Marcus,” I whispered.

He opened his eyes.

“What?””

“Is there anything you’re not telling me?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A flicker of fear.

Then guilt.

“I…”

He stopped.

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked away.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

The words felt like a knife.

“Tell me what?””

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

“The week before we lost the baby, I received a call.””

“From who?””

He swallowed.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She said she wanted to talk about our marriage.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“She thought I was ruining your life.””

I laughed softly.

It wasn’t happiness.

It was disbelief.

“My mother said that?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

I stood up.

“You don’t get to decide what hurts me.””

My voice shook.

“I needed the truth.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I know.””

Daniel quietly gathered the papers.

“I think we need to find out exactly what happened before making assumptions.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Your bank records may tell us whether this was a direct payment or an unauthorized transfer.””

Marcus nodded.

But before we left, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“Hello?””

His face grew paler with every second.

“What?””

A pause.

“No. That’s impossible.””

He looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

The attorney immediately noticed.

“Who is it?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s the hospital.””

My chest tightened.

“What did they say?””

Marcus looked terrified.

“They found another file.””

I stepped closer.

“What file?””

He looked at me.

“The original payment request.””

I waited.

“And it has a second signature.””

My heartbeat grew louder.

“Whose?””

May you like

Marcus whispered:

“Yours.””
