Chapter 2: The Secret She Forced Me To Carry
The ballroom remained frozen.
No music.
No conversations.
No movement.
Just silence.
Marcus held the hospital file in his hands, staring at the paper like it had changed the entire world beneath him.
I watched his expression shift.
Confusion.
Pain.
Then disbelief.
“Emma,” he whispered.
I looked down.
I hated that everyone was watching.
I hated that my deepest wound had become entertainment for strangers.
But most of all, I hated that Brielle had put me in this position.
Marcus looked at his sister.
“Explain.””
Brielle shook her head quickly.
“It’s not what you think.””
Marcus laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Then tell me what it is.””
She glanced around the room.
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because this is my wedding.””
Marcus held up the file.
“No. You made this my business when you put my wife through this.””
Brielle’s eyes flashed.
“You’re choosing her over your own sister?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
Those words broke something inside me.
Because for weeks, I had been carrying that truth alone.
It started three months earlier.
I was sitting in a hospital hallway, staring at a closed door.
The smell of antiseptic filled the air.
My hands rested on my stomach, but there was no longer a heartbeat beneath my fingers.
The doctor had been gentle.
Too gentle.
“Emma,” she said softly, “I’m so sorry.””
I remembered Marcus’s empty chair beside me.
He had been away on a business trip.
I knew he would come home immediately if I called.
But before I could reach my phone, Brielle arrived.
I was shocked to see her.
She walked into the room carrying coffee.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t even speak.
She saw my face.
She understood.
For a moment, she looked almost human.
She sat beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were the first kind words she had given me in months.
I cried.
I told her everything.
I told her about the baby.
I told her about my fear of telling Marcus.
And then she made a strange request.
“Don’t call him yet.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Please.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“I need time to explain something.””
I should have known then.
But grief makes people trust the wrong hands.
She showed me a hospital document.
It was her medical file.
She told me she had been at the hospital that same week.
She told me she was dealing with something serious.
And then she said the sentence I could never forget.
“If Marcus finds out about my file, he’ll hate me forever.””
I believed her.
Because I thought she was scared.
I thought she was my family.
But now, standing in that ballroom, I wondered how much of her fear had been an act.
Marcus turned another page.
His jaw tightened.
“What is this?””
Brielle looked terrified.
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Emma, why did you have this?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could speak, Brielle interrupted.
“She stole it.””
The room gasped again.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She went through my things,” Brielle said.
“She’s obsessed with making me look bad.””
I felt something inside me break.
After everything?
After I protected her?
After I carried her secret?
“You know that’s not true,” I whispered.
Brielle looked directly at me.
And I saw it.
She wasn’t sorry.
She was calculating.
Marcus noticed too.
His face became colder.
“Stop.””
Brielle blinked.
“What?””
“Stop lying.””
The words shocked everyone.
Even Brielle.
Marcus looked at the file again.
“What happened on this date?””
Nobody answered.
The silence grew heavier.
Then an older woman near the front table stood up.
It was Marcus and Brielle’s aunt, Evelyn.
She had been watching everything.
Her face was pale.
“Marcus…”
Everyone turned.
Evelyn slowly walked forward.
“I think you need to know the truth.””
Brielle’s eyes widened.
“Aunt Evelyn, don’t.””
But Evelyn continued.
“She didn’t tell you because she was afraid.””
Marcus stared.
“Afraid of what?””
Evelyn looked at Brielle.
“Because the hospital file isn’t about her illness.””
A chill moved through the room.
“It’s about the baby.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus looked at me.
“What baby?””
Brielle closed her eyes.
And for the first time that night, she looked completely defeated.
Evelyn whispered:
“The baby Emma lost…”
She paused.
May you like
Then looked at Brielle.
“…was not the only baby involved.””
