Chapter 1: The Dress That Tore Everything Apart

Six months pregnant, I thought the worst thing that could happen at my sister-in-law’s wedding was being forced to smile beside people who secretly hated me.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was watching the woman I once defended with my whole heart tear my dress apart in front of two hundred guests.

The ballroom glittered like something from a magazine. Crystal chandeliers hung above us like frozen waterfalls. White roses covered every table. A string quartet played softly near the entrance while servers moved between guests carrying champagne.

Everyone looked perfect.

Everyone except me.

My light-blue gown had been carefully chosen because it made my growing belly look elegant instead of awkward. Marcus had kissed my forehead that morning and told me, “You look beautiful. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong.””

I remembered those words when Brielle Carter walked toward me.

My husband’s younger sister wore a designer wedding dress that probably cost more than my first car. Her smile was flawless, but her eyes were not.

They were sharp.

Angry.

She stopped in front of me near the center of the ballroom.

“Enjoying yourself?”” Brielle asked.

I forced a polite smile.

“It’s your wedding day. I’m happy for you.””

Her lips curved slightly.

“Are you?””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She glanced down at my stomach.

Then she looked back at my face.

“You really came here dressed like that?””

I blinked.

“Brielle, what are you talking about?””

Her voice became louder.

“Everyone is looking at you.””

A few nearby guests turned toward us.

I lowered my voice.

“Please don’t start something today.””

“Start something?”” she repeated, almost laughing.

“You always do that. You act innocent, then pretend you don’t understand why people are upset.””

I felt my heart tighten.

For months, Brielle had been distant. She stopped answering my calls. She ignored my messages. She refused every invitation to spend time together.

I had tried to fix it.

I had brought her flowers.

I had apologized for things I didn’t even understand.

But nothing worked.

“Brielle,” I whispered, “I don’t want to fight.””

“That’s convenient.””

She stepped closer.

“You show up pregnant, wearing a dress everyone notices, and suddenly my wedding becomes about you.””

My mouth fell open.

“Are you serious?””

Her expression hardened.

“You always take everything.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Before I could respond, she grabbed the fabric near my shoulder.

At first, I thought she was fixing my dress.

Then I felt the force.

The violent pull.

The sound of tearing fabric echoed through the ballroom.

RIIIP.

The entire room went silent.

The expensive gown collapsed downward, falling around my feet.

Cold air touched my skin.

My hands instantly covered my belly.

For one horrible second, I couldn’t breathe.

I heard gasps around me.

Someone dropped a glass.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.””

Tears burned my eyes.

“Brielle…”

My voice barely came out.

She stared at me without regret.

“You’re ruining my wedding!””

Her scream traveled across the ballroom.

“You don’t belong here!””

My face burned with humiliation.

I wanted to disappear.

I wanted the floor beneath me to open and swallow me whole.

Then a voice thundered from behind her.

“What did you just do to my wife?””

Marcus.

My husband pushed through the crowd, his face pale with shock.

He immediately took off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders.

His hands trembled.

“Emma,” he whispered, “are you okay?””

I nodded weakly, even though I wasn’t.

Brielle stepped forward.

“She started this!””

Marcus looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“What?””

“She attacked me first,” Brielle said quickly.

“She was jealous. She wanted attention.””

The room shifted.

People looked between us.

I stared at Marcus.

“She’s lying.””

My voice cracked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

He bent down to gather my things, which had fallen from my purse when someone bumped into me during the chaos.

My clutch had hit the marble floor.

The clasp broke.

Everything spilled out.

My lipstick.

My phone.

A small ultrasound photo.

And one sealed hospital envelope.

Marcus froze.

I saw the change in his face.

He slowly picked it up.

My entire body went cold.

Because I knew exactly what it was.

The envelope I had hidden for weeks.

The envelope Brielle had begged me never to show him.

Marcus turned it over.

His eyebrows pulled together.

Printed across the front were the words:

CONFIDENTIAL — BRIELLE CARTER.

The noise in the ballroom disappeared.

Marcus looked at me.

Then at his sister.

“Why,” he asked slowly, “does my pregnant wife have a hospital file with your name on it?””

Brielle’s face changed instantly.

All the confidence vanished.

“Marcus…”

I swallowed hard.

“She told me never to show you.””

My husband looked at me in disbelief.

“What did she tell you?””

Before I could answer, Brielle rushed forward.

“Don’t open that!””

Her hand reached toward the envelope.

Marcus stepped back.

For the first time that night, his sister looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Afraid.

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you hiding?””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Marcus tore the seal open.

And the first page inside made him stop breathing.

Because the name written at the top wasn’t the only thing that shocked him.

May you like

It was the date.

The date was the same day I had lost my first baby.
