Chapter 9: The Reunion Vanessa Tried to Stop

The drive to the coastal town felt endless.

Maya sat in the passenger seat, clutching her mother's letter.

Richard drove.

Daniel followed in a separate car with the documents and a colleague who specialized in estate disputes.

Mrs. Harper had stayed behind to secure the original trust papers.

Nobody spoke much.

Every few minutes, Maya checked her phone.

She had called Amelia three times.

Each time, the call went unanswered.

Finally, Richard broke the silence.

“I need to tell you something.””

Maya kept looking through the windshield.

“What?””

“After Vanessa told me your mother had died, I asked to see the body.””

Maya turned.

“What?””

Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“She said the hospital had already handled everything. She told me there were restrictions because of the complications.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was devastated. I didn't think clearly.””

Maya looked away.

“That's not an excuse.””

“I know.””

He swallowed.

“I also received a letter supposedly written by Amelia.””

Maya turned sharply.

“What letter?””

“It said she wanted Eleanor to raise you and that she didn't want me to contact her family.””

Maya's voice became cold.

“Do you still have it?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In my study at home.””

“Why didn't you mention it earlier?””

Richard looked miserable.

“Because I thought it was true.””

Maya stared at him.

“Dad, what if that letter was forged?””

Richard didn't answer.

They reached the care home shortly after noon.

It was a modest building overlooking the ocean, with white walls and blue shutters.

A nurse met them at the entrance.

“Can I help you?””

Maya stepped forward.

“I'm looking for Amelia. She may be registered under another name.””

The nurse looked at the documents Daniel had sent ahead.

Then she nodded.

“Please come inside.””

They followed her down a quiet corridor.

Maya's heartbeat grew louder with every step.

The nurse stopped outside a room.

“She's awake.””

Maya stared at the closed door.

“Can I go in alone?””

Richard nodded.

“Take your time.””

Maya opened the door.

The room was filled with soft afternoon light.

A woman sat near the window in a pale blue cardigan. Her dark hair had turned silver at the temples, and a blanket rested across her knees.

She was looking out at the ocean.

When the door opened, she turned.

Maya stopped breathing.

It was the woman from the photograph.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably the same face.

Amelia stared at her.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Amelia slowly lifted a trembling hand.

“Maya?””

Maya nodded.

“It's me.””

Amelia's eyes filled.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Maya crossed the room.

She knelt beside the chair and took her mother's hands.

They were warm.

Real.

Alive.

“You're here,” Maya whispered.

Amelia began crying.

“I thought I'd never see you.””

Maya pressed her forehead against her mother's hands.

“I thought you were dead.””

Amelia closed her eyes.

“I know.””

For a long moment, the room filled with nothing but their tears.

Then Amelia touched Maya's cheek.

“You have your father's eyes.””

Maya gave a broken laugh.

“And your smile, apparently.””

Amelia smiled through her tears.

“Yes. I can see that.””

Maya looked around the room.

“How long have you been here?””

“Eleven years.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

Amelia's expression changed.

“I tried.””

Maya sat back.

“What?””

“I wrote letters. I called. I asked the staff to help me reach you.””

“Did you know where I lived?””

“Yes. But Vanessa told me your father had moved away. She said you were attending school overseas.””

Maya felt her stomach tighten.

“I never left.””

“I know that now.””

Amelia took a breath.

“She told me you hated me. She said you believed I had abandoned you.””

Maya shook her head.

“That's not true.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

Amelia squeezed her hands.

“Your grandmother came to see me whenever she could. She told me you were growing up beautifully. She promised she would protect you.””

Maya's eyes filled again.

“Grandma knew where you were?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't she bring you home?””

Amelia looked toward the window.

“She tried. Vanessa had control of the medical paperwork. She claimed I had voluntarily agreed to remain under private care. Eleanor fought her, but by then she was very ill.””

Maya remembered the letter.

“Grandma left me documents.””

Amelia nodded.

“She told me she had placed everything in a safe. She said that when you were old enough, you would understand.””

Maya leaned closer.

“Mom, why did Vanessa do this?””

Amelia's face became serious.

“Because she knew something about your birth.””

Maya held her breath.

Amelia continued.

“Your biological father wasn't Richard.””

Maya stared.

“What?””

Amelia's eyes filled.

“Richard adopted you because he loved me. He knew I was pregnant before we married, and he promised to raise you as his own.””

Maya looked down.

“Then who was my biological father?””

Amelia hesitated.

“His name was Thomas Whitmore.””

Maya frowned.

“Whitmore?””

Amelia nodded.

“Grace was his sister.””

Maya felt dizzy.

“So Grace knew?””

“Yes. She helped me through the pregnancy. Thomas died in an accident before you were born.””

Maya sat back.

“Then why did Vanessa interfere?””

Amelia's expression hardened.

“Because Thomas left behind a substantial inheritance. His family had been fighting over it for years. When I became pregnant, his parents made arrangements to ensure that his child would receive a protected inheritance.””

Maya stared.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Amelia took a breath.

“Your grandmother Eleanor knew about the inheritance. She helped establish the trust because she wanted to protect you from anyone who might try to take it.””

Maya thought about the documents.

The foundation.

The money.

The suspicious transfers.

“Was Vanessa connected to Thomas's family?””

Amelia nodded slowly.

“She worked at the hospital, but before that, she had been involved with someone in Thomas's family. She knew about the inheritance.””

Maya's voice trembled.

“So she married Dad because of the money?””

Amelia looked toward the door.

“That's what I eventually discovered.””

A knock sounded.

Richard entered.

He stopped when he saw Amelia.

His face crumpled.

“Amelia.””

She looked at him.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Richard approached slowly.

“I thought you were dead.””

Amelia's eyes filled again.

“I thought you had abandoned us.””

Richard fell to his knees beside her chair.

“I am so sorry.””

Amelia touched his hair.

“I know.””

Maya watched them.

She wanted to feel happy.

She wanted to celebrate finding her mother.

But there was still too much pain between them.

Richard looked up.

“Vanessa told me you didn't want to see me.””

Amelia shook her head.

“She told me you had chosen to forget us.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I never stopped loving you.””

Amelia's voice was soft.

“Then why did you stop looking?””

He couldn't answer.

Maya looked away.

Outside, the ocean waves struck the rocks below.

For a moment, the room felt peaceful.

Then the nurse appeared at the door.

“I'm sorry to interrupt. There's a visitor asking for Amelia.””

Maya looked up.

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

“She says she's family.””

Amelia's face drained of color.

“Vanessa.””

Maya stood.

“How does she know we're here?””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“She called earlier. She said she was coming to collect some personal belongings.””

Amelia gripped Maya's hand.

“Don't let her take me.””

Maya squeezed her fingers.

“She won't.””

Daniel entered the room.

“We've already contacted the facility director. Nobody can remove Amelia without proper authorization.””

But before anyone could say more, footsteps sounded in the corridor.

A familiar voice rang out.

“Amelia? Darling, where are you?””

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

She was wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a leather handbag.

Her eyes moved from Richard to Maya.

Then she smiled.

“Well,” she said.

“What a touching family reunion.””

Maya stepped between her mother and Vanessa.

“Get out.””

Vanessa raised an eyebrow.

“Still as dramatic as ever.””

“You lied to everyone. You stole money. You hid my mother.””

Vanessa placed her handbag on a chair.

“Careful with those accusations.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Cole, I'm Daniel Harrison. I represent Maya's interests in the Eleanor Whitmore estate.””

Vanessa's smile tightened.

“I don't care who you are.””

“You should. We've obtained evidence of financial misconduct and fraudulent medical documentation.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Do you have any idea how difficult it was to keep this woman alive?””

Amelia looked at her.

“You didn't keep me alive. You kept me hidden.””

Vanessa turned.

“Amelia, please. Don't start.””

“You told me Richard didn't want me.””

“He was grieving.””

“You told me Maya hated me.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“You were confused. You weren't well.””

Maya stepped closer.

“You told me my mother was dead.””

Vanessa's expression became cold.

“And look how wonderfully you turned out.””

Richard stood.

“Vanessa, leave.””

She looked at him.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“Leave.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You can't order me around anymore.””

She opened her handbag and removed a document.

“I have legal authority to act on Amelia's behalf.””

Daniel examined it.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa smiled.

“From the court.””

Daniel studied the page.

Then he looked at Amelia.

“Did you sign this?””

Amelia shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa's smile faltered.

Daniel continued reading.

“This document was executed eleven years ago.””

“Yes,” Vanessa said.

“And it remains valid.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“There's a problem.””

“What?””

“The document appoints Vanessa as Amelia's legal representative. However, the signature appears to be witnessed by someone who died before the stated signing date.””

Vanessa's face changed.

Richard stared at her.

“You forged it?””

Vanessa snapped.

“I did what I had to do!””

The room fell silent.

Amelia began trembling.

Maya moved closer to her mother.

“What did you do, Vanessa?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

For the first time, she didn't bother pretending to be kind.

“I protected my daughter.””

“By stealing my inheritance?””

“Your inheritance?”” Vanessa laughed.

“You think you deserve everything just because Eleanor felt sorry for you?””

Maya's expression hardened.

“I never asked Grandma to give me anything.””

“Exactly. You never asked. You never worked for anything. Everything was handed to you.””

Amelia interrupted.

“She was a child.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“And you should have stayed quiet.””

Daniel quietly signaled to the facility director.

Vanessa noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Ensuring that you don't remove Amelia or destroy any records.””

Vanessa reached into her handbag again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

She threw it onto the bed.

“Fine. Since everyone wants the truth, perhaps you should read this.””

Maya opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a legal agreement dated twenty-four years earlier.

At the bottom was Richard's signature.

Above it was a statement that Maya had been voluntarily surrendered for adoption by her biological mother.

But there was something else.

A clause stating that all future inheritance claims from Thomas Whitmore's estate would be waived.

Maya looked at Richard.

“Did you sign this?””

Richard stared at the document.

“I've never seen it.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Perhaps you should look more carefully.””

Daniel examined the page.

Then he looked at the date.

“This document was notarized three days before Maya was born.””

He turned it over.

A small stamp appeared on the back.

The notary's name was clearly visible.

Daniel's expression changed.

“That's impossible.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

He pointed to the stamp.

“Because this notary was disbarred for identity fraud before this document was supposedly signed.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

Daniel continued.

“And I believe we now have enough evidence to establish that this agreement was fabricated.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

Then she looked at Amelia.

“You have no idea what you started.””

Amelia raised her chin.

“I know exactly what I started. I protected my daughter.””

Vanessa turned toward the door.

But before she could leave, Maya spoke.

“One more thing.””

Vanessa stopped.

Maya held up the photograph from the hospital.

“Why were you standing beside my mother when I was born?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“What were you really trying to take from me?””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

Then she leaned toward Maya and whispered:

“You still don't understand. The inheritance was never the only thing I wanted.””

She glanced toward Amelia.

“I wanted something your mother took from me twenty-four years ago.””

Amelia suddenly gasped.

Her hands began shaking.

“Maya,” she whispered.

Maya turned.

“What?””

Amelia looked at Vanessa.

Then she spoke the words that changed everything.

“She's talking about the original hospital ledger.””

Daniel froze.

“What ledger?””

Amelia swallowed.

“The one proving Vanessa switched two newborn babies that night.””

Maya felt the blood drain from her face.

Vanessa's expression collapsed.

And from the hallway came the sound of someone dropping a metal tray.

A nurse stood frozen in the doorway.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Maya.

May you like

And whispered:

“It's true. There were two babies.””
