Chapter 3: The Announcement Nobody Expected

The ballroom was glowing beneath hundreds of tiny golden lights.

A jazz band played near the fireplace, and guests gathered around the central staircase with champagne glasses in their hands.

Chloe stood on a small platform wearing Maya's handmade angel wings.

Her crystal crown glittered beneath the chandelier.

Vanessa held a microphone.

“Thank you all for joining us tonight,” she began.

“This Halloween party has been especially meaningful for our family.””

Maya stood halfway down the staircase.

Nobody had noticed her yet.

She watched her father standing beside Vanessa, his expression unusually tense.

On the table behind them sat a framed photograph of Eleanor, Maya's grandmother.

Beside it was a thick folder.

Vanessa continued.

“As many of you know, Eleanor was a remarkable woman. She built a wonderful legacy, and we are proud to continue honoring her wishes.””

Maya's stomach tightened.

Mrs. Harper's warning echoed in her mind.

The family trust.

Her name.

The document.

Chloe leaned toward Vanessa and whispered something.

Vanessa smiled.

Then she lifted the microphone again.

“Tonight, I am delighted to announce that Chloe will be taking on a special role in the future of our family's charitable foundation.””

Applause followed.

Chloe placed one hand against her chest.

“Oh, Mom. Thank you!””

Vanessa kissed her cheek.

“You deserve it, sweetheart.””

Maya descended the final steps.

A guest near the staircase noticed her first.

He turned.

Then another woman followed his gaze.

The conversations gradually stopped.

Maya walked into the ballroom.

The black dress moved around her like liquid midnight. Silver details caught the light with every step. Her dark headpiece framed her face, and the small angel pendant rested at her throat.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't angry.

She simply looked magnificent.

A man near the bar whispered, “Who is that?””

His wife answered, “Isn't that Richard's daughter?””

Chloe turned.

Her smile disappeared.

“Mom.””

Vanessa looked over.

For a moment, she didn't recognize Maya.

Then her eyes narrowed.

“What are you wearing?””

Maya stopped a few feet away.

“My costume.””

Vanessa lowered the microphone.

“I told you not to come downstairs looking for attention.””

“I didn't come looking for attention.””

Chloe looked Maya up and down.

“Seriously? You made that out of the trash?””

Maya glanced at the wings on Chloe's back.

“I made mine out of something people threw away. You borrowed yours from someone who actually made them.””

A few guests exchanged smiles.

Chloe's cheeks reddened.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough. You are embarrassing this family again.””

Maya looked at the guests.

“Am I?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

The single word landed harder than a shout.

Richard finally approached.

“Maya, please. We have guests.””

Maya turned toward him.

“Then perhaps you should introduce me.””

Richard blinked.

“What?””

Vanessa quickly stepped between them.

“This is not the time.””

Maya looked at the folder on the table.

“Actually, I think it is.””

She walked toward it.

Vanessa grabbed the folder.

“Don't touch that.””

“Why?””

“Because it contains private family documents.””

Maya held her gaze.

“Then why are you announcing them to everyone?””

Several guests looked at one another.

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Mom is announcing my appointment to the foundation. You have nothing to do with it.””

Maya turned toward her.

“Are you sure?””

Chloe lifted her chin.

“Absolutely.””

Maya looked at Richard.

“Dad, did you sign something?””

He hesitated.

Vanessa answered for him.

“Your father signed a routine administrative document. There's nothing you need to worry about.””

“Then let me see it.””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because you have no legal authority to interfere.””

Maya's heart began beating faster.

She looked again at the document.

At the bottom, beneath the printed text, was a familiar signature.

Richard's.

But there was something else.

A second signature.

One she recognized immediately.

Her grandmother's.

Maya stepped closer.

“That's impossible.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Maya pointed toward the page.

“Grandma died almost two years ago.””

A silence spread through the ballroom.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Don't be ridiculous. That's an old document.””

“Then why are you presenting it as something signed tonight?””

Richard's face had gone pale.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “what is she talking about?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Richard, don't start.””

Maya reached for the folder.

Vanessa pulled it away.

“Get away from my documents!””

The microphone slipped from Vanessa's hand and struck the table.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

At that moment, Mrs. Harper appeared beside the entrance.

She was holding a large cream-colored envelope.

“Maya?””

Maya turned.

Mrs. Harper walked toward her.

“I think you should see this.””

Vanessa's face went completely white.

“Where did you get that?””

Mrs. Harper ignored her.

She handed the envelope to Maya.

Across the front, written in Eleanor's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

To my granddaughter, Maya. Open only when someone tries to take what belongs to you.

Maya stared at the envelope.

Her fingers trembled as she broke the seal.

Inside was a letter and several official-looking documents.

She unfolded the letter first.

The opening sentence made her blood run cold.

My darling Maya, if you are reading this, then Vanessa has finally made the mistake I feared she would.

Maya looked up.

Vanessa was no longer smiling.

“Give me that letter,” she demanded.

Maya continued reading.

There is something your father has never told you about the night he married Vanessa.

Maya's eyes moved to the next line.

And there is a reason she has spent the last four years trying to make you feel like you don't belong in this house.

She looked toward Richard.

His face had turned ashen.

“Dad?””

He took a step toward her.

“Maya, don't read that here.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Richard, stop her!””

But Maya was already unfolding the second page.

At the top was the name of a law firm.

Below it was a date.

And beneath that, a statement that made her knees almost buckle.

The house, the foundation, and the majority of Eleanor's estate had never belonged to Richard.

They had been placed in a trust.

A trust with one beneficiary.

Maya.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you tell everyone Chloe was going to inherit the foundation?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No answer came.

Maya lifted the final page.

It contained a photograph of a document with Eleanor's signature, witnessed and notarized six months before her death.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

If Vanessa ever claims otherwise, ask her about the missing original.

Maya slowly raised her eyes.

“What's the missing original?””

Richard closed his eyes.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward and snatched the letter from Maya's hands.

“That's enough!””

She tore at the paper.

But before she could destroy it, Mrs. Harper spoke.

“Careful, Vanessa.””

The older woman reached into her handbag and pulled out a small flash drive.

“Eleanor left more than one copy.””

Vanessa froze.

Mrs. Harper looked directly at her.

“And this one contains the recording of what happened the night you thought nobody was listening.””

The entire ballroom fell silent.

Chloe slowly removed the crystal crown from her head.

“Mom?””

Vanessa stared at the flash drive.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

And Maya finally understood something.

The wings hadn't been the real prize.

May you like

They had simply been the first thing Vanessa wanted to take from her.

*Because the woman who had spent four years telling Maya she didn't belong in that family had been hiding a secret that could destroy everything she had built.*
