Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom lights reflected off the silver embroidery of Maya's dress, but she barely noticed them. Her attention was fixed on the small flash drive resting in Mrs. Harper's palm.

Vanessa looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath her.

“Put that away,” she said.

Mrs. Harper didn't move.

“I'm afraid I can't do that.””

Vanessa stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.

“You have absolutely no right to bring private family matters into this.””

Mrs. Harper raised an eyebrow.

“Private family matters? You mean the matters involving a dead woman's estate and the daughter you have spent years trying to disinherit?””

A murmur traveled through the guests.

Chloe looked from her mother to Mrs. Harper.

“Mom, what's she talking about?””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Chloe, go wait in the car.””

“But—”

“NOW!””

Chloe flinched.

It was the first time Maya could remember seeing her stepsister genuinely afraid of Vanessa.

Richard stepped between them.

“Vanessa, enough. Let us hear what the recording contains.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You're taking her side?””

“I'm asking for the truth.””

“After everything I've done for you?””

Richard looked exhausted.

“That's exactly why I want the truth.””

Mrs. Harper connected the flash drive to a laptop sitting near the DJ's equipment.

A few guests began moving toward the exits.

“Please stay,” Richard said. His voice trembled.

“I think everyone here deserves to understand what has happened.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

The laptop screen flickered.

A video appeared.

The date displayed in the corner was nearly two years earlier.

Maya's breath caught.

It showed her grandmother's study.

The familiar wooden desk. The green curtains. The old brass clock that had always chimed at nine.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was wearing the same pearl necklace she wore tonight.

She looked younger, but her expression was unmistakable.

A moment later, Richard entered the room.

“Why are we doing this again?”” he asked in the recording.

Vanessa placed a folder on the desk.

“Because your mother refuses to understand that she cannot control everything from beyond the grave.””

Richard sighed.

“She has already made her will.””

“And that's precisely the problem.””

Vanessa opened the folder.

“Your mother has left almost everything to Maya. The house, the investment accounts, the foundation. Everything.””

Richard rubbed his face.

“She raised Maya. She wanted her protected.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Protected from what? From her own father?””

“Don't start.””

“Richard, listen to me. We have a daughter too. Chloe deserves a future.””

“She will have one.””

“Not if Maya inherits everything.””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made Maya's fingers go cold.

“Your mother is old. She doesn't need to know what happens to those documents.””

Richard looked up.

“What are you suggesting?””

“I'm suggesting that we correct a mistake before it becomes permanent.””

The recording continued.

Vanessa removed a document from the folder.

“You sign this. It transfers control of the foundation to you. Then you can appoint Chloe as the future director.””

Richard shook his head.

“That's not what the will says.””

“Your mother will never find out.””

“She'll find out if she asks her lawyer.””

Vanessa's voice became colder.

“Then make sure she doesn't ask.””

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Maya turned toward her father.

He looked as though he might collapse.

On the screen, Richard finally signed something.

But the recording wasn't over.

Vanessa picked up the paper and smiled.

“Good. Now we just need the original trust document.””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Where is it?””

“Your mother keeps it in the study safe.””

“And the combination?””

Vanessa smiled again.

“Your daughter knows it.””

Maya stopped breathing.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, the only sound in the ballroom was the faint hum of the laptop.

Then Chloe whispered, “Mom?””

Vanessa rushed toward the computer.

“That's been edited!””

Mrs. Harper stepped in front of her.

“No, it hasn't.””

“You don't know anything about what happened!””

“I was working in this house that night. I heard the conversation. I saw you leave the study carrying a folder.””

Vanessa pointed at her.

“You were supposed to be cleaning the kitchen!””

Mrs. Harper's face hardened.

“And I was. Until I heard you discussing how to steal from a dying woman's granddaughter.””

A woman near the fireplace gasped.

Vanessa turned toward the guests.

“This is absurd. You're all listening to a housekeeper who has been manipulated by a girl throwing a tantrum because she didn't get her way.””

Maya slowly stepped forward.

“I didn't ask anyone to do this.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””

“Then explain it.””

“I don't owe you an explanation!””

Richard finally spoke.

“Vanessa, did you take my mother's original trust documents?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Richard, don't be stupid.””

“Did you?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

Richard's shoulders dropped.

“Oh, God.””

Maya approached the table and examined the documents.

“Mrs. Harper, where did Grandma keep the original?””

“In the small safe behind the painting in her study.””

Maya remembered it.

She had discovered the safe when she was twelve. Her grandmother had shown her how to open it, saying it contained things that were more valuable than jewelry.

The combination was Maya's birthday.

“Did anyone open it after Grandma died?”” Maya asked.

Mrs. Harper nodded.

“Your stepmother did. Two days after the funeral.””

Vanessa snapped.

“Because Richard asked me to organize the estate!””

Richard shook his head.

“I never asked you to remove anything.””

“Of course you did!””

“I never did!””

The argument rose in volume.

Chloe suddenly grabbed Vanessa's wrist.

“Mom, stop.””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

“Let go of me.””

Chloe's eyes were wet.

“Did you steal Grandma Eleanor's papers?””

Vanessa pulled her hand away.

“Don't you dare question me.””

“But you told me Maya was trying to take everything from us.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Because she was!””

Maya stared at her stepsister.

“I never wanted anything from you, Chloe.””

Chloe looked down at the angel wings.

A small feather had become tangled in her bracelet.

She slowly removed the bracelet and pulled the feather free.

“Then why did Mom say you were trying to get us thrown out?””

Maya didn't answer immediately.

Because she had no answer.

She had spent four years believing that being quiet, helpful, and agreeable might finally earn her a place in the family.

Apparently, Vanessa had been telling everyone a completely different story.

Richard approached Maya.

“Sweetheart, I need to explain something.””

Maya looked at him.

“Not here.””

He nodded.

But before he could continue, Mrs. Harper examined the last page in the envelope.

Her expression changed.

“There's another document.””

Maya took it.

It was a letter from Eleanor's attorney, dated three weeks before her death.

The letter stated that an independent audit had been requested after several unexplained withdrawals from the foundation's accounts.

Maya looked at the attached list.

Three transfers.

Then six.

Then twelve.

All made through a company registered under a name she had never heard before.

But the authorized contact was unmistakable.

Vanessa.

Maya slowly raised her eyes.

“Dad, did you know about these withdrawals?””

Richard looked at the pages.

His lips parted.

Then he whispered, “No.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I'm leaving.””

Mrs. Harper stepped aside.

Nobody stopped her.

But just as Vanessa reached the ballroom doors, Maya spoke.

“There's one thing you should know.””

Vanessa turned.

Maya held up the audit report.

“Grandma didn't leave this house without protection. She knew something was wrong.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“And tomorrow morning, I'm taking these documents to her lawyer.””

For the first time, Vanessa didn't have a clever response.

She simply walked out.

Chloe remained beside the staircase, still wearing the stolen angel wings.

Then she looked at Maya.

“Can I talk to you?””

Maya nodded.

Chloe swallowed.

“There's something else Mom told me about Grandma's will.””

“What?””

Chloe looked toward the door through which Vanessa had disappeared.

“She said the original document wasn't the only thing she took.””

Maya frowned.

“What else?””

May you like

Chloe's voice dropped.

“The key to the second safe.””
