Chapter 8: The Secret Before My Birth

The woman’s name was Evelyn.

She arrived the next morning carrying a worn leather purse and a look of someone who had carried guilt for too long.

Dad invited her inside.

I sat beside him.

Mia sat across from us.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Evelyn opened her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

Vanessa.

Younger.

Standing beside another woman.

My father looked confused.

“Who is that?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“That is Vanessa’s sister.””

I frowned.

“I didn’t know she had one.””

“Most people don’t.””

Evelyn placed the photograph on the table.

“Because Vanessa erased that part of her life.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because her sister knew who she really was.””

The room became heavy.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Evelyn sighed.

“Vanessa was obsessed with control.””

Dad shook his head.

“I knew she was manipulative.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked directly at him.

“You knew she was difficult.””

A pause.

“You didn’t know she was dangerous.””

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“Before she met you, Vanessa had already destroyed another family.””

My skin went cold.

“What?””

“She became close to people. Learned their weaknesses. Then used them.””

Dad stared.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

That answer frightened me more than anything else.

Evelyn opened her purse again.

This time, she removed a small notebook.

“I kept records.””

Dad took it.

“What is this?””

“Things she said. Things she did.””

I looked at the pages.

Dates.

Names.

Notes.

And then I saw something.

My own name.

Written years ago.

My heart stopped.

“Why is my name here?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because Vanessa mentioned you before she married your father.””

Dad stood.

“What?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with regret.

“She knew about you before she met you.””

The room went silent.

“That’s impossible,” Dad whispered.

Evelyn shook her head.

“She researched your family.””

My fingers went numb.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at the notebook.

“Because she wanted your father.””

Dad looked sick.

“No.””

“She knew your wife had died. She knew you were raising a young daughter alone.””

Mia whispered:

“She planned it.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

For years, I thought Vanessa entered our lives by accident.

A woman who married my father.

A stepmother who slowly became cruel.

But maybe she had chosen us.

From the beginning.

Dad looked at me.

His face was filled with horror.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because this was bigger than the dress.

Bigger than the necklace.

Bigger than the money.

Vanessa hadn’t just hurt me.

She had entered my life knowing exactly where I was vulnerable.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

There was a picture attached.

A picture of me as a child.

Standing outside my old house.

And underneath it were six words.

Your father still doesn’t know everything.

I looked at Dad.

He saw my face.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the message wasn’t the frightening part.

The frightening part was the timestamp.

May you like

It had been sent from inside our house.

Five minutes ago.
