Chapter 6: The Box Under the Floor

The documents were hidden in a place nobody would have searched.

Not a safe.

Not a closet.

Not a locked drawer.

They were beneath the floorboards in the attic.

I stood at the bottom of the stairs watching Dad pull down the old ladder.

For years, that attic had been forgotten.

A place full of boxes and memories nobody wanted to open.

“Who told you about this?”” I asked.

Dad looked uncomfortable.

“Mia.””

I froze.

“Mia?””

He nodded.

“She called me this morning.””

That surprised me.

Mia had barely spoken to either of us since she moved out.

“What did she say?””

Dad climbed the ladder.

“She said she wanted to fix one thing she broke.””

I followed him.

The attic smelled like dust and old wood.

Sunlight came through the small window, cutting through the air like thin golden lines.

Dad moved boxes aside.

Then he stopped.

“There.””

A loose floorboard.

My stomach tightened.

He removed it carefully.

Underneath was a small metal container.

Inside were papers.

A lot of papers.

Dad picked up the first envelope.

His hands started shaking.

“What is it?””

He opened it.

Then he went completely silent.

“Dad?””

He handed it to me.

The paper was old.

But the words were clear.

It was a letter from my mother.

Not the one she left for me.

Another one.

This one was addressed to my father.

David,

I know we don’t like talking about difficult things, but I need you to promise me something.

If anything happens to me, protect Aaliyah.

Not because she is weak.

Because she is too kind.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Dad turned away.

He was crying.

But there was more.

Insurance documents.

Financial records.

A trust.

My mother had created something for me before she died.

A small account.

Not millions.

Not anything dramatic.

Just enough money to help with college.

Enough to give me a chance.

The account had been emptied years ago.

Dad looked confused.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

I looked at the papers.

“Who accessed it?””

He checked the signature.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

I grabbed the document.

The authorization signature belonged to Vanessa.

But underneath it was another signature.

Mia’s.

My stomach dropped.

“She signed?””

Dad looked devastated.

“She was fifteen.””

I stared at the paper.

Fifteen.

Old enough to understand something was wrong.

Young enough to be manipulated.

That night, Mia came over.

She stood outside the door looking smaller than I remembered.

Not weak.

Just ashamed.

Dad opened the door.

“Mia.””

She looked at him.

“I know you found it.””

Nobody moved.

Finally, I spoke.

“You signed.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

“Why?””

She looked at the ground.

“Because Vanessa told me it was temporary.””

I laughed.

“Temporary?””

“She said Dad would never know. She said she needed the money because she was struggling.””

Dad stared at her.

“And you believed her?””

Mia started crying.

“I was stupid.””

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“You were selfish.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

No excuses.

No anger.

Just acceptance.

Mia sat down.

“She told me your mother left you because she knew you would always be special.””

My chest tightened.

“She said if I didn’t compete with you, I would disappear.””

Dad looked away.

“I failed both of you.””

Mia wiped her face.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You failed Aaliyah.””

The honesty of that sentence shocked me.

Because Mia finally understood.

The next morning, Dad received another call.

This time, it wasn’t from a lawyer.

It was from the bank.

They had reviewed the documents.

And they found something.

Something that proved Vanessa’s story wasn’t just cruel.

It was planned.
