Chapter 3: The Hidden Messages

Dad didn’t show me the messages immediately.

That hurt.

At first, I thought he was protecting Mia again.

I almost walked away.

But then I saw his face.

He wasn’t protecting anyone.

He looked broken.

“Aaliyah,” he said.

“What?””

“I need you to sit down.””

I hated those words.

Nothing good ever followed them.

I sat at the kitchen table.

Dad placed his phone in front of me.

On the screen was a conversation.

Mia:

She thinks she’s better than me.

Vanessa:

Don’t worry. Your father will always feel guilty about her.

I stopped reading.

My chest tightened.

Dad whispered, “Keep going.””

I didn’t want to.

But I did.

Mia:

I hate how everyone treats her like she’s special.

Vanessa:

Your father’s weakness is feeling sorry for her.

Then another message.

Mia:

What if she finds out?

Vanessa:

She won’t. She’s too trusting.

I put the phone down.

I couldn’t feel my hands.

“What is this?””

Dad sat across from me.

“I found it last night.””

“How?””

“She left her account open.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Mia was upstairs.

Sleeping.

Like she hadn’t destroyed my entire world.

“I don’t understand.””

Dad looked miserable.

“I think Vanessa encouraged this.””

The words felt impossible.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Because accepting that meant admitting something worse.

That I wasn’t imagining it.

That every time I felt something was wrong, I was right.

That I spent years blaming myself.

Dad reached for my hand.

“I should have protected you.””

I pulled away.

“I needed you before.””

“I know.””

“No, Dad. You don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“I needed you when I was twelve and my mother’s necklace disappeared.””

His face changed.

“What necklace?””

I laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.””

That afternoon, Dad confronted Vanessa.

I stood in the hallway listening.

“You knew?””

Vanessa’s voice was cold.

“About what?””

“Everything.””

A pause.

Then:

“She needed to learn.””

My stomach dropped.

Dad sounded shocked.

“She’s your daughter.””

“So is Mia.””

“And?””

“And you always loved Aaliyah more.””

I covered my mouth.

Dad went silent.

Then Vanessa continued.

“You don’t see it. You never have. Every time you look at Aaliyah, you see her mother.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Her voice became sharper.

“And Mia sees it too.””

Dad whispered:

“She’s a child.””

“She’s eighteen.””

“She was a child when this started.””

No one spoke.

Then I heard something fall.

Dad’s voice became dangerous.

“What else?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“What else did you do?””

I stepped closer.

Then I heard the sentence that changed everything.

“We made sure she wouldn’t forget her place.””

My heart stopped.

Dad opened the door.

He saw me.

His face fell.

“Aaliyah…”

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Mia appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face was pale.

Because she knew.

And she knew I had heard.

“Mia,” Dad said.

She slowly walked down.

“I didn’t mean for you to find out.””

My stomach twisted.

“Find out what?””

Mia looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“The reason your mother’s things disappeared.””
