Chapter 2: The Things Nobody Saw

The graduation ceremony was the strangest moment of my life.

I walked across the stage wearing a borrowed dress from a friend.

Everyone clapped.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone thought I was happy.

Nobody knew I had spent the morning holding pieces of a dress I would never wear.

Dad sat in the front row.

He never looked away from me.

After the ceremony, he hugged me so tightly that my cap almost fell off.

“You did it,” he whispered.

I wanted to cry.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was angry.

“Why now?”” I asked.

Dad pulled back.

“What?””

“Why did you finally defend me now?””

His face changed.

The question hurt him.

Good.

Maybe it was supposed to.

For years, I had needed him.

When Mia mocked my grades.

When she borrowed my clothes and returned them stained.

When she told everyone at dinner that my mother would have been disappointed in me for being “too emotional.””

Every time, Dad said the same thing.

“Don’t let her bother you.””

“Be the bigger person.””

“She’s your sister.””

But today?

Today he destroyed a three-thousand-dollar bag.

Today he finally cared.

“I was wrong,” he said.

The simplicity of his answer shocked me.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just wrong.

That night, I sat on my bed staring at the ruined dress.

Dad knocked.

“Can I come in?””

I nodded.

He sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Mia wasn’t always like this.””

I looked at him.

“Dad.””

“I know.””

He sighed.

“She changed after her mother left.””

Vanessa.

I had never called her my mother.

She married Dad when I was ten.

At first, she was kind.

She helped me with homework. She made pancakes on Sundays.

Then Mia was born.

And somehow, everything changed.

Not immediately.

Slowly.

So slowly that I questioned myself.

Dad looked down.

“I thought you two were just having normal sister problems.””

“She cut my dress.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You know what happened today. You don’t know what happened before.””

His eyes lifted.

“Tell me.””

And for the first time, I did.

I told him about my missing jewelry.

My ruined school projects.

The photos of my mother that disappeared.

The comments Mia made whenever Dad praised me.

“She told me I was only special because Mom died.””

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

I looked away.

“She said everyone felt sorry for me.””

His jaw tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I laughed softly.

“Because every time I tried, you told me not to make problems.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Dad covered his face with his hands.

“I did that?””

“Yes.””

He looked older suddenly.

“I thought I was keeping peace.””

“You were keeping me quiet.””

He had no answer.

A knock interrupted us.

Vanessa stood outside.

“We need to talk.””

Dad stood.

“No.””

Her eyebrows lifted.

“No?””

“Not tonight.””

“You embarrassed Mia.””

Dad stared at her.

“She destroyed Aaliyah’s dress.””

“It was a mistake.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“It wasn’t.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re choosing a piece of fabric over your own daughter?””

Dad looked at me.

Then at her.

“I’m choosing the daughter who has spent years pretending she was okay.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Because something had shifted.

Dad was finally looking.

And once he started looking, he began finding things.

The next morning, he opened the family computer.

Then he found something.

Something Mia thought nobody would ever see.

A folder.

With my name on it.

And inside were dozens of screenshots.

Messages about me.

But one message made my father stop breathing.

May you like

Because it wasn’t from Mia.

It was from Vanessa.
