Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Smile

I didn’t speak.

Neither did Ethan.

The silence on the phone felt heavier than any confession.

Finally, I whispered:

“You were there?””

Ethan exhaled.

“Yes.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You watched him record that?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

His voice cracked.

“I helped him.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was watching my face carefully.

I walked into the kitchen, away from Zola.

“Ethan, you have five seconds before I hang up.””

“Emily, please.””

“Five.””

“I know you think I betrayed him.””

“Four.””

“I didn’t.””

“Three.””

“Daniel was trying to protect you.””

“Two.””

“He knew someone was stealing from the company.””

“One.””

“He knew it was our father.””

I stopped.

The kitchen became completely silent.

“My father?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Yes.””

I sat down.

Because somehow, every answer created a bigger question.

Daniel’s parents had died years earlier.

Except his father wasn’t dead.

He had walked out of Daniel’s life when Daniel was sixteen.

A man Daniel rarely mentioned.

A man I had only met once.

“Your father is alive?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

“Where is he?””

“Emily…”

“Where?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.””

“I’m done understanding.””

My voice shook.

“My husband died. My daughter lost her father. I spent three years believing one story.””

I looked toward the living room.

At Zola sitting on the floor with her drawings.

“And now every person connected to Daniel has a different version.””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he said:

“I know.””

For a moment, I heard something unexpected.

Pain.

Not manipulation.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Daniel was going to expose him,” Ethan said.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he found out what he had done.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did he do?””

A long pause.

Then:

“He caused the accident.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“Emily, listen to me. Daniel didn’t know at first. He thought it was just a drunk driver.””

I remembered the funeral.

The flowers.

The police report.

The closed casket.

“He found out later.””

“How?””

“Because my father confessed.””

I stood.

“Why would he confess?””

Ethan’s voice became barely audible.

“Because he thought Daniel would stay quiet.””

I felt sick.

“And Daniel didn’t.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Because that was Daniel.

Stubborn.

Protective.

Always trying to fix things.

“What happened the night Daniel died?”” I asked.

Ethan was silent.

Then:

“Daniel called me.””

My breath caught.

“You talked to him?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night he died.””

I gripped the counter.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“My father.””

The honesty shocked me.

Ethan continued.

“He threatened Daniel. He threatened me. He said if either of us went to the police, he would destroy everything.””

I looked at the recording device.

“But Daniel made this.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because after Daniel died, I thought my father had won.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“I was wrong.””

The line went quiet.

Then Ethan said:

“Emily, you need to leave your house.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Now.””

“Why?””

“Because if someone knew about the recording…”

A sound came from behind me.

A soft click.

My front door.

I turned slowly.

The lock had moved.

Someone was inside.

My heart stopped.

“Ethan…”

His voice changed instantly.

“Are you alone?””

I couldn’t answer.

The hallway light flickered.

Zola’s voice came from the living room.

“Mommy?””

I froze.

Because a man stepped out from the shadows.

And he wasn’t Ethan.

He was holding the purple apron from Marcus’s truck.

And he said:

“Daniel should have destroyed that recording when I asked him to.””
