Chapter 10: The Secret My Mother Buried
For a moment, I couldn’t recognize the person standing in my hallway.
Not because I didn’t know the face.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
My aunt Rachel stood beneath the flickering hallway light, holding an old leather bag against her chest.
My mother’s sister.
The woman who helped raise me after my mother died.
The woman who held my hand at my wedding.
The woman who sat beside me when Daniel’s coffin was lowered into the ground.
My family.
My safe place.
And now she was standing inside my house at midnight.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered again.
I stepped in front of Zola.
“No.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emily, please.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say please.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Who are you talking about?””
I didn’t take my eyes off Rachel.
“My aunt.””
Rachel looked at Marcus.
“You’re Marcus.””
He stiffened.
“You know me?””
She nodded slowly.
“I know everyone Daniel trusted.””
The sentence made my stomach twist.
“How?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because your mother asked me to watch.””
I felt anger rising.
“Watch what?””
“You.””
I laughed once.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because nothing made sense anymore.
“So my entire life, everyone has been watching me?””
“No.””
Rachel stepped forward.
I immediately raised my hand.
“Stay there.””
She stopped.
“I understand why you’re angry.””
“You don’t.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“My husband died. My mother died. Everyone kept secrets. Everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Rachel looked devastated.
“Your mother thought she was protecting you.””
“Everyone says that.””
I pointed toward the table.
“At some point, protecting me became lying to me.””
Silence.
Zola held onto my shirt.
“Mommy, who is she?””
Rachel looked at her.
And the sadness on her face almost broke me.
“I’m your great-aunt.””
Zola frowned.
“Why are you making Mommy upset?””
Rachel looked away.
Because she knew.
Children always saw the truth before adults admitted it.
I picked up the envelope Clara had given me.
“The bookstore.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“You found it.””
My heart dropped.
“You knew about it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She sat down slowly.
“Because I helped Daniel hide it.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“You?””
Rachel nodded.
“Your mother started investigating Richard Carter years ago.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because she found out Richard wasn’t just connected to Daniel’s problems.””
She paused.
“He was connected to your father’s death.””
The room went silent.
My father.
A man I barely remembered.
He died when I was young.
A car accident.
That was all I knew.
“Stop.””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“I wish I could.””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
“Your father was an accountant.””
“So?””
“He worked for Richard.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“He found something.””
“What?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Money laundering.””
Marcus went quiet.
Rachel continued.
“Your father planned to report him.””
“And Richard killed him?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer angered me.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“But your mother believed Richard was responsible.””
I looked at the recording device.
Daniel’s voice.
The secrets.
The warnings.
“Why did Daniel know?””
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a photograph.
A younger Daniel.
My mother.
And my father.
Together.
I stared.
“What is this?””
“Daniel found your mother’s old files.””
My hands went cold.
“Why?””
“Because after your father died, your mother never stopped looking.””
Rachel placed the photo on the table.
“Daniel discovered that Richard had been connected to both families for decades.””
I whispered:
“So Daniel knew everything?””
Rachel nodded.
“Not everything.””
“What didn’t he know?””
She looked toward Zola.
“That someone close to you was helping Richard.””
The room became colder.
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Instead, she opened her leather bag.
Inside was a small recorder.
“I brought this because Daniel wanted you to hear it.””
My heartbeat changed.
“Another recording?””
Rachel nodded.
“He made it three days before he died.””
Marcus looked alarmed.
“Why didn’t you give it to her?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he said if Emily heard this before she was ready, she would go after the wrong person.””
My hands shook.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“Emily, if you’re hearing this, I need you to understand something.””
I closed my eyes.
“I lied to you.””
My breath caught.
Daniel continued.
“But not because I didn’t love you.””
The recording crackled.
“I lied because the person who betrayed us was someone you would never question.””
A pause.
Then his voice dropped.
“Someone you call family.””
The recording stopped.
And at that exact moment…
Rachel’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
“It’s him.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“The person Daniel was afraid of.””
She answered.
And the voice on the other end said:
“Rachel, you should have stayed quiet.””
Rachel whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Then the call ended.
Because someone had just sent her a photo.
May you like
A photo of Zola sleeping.
Taken inside our house.
