Chapter 12: The Last Conversation
I wanted to run.
Every instinct in my body told me to grab Zola and leave.
But my feet wouldn’t move.
Because the man standing outside my door wasn’t just a threat.
He was a memory.
A thousand small moments.
Birthday cards.
Medical appointments.
A familiar smile.
Someone I trusted because everyone told me he was trustworthy.
Marcus whispered:
“Don’t open it.””
I nodded.
Then Dr. Hayes knocked again.
“Emily, I know you’re inside.””
Zola held my hand.
“Who is that?””
I looked at her.
“No one you need to worry about.””
But my voice betrayed me.
Children always know.
Rachel stepped closer.
“We need to hear him.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He came here for a reason.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He came here because he’s dangerous.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Maybe.””
Then she looked at me.
“But we need answers.””
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
The lock held.
Dr. Hayes sighed outside.
“Emily, please.””
His voice was gentle.
That made it worse.
“I know you think I’m the enemy.””
I said nothing.
“But Daniel was wrong about me.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Don’t.””
I walked closer to the door.
Not opening it.
Just listening.
“Why were you in my house?””
Silence.
Then:
“I needed the recorder.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel recorded a conversation he shouldn’t have.””
“With who?””
Another pause.
“Me.””
I looked at Rachel.
She covered her mouth.
“You and Daniel?””
Dr. Hayes sighed.
“He came to me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew something was wrong.””
I gripped the edge of the door.
“What did he ask you?””
The answer came quietly.
“He asked me if his father was capable of murder.””
The words felt unreal.
“And what did you say?””
“I told him the truth.””
“What truth?””
Dr. Hayes’s voice became softer.
“I told him I was the one who helped cover it up.””
The house went silent.
Even Marcus stopped moving.
My hand went over my mouth.
“You’re admitting it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“You let my mother die.””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Zola buried her face against me.
I closed my eyes.
The pain was almost too much.
“Why would you do that?””
Dr. Hayes answered:
“Because Richard threatened my family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone has an excuse.””
“I know.””
“Everyone was protecting someone.””
“I know.””
“And nobody protected us.””
Silence.
Then Dr. Hayes said something I never expected.
“I did.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I protected you.””
My anger turned into confusion.
“What are you talking about?””
“Daniel discovered the truth. He wanted revenge.””
“That sounds like Daniel.””
“No.””
Dr. Hayes’s voice cracked.
“That’s what scared me.””
I listened.
“He didn’t want justice anymore. He wanted to destroy everyone involved, including himself.””
I looked at the recorder.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why didn’t he tell you?””
I had no answer.
Dr. Hayes continued.
“Because Daniel found out who ordered the accident.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Not Richard.””
My fingers went numb.
“Then who?””
Dr. Hayes whispered:
“The person who wanted Richard gone too.””
The pieces shifted again.
Someone above Richard.
Someone above everyone.
“Who?””
The answer came.
And it destroyed the last piece of my world.
“Your mother.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Emily…”
“No.””
Dr. Hayes continued.
“Your mother discovered everything. She planned to expose Richard. She also planned to expose someone else.””
“Who?””
He whispered:
“Daniel’s mother.””
I froze.
“My mother-in-law?””
“Yes.””
The name felt impossible.
A woman who had died years before.
A woman Daniel mourned.
A woman everyone described as kind.
Dr. Hayes spoke again.
“Your entire family was built on a lie.””
I looked at Zola.
At Marcus.
At Rachel.
At the door.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel’s old number.
The number that had been disconnected three years ago.
One sentence.
*Don’t believe him. I know who killed me.*
And below it…
A photograph.
A photograph of Daniel.
