Chapter 5: The Truth Daniel Recorded

Ethan didn’t follow us when we left the market.

That should have made me feel better.

It didn’t.

Because people who are innocent usually want answers.

They don’t stand there looking terrified because a secret has escaped.

The drive home was silent.

Zola sat in the back seat humming softly while holding the purple marker Marcus gave her.

I kept looking in the rearview mirror.

Not because I thought someone was following us.

Because I suddenly realized I had no idea who I could trust.

When we reached home, I locked the door behind us.

Then I locked it again.

Zola noticed.

“Mommy?””

I forced a smile.

“What?””

“Are we scared?””

The question hurt more than anything else.

Because children always notice the things adults try hardest to hide.

I knelt beside her.

“No, baby.””

She looked at me.

“You’re doing the face you do when you’re scared.””

I almost cried.

Instead, I hugged her.

“I’m just trying to figure something out.””

“About Daddy?””

I nodded.

She touched my cheek.

“I knew Daddy had secrets.””

I pulled back.

“What?””

She looked confused.

“He told me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Before he went away.””

I sat down slowly.

“What did he tell you?””

Zola looked toward her bedroom.

Then she ran inside.

A moment later, she returned carrying a small pink box.

My breath caught.

It was Daniel’s old memory box.

The one I thought was empty.

She placed it in my lap.

“Daddy said this was important.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were drawings.

Old movie tickets.

A hospital bracelet from when Zola was born.

And underneath everything…

A small key.

I picked it up.

“What is this?””

Zola shrugged.

“He said Mommy would know when she needed it.””

My heart broke.

Because Daniel had planned for something.

Something he never got to explain.

I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Daniel left Zola a key.””

Silence.

Then:

“Where?””

I looked at the tiny metal key.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus breathed out.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“Daniel gave me a key too.””

I froze.

“To what?””

“I never knew.””

I stared at the key in my hand.

“Maybe we should find out.””

An hour later, Marcus arrived.

He looked exhausted.

But when he saw the key, his expression changed.

“I’ve seen this before.””

“Where?””

He walked closer.

“On Daniel’s old desk.””

I frowned.

“My house?””

Marcus nodded.

“He kept a locked drawer.””

I almost laughed.

“Daniel didn’t have a locked drawer.””

Marcus looked at me sadly.

“He did.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it reminded me how much of my husband existed outside the life I knew.

We searched the old desk in the garage.

The same desk Daniel used when he paid bills.

The same desk where he drank coffee every morning.

The same desk I almost donated after his death.

Marcus ran his hand underneath the bottom drawer.

“There.””

He pulled out a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal box.

The key fit perfectly.

I opened it.

There was no money.

No jewelry.

No documents.

Only a recording device.

And a note.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

*Emily, if you’re listening to this, I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you everything myself.*

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Daniel’s voice.

My husband’s voice.

The sound I hadn’t heard in three years.

“Emily…”

I covered my mouth.

Marcus looked away, giving me privacy.

Daniel continued.

“If you found this, it means something happened to me.””

My eyes filled.

“No.””

His voice cracked through the speaker.

“I need you to know one thing. Ethan didn’t plan to hurt me.””

I looked at Marcus.

Both of us froze.

Daniel continued.

“He was trying to warn me.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

Because everything I believed had just shifted again.

“Ethan made mistakes,” Daniel said.

“But he wasn’t the person behind it.””

A pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“The person who wanted me gone was someone you would never suspect.””

The recording crackled.

I leaned closer.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Emily… trust no one who says they loved me.””

The audio ended.

I stared at the device.

Marcus looked shaken.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the caller ID wasn’t unknown.

It was Ethan.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice came through immediately.

“Emily, don’t listen to the rest of that recording.””

My blood turned cold.

“How do you know there’s more?””

Silence.

May you like

Then Ethan whispered:

“Because I was there when Daniel made it.””
