Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Left a Message

Daniel spent the entire night trying to convince himself there was another explanation.

There had to be.

People made mistakes.

Dates could be wrong.

Memories could be damaged.

Grief could distort reality.

But the paper was real.

The handwriting was real.

And the date was impossible.

He sat at the kitchen table while Mia slept upstairs.

The drawing was in front of him.

A child’s picture.

A house.

A family.

A little girl holding another little girl’s hand.

Above them was a sentence.

“I’m still here.””

Daniel stared at it.

Again and again.

Claire sat across from him.

She looked like she had aged years in one night.

“I never saw that.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“That drawing.””

“You’re sure?””

Claire nodded.

“I thought everything from Emma was gone.””

Daniel frowned.

“Because she died.””

Claire looked away.

“Because my father told me she did.””

The sentence hung between them.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You’re saying you never saw her body?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“I was sedated.””

Daniel went quiet.

The hospital memory.

The grief.

The funeral.

All of it.

A story she had accepted because she had been too broken to question it.

A story someone else controlled.

“Evelyn knows,” Claire whispered.

Daniel stood.

“Then we talk to her.””

They found Evelyn at a small apartment twenty minutes away.

She opened the door before they knocked.

Like she had been expecting them.

When she saw Claire, her expression hardened.

“I wondered when you would finally tell him.””

Claire looked down.

“I didn’t know how.””

Evelyn stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The apartment was filled with old photographs.

Daniel noticed them immediately.

One picture caught his attention.

A little girl.

About two years old.

Standing beside Evelyn.

And smiling.

Emma.

Daniel touched the frame.

“That’s her.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire looked at the picture.

Her face collapsed.

“She looks exactly the same.””

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“She should.””

Claire looked confused.

“What?””

Evelyn stared at her daughter.

“Because she’s alive.””

The words destroyed the room.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Claire sat down.

“No.””

Evelyn walked to a cabinet.

She pulled out a folder.

“I spent six years trying to prove it.””

Daniel opened it.

Medical records.

Documents.

Photographs.

A hospital transfer form.

Everything.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“Wait.””

He looked closer.

“What is this?””

Evelyn sat beside him.

“The night Emma disappeared, Thomas bribed someone at the hospital.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“He moved her.””

“Where?””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“To a private facility.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“She was alive?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire started crying.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No, I held her.””

“You held a baby Thomas wanted you to believe was dead.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What happened after?””

Evelyn’s face darkened.

“Thomas took her.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

“Because he believed children belonged to families who deserved them.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked toward Claire.

“He believed Claire was unfit.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“So he stole her?””

“Yes.””

Claire shook her head.

“But why would he threaten me?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because he never stopped controlling you.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel asked:

“Where is Emma now?””

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation scared him.

“Evelyn.””

She looked down.

“She was found.””

Claire froze.

“Found?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But not by us.””

Daniel felt something wrong.

“Who found her?””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“Thomas.””

The answer made no sense.

“He had her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is she sending drawings?””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at the paper.

The impossible date.

The message.

The name.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Because Emma escaped.””

Claire stood.

“What?””

“She ran away from him.””

Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.

“Where is she?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“She’s been hiding.””

“From who?””

Evelyn’s eyes moved to Claire.

Then Daniel.

“From Thomas.””

The room went silent.

Then Claire whispered:

“How do you know?””

Evelyn reached into her bag.

She pulled out a phone.

“There is one message.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“I found Daddy’s new family.””

Claire’s face went white.

Daniel stared.

“When was this sent?””

Evelyn answered quietly:

“Yesterday.””

Daniel felt cold.

Yesterday.

While he was discovering the secrets.

While Claire was trying to explain the past.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been waiting.

Then another message appeared.

The phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn looked down.

A new message.

Only five words.

“Tell Daniel to ask Claire.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“What does that mean?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She was staring at the screen.

Because she knew.

And when she finally spoke…

May you like

her voice was almost a whisper.

“He knows about the night Mia was born.””
