Chapter 3: The Woman Outside

The woman standing outside looked like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

She was probably in her late fifties.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A worn brown coat.

But the moment Daniel opened the door, she didn’t look at him.

She looked past him.

Straight at Mia.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Oh my God.””

Mia stepped backward.

Daniel noticed.

The child knew her.

Or at least recognized her.

“Who are you?”” Daniel asked.

The woman swallowed.

“My name is Evelyn.””

Claire appeared behind him.

“Leave.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“After all these years, that’s all you have to say?””

Daniel turned slowly.

“All these years?””

Claire’s face went pale.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“She doesn’t want you to know because she knows what she did.””

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“What did she do?””

Claire shook her head.

“This woman is unstable.””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Still the same.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mia whispered.

“Grandma?””

The world stopped.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“What did you call her?””

Mia immediately covered her mouth.

Like she had made a mistake.

Evelyn cried.

“Yes.””

She looked at Mia.

“I’m your grandmother.””

Daniel felt dizzy.

He looked at Claire.

“You told me your mother died.””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You told me she died.””

Evelyn stepped inside slowly.

“She wanted everyone to believe that.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Evelyn looked at Mia.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“Sweetheart, why did you call her Grandma?””

Mia looked frightened.

“She came before.””

“When?””

“Sometimes.””

Daniel stared.

“How many times?””

The girl’s eyes filled with tears.

“Before Mommy found out.””

Claire looked at her.

“Mia.””

The child immediately went quiet.

Daniel saw it again.

That fear.

That obedience.

He turned away.

He couldn’t look at it anymore.

Evelyn reached into her bag.

“I brought something.””

Claire moved forward.

“No.””

But Evelyn pulled out an old photograph.

She handed it to Daniel.

He looked down.

And his breath disappeared.

It was a picture of Claire.

Holding a baby.

Standing beside Evelyn.

And written on the back was a date.

A date from six years ago.

The day Mia was born.

Daniel looked up.

“What is this?””

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“That is the last picture I have of my daughter before Claire took Mia away from me.””

Daniel stared at Claire.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“You told me you had no family.””

“I was protecting us.””

“From what?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Evelyn did.

“From the truth.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Daniel looked at the locked door down the hallway.

The door Mia had been afraid to talk about.

The door Claire had warned him not to open.

“What is inside that room?””

Claire’s eyes widened.

“Nothing.””

But Evelyn’s face changed.

She whispered:

“That’s where she kept everything.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Everything?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Letters. Photos. Records.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Evelyn looked directly at Daniel.

“Proof that your wife has been lying to you since the day you married her.””

Daniel walked toward the hallway.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Please.””

It was the first time she had begged.

Not commanded.

Not argued.

Begged.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why are you afraid of that door?””

Claire’s lips trembled.

For a moment, she looked less like an angry woman.

And more like someone trapped by something she had created.

Then she whispered:

“Because if you open it…”

She stopped.

Daniel waited.

“What?””

Claire looked at Mia.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at him.

“Because you’ll find out Mia isn’t the only child I lost.””

Daniel froze.

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

May you like

And behind the locked door…

something inside the house was waiting to be discovered.
