Chapter 6: The Recording

The next morning, Daniel drove Mia to his brother’s house.

He didn’t trust himself to stay in the same room with Claire.

Not yet.

Not after everything.

Not after learning his daughter had been carrying fear instead of childhood.

Mia sat quietly in the passenger seat.

Looking out the window.

Daniel kept glancing at her.

Waiting for her to say something.

Anything.

Finally, she whispered:

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“I’m upset.””

“Because she’s bad?””

The question hurt.

Because Mia wasn’t asking about Claire.

She was asking about herself.

Children always believed they were part of the problem.

Daniel shook his head.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then why?””

“Because adults are supposed to protect kids.””

Mia nodded slowly.

“She forgot.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“She told me she was protecting me.””

The words stayed with him.

Because that was the most dangerous part.

Claire didn’t believe she was hurting Mia.

She believed she was saving her.

And sometimes…

the most damaging people were the ones who thought they were doing the right thing.

When Daniel returned home that afternoon, Claire was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

“I know where you went.””

“Mia needed space.””

Claire nodded.

“I understand.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Understand.

That word felt strange coming from her.

“Where is the video?””

Claire looked away.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“I’m not asking again.””

For a moment, he thought she would deny it.

Instead, she walked to the hallway.

To the room.

The locked room.

She opened the door.

This time, without hesitation.

Inside, she went to a box hidden behind the shelf.

She pulled out a small camera.

Daniel stared.

“You recorded her?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what is this?””

Her hands trembled.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Claire looked at him.

“Of what happened the night my daughter died.””

Daniel froze.

She placed the camera on the table.

“I watched it once.””

Her voice broke.

“Only once.””

“Then why keep it?””

“Because I couldn’t throw away the truth.””

Daniel picked up the camera.

“Where is the recording?””

Claire pointed toward an old laptop.

He opened it.

One file.

One date.

Six years ago.

Daniel clicked.

The screen flickered.

A grainy image appeared.

A hospital room.

A younger Claire.

Holding a tiny baby.

Daniel watched silently.

Then he heard crying.

A baby crying.

His chest tightened.

Claire sat down.

“I need you to know something.””

He didn’t look away.

“What?””

“I didn’t hurt her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I never wanted her to die.””

The video continued.

A nurse entered.

Then left.

Claire sat beside the baby.

Crying.

Whispering.

Daniel turned up the volume.

At first, he couldn’t hear.

Then one sentence came through.

And he felt his entire body go cold.

Claire on the video whispered:

“I’m sorry, Emma.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Emma.

The name he had never heard.

Then another voice appeared.

A man’s voice.

Not Daniel’s.

Someone standing outside the hospital room.

Someone who should not have been there.

The camera angle shifted slightly.

And Daniel saw him.

A man.

Standing in the doorway.

Watching.

Claire’s face went pale.

Daniel turned slowly.

“Who is that?””

Claire didn’t answer.

The man on the video stepped closer.

And Daniel recognized him.

Because he had seen that face before.

In old family photos.

In Mia’s drawings.

Standing beside Claire.

Before Daniel existed.

Daniel whispered:

“Evelyn’s husband?””

Claire looked down.

“No.””

Her voice barely existed.

“He’s the reason I lost Emma.””

The video kept playing.

The man walked toward Claire.

And said something that made Daniel’s blood freeze.

Something that explained why Claire had spent years controlling Mia.

Why she had locked away the past.

Why she feared the truth coming out.

The man looked directly at Claire and said:

“If you tell anyone what happened tonight…”

The screen glitched.

The audio cut.

Then returned.

And the final words came through.

“You’ll lose your other daughter too.””

Daniel stared at the frozen screen.

His anger shifted.

Not disappeared.

Never disappeared.

But changed.

Because suddenly, there was another question.

A question bigger than Claire.

Bigger than the locked room.

May you like

Who was the man in the video?

And why was he still alive?
