Chapter 2: The Locked Door
Daniel did not sleep that night.
Not because of the argument.
Not because of Claire.
Because of the sound of his daughter crying quietly behind her bedroom door.
He sat on the edge of his bed at 2:13 in the morning, staring into the darkness.
Three weeks away.
That was all.
Three weeks.
How much could change in three weeks?
Apparently, enough for his daughter to stop running into his arms.
Enough for her to look at her mother before answering simple questions.
Enough for her to whisper, “I wasn’t supposed to tell.””
He looked across the room.
Claire was asleep.
Or pretending to be.
Daniel couldn’t tell anymore.
The next morning, he woke early.
He made pancakes.
The same ones he used to make every Sunday.
Chocolate chips.
Too much syrup.
The way Mia liked them.
When she walked into the kitchen, she stopped.
“You made breakfast?””
Daniel smiled.
“Of course.””
She sat down slowly.
“You’re not mad?””
His smile disappeared.
“Mad about what?””
Mia looked at her plate.
“Yesterday.””
Daniel pulled out the chair beside her.
“Sweetheart, you didn’t do anything wrong.””
She picked at the edge of her pancake.
“Mommy says I make things harder.””
His hand froze.
“What does that mean?””
Mia shrugged.
“She says if I listened better, people wouldn’t get upset.””
Daniel felt anger rise.
But he pushed it down.
He needed answers.
Not rage.
“Does Mommy say that a lot?””
Mia didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
Then Claire entered the kitchen.
She was dressed perfectly.
Hair done.
Coffee in hand.
Like nothing had happened.
“Good morning.””
Daniel looked at her.
“We need to talk.””
Claire sighed.
“I knew this was coming.””
“Mia told me about the room.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Daniel.””
“What is inside?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why is it locked?””
Claire placed her coffee down.
“Because it’s private.””
“Private from who?””
She looked at Mia.
Then back at him.
“From everyone.””
Daniel stood.
“That’s my daughter’s room. This is my house too.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Your house?””
The words surprised him.
She stepped closer.
“You were gone, Daniel.””
The room went quiet.
“I handled everything here. Every appointment. Every meal.
Every tantrum. Every difficult day.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And that gives you the right to scare her?””
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“I never scared her.””
“Mia is afraid of you.””
For the first time, Claire looked genuinely hurt.
“You think I’m a monster?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And that was worse.
Claire turned away.
“You have no idea what happened while you were gone.””
“Then tell me.””
She said nothing.
Daniel followed her gaze.
The locked door.
A few minutes later, he was standing in front of it.
Claire appeared behind him.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked back.
“Why?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Because some things are better left buried.””
That sentence confirmed everything.
Daniel grabbed the handle.
The door was locked.
He turned.
“Where is the key?””
Claire said nothing.
“Mia?””
The little girl was standing in the hallway.
She looked terrified.
Daniel immediately softened.
“It’s okay.””
Mia shook her head.
“No.””
“No?””
She whispered.
“Mommy said if Daddy opens it, everything will break.””
Claire looked at her.
“Mia.””
The child flinched.
Daniel saw it.
And that was the moment something inside him snapped.
He turned toward Claire.
“What did you tell her?””
Claire’s eyes filled with frustration.
“You’re twisting everything.””
“No. I’m finally seeing everything.””
The argument was interrupted by a sound from outside.
A car door closing.
Daniel looked toward the front window.
A woman was standing outside.
Older.
Holding an envelope.
She stared directly at the house.
Then at the locked door.
Claire’s face changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Panic.
The woman knocked.
Once.
Twice.
Claire whispered:
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Who is that?””
The woman knocked again.
Then she called through the door.
“Claire, I know Daniel is home.””
Daniel felt a chill.
The woman continued.
“And he deserves to know what really happened to his daughter.””
Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Don’t open that door.””
But Daniel was already walking toward it.
Because after everything he had seen…
he knew one thing.
May you like
Someone had been hiding the truth from him.
And that someone was not just Claire.
