Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Door
David ran.
He didn’t remember leaving the room.
He didn’t remember pushing past the detective.
He only remembered one thing.
Ethan was alone.
And someone was inside his house.
The drive back felt endless.
Every red light.
Every second.
Every breath.
It all felt like a punishment.
When David finally reached the house, the front door was open.
The same way Michael’s had been.
A warning.
Not an accident.
He stepped inside slowly.
“Ethan?””
No answer.
The living room was dark.
The security monitor was still frozen on the final image.
Ethan standing near the couch.
A shadow behind him.
David’s heart pounded.
“Ethan!””
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
David ran toward the staircase.
“Dad?””
He stopped.
That voice.
Ethan.
Coming from his bedroom.
David rushed inside.
The room was empty.
Except for Ethan.
He was sitting on the floor beside his bed.
Crying.
David dropped down beside him.
“Are you hurt?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
“Where is he?””
Ethan looked confused.
“Who?””
“The person who was here.””
The boy wiped his eyes.
“Nobody was here.””
David froze.
“What?””
Ethan pointed toward the desk.
“There was just a letter.””
David looked.
A white envelope sat on the table.
His name was written across it.
David opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was one sentence.
*You were always looking in the wrong place.*
Then another piece of paper fell out.
A photograph.
David picked it up.
His blood went cold.
It showed Ethan sleeping.
Taken that night.
Inside his own bedroom.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been close.
Too close.
David immediately called the police.
While they searched the house, Rosa stayed beside Ethan.
David stood in the hallway, staring at the walls.
The place where his family had built memories.
The place where his son had been afraid.
He suddenly realized something.
Vanessa had not been the only person hiding.
She had been a distraction.
A loud one.
A painful one.
But still a distraction.
The real plan had been happening quietly.
The detective returned from upstairs.
“We found something.””
David turned.
“What?””
The detective held up a small device.
“A hidden camera.””
David stared.
“Where?””
“In Ethan’s room.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
David closed his eyes.
Someone had invaded the one place his son should have felt safe.
“Can you trace it?””
“We’re trying.””
A few minutes later, another officer entered.
“We have a name.””
Everyone turned.
The officer looked at David.
“The device was registered under an old account.””
“Whose?””
The officer hesitated.
Then answered.
“Your father’s company.””
David felt numb.
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then who has access?””
The officer looked down at the tablet.
“There’s one active user.””
David stepped closer.
“Who?””
The officer turned the screen.
A name appeared.
David stopped breathing.
Because he knew it.
Not from his past.
Not from old family records.
From every single day of his life.
The account belonged to:
Rosa.
David stared at her.
The woman who had protected Ethan.
The woman who had helped expose Vanessa.
The woman who had stood beside his family for years.
Rosa looked at the screen.
Then slowly sat down.
“I knew this day would come.””
David’s voice was barely controlled.
“Explain.””
The detective moved closer.
“Mrs. Rosa, you need to answer.””
Rosa looked at Ethan.
Then back at David.
“I never wanted him involved.””
David’s jaw tightened.
“You were spying on my son?””
“No.””
“Then why is your name on that account?””
Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was trying to protect him.””
David shook his head.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words hurt her.
But she nodded.
“You’re right.””
She reached into her bag.
Then placed an old phone on the table.
“I should have told you years ago.””
David looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Your father’s phone.””
Everyone went silent.
The detective picked it up carefully.
“Where did you get this?””
Rosa looked down.
“From Maria.””
David stepped forward.
“Maria gave it to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew she wouldn’t survive.””
The room became silent.
Rosa continued.
“Maria found out your father planned to take Ethan away. But she also discovered something worse.””
David waited.
“He had someone inside the house.””
David looked at Rosa.
“You?””
Rosa nodded.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“No.””
“I was placed there before Maria died.””
David stared.
“You worked for him?””
Rosa shook her head.
“No.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I worked against him.””
She explained everything.
Years earlier, Rosa had discovered what David’s father was doing.
The financial crimes.
The manipulation.
The hidden families.
She had tried to expose him.
But he found out.
So Maria made a plan.
Rosa would stay close.
Watch.
Collect evidence.
Protect Ethan.
“And Vanessa?”” David asked.
Rosa looked at the floor.
“Vanessa was sent to replace me.””
David frowned.
“What?””
“Your father trusted her more. She was willing to do things I couldn’t.””
David remembered the bowl.
The stick.
Ethan’s fear.
His hands curled into fists.
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
Rosa broke.
“Because I was gathering enough evidence to destroy them both.””
David looked at her.
“You let my son suffer.””
Rosa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The detective interrupted.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He held the old phone.
“There are files here.””
He pressed the screen.
A video appeared.
An older man sat in a chair.
David’s father.
Alive.
Speaking directly to the camera.
“If you are watching this, then my plan failed.””
David couldn’t move.
His father continued.
“David always believed he was the better son.””
A cold smile.
“But he was always emotional. Always weak.””
David felt sick.
The video continued.
“Ethan is the key. Whoever controls him controls everything.””
Rosa whispered:
“Oh no.””
The video ended.
Then one final file appeared.
A location.
And a date.
The date was tomorrow.
The location was the old Carter estate.
May you like
The house where David grew up.
The place where everything began.
