Chapter 6: The Brother He Buried

David had spent years telling himself his past was behind him.

He was wrong.

The past had been waiting.

His brother Michael had disappeared fifteen years earlier.

Not physically.

Not officially.

But emotionally.

After their father died, the two brothers had fought over the family company.

Michael believed David had stolen everything from him.

David believed Michael had betrayed their father’s trust.

They stopped speaking.

Then Michael moved away.

No calls.

No messages.

Nothing.

Until now.

David stared at the name on his phone.

Michael.

The person he had spent years trying to forget.

The next morning, David drove to an old address he found through his attorney.

He didn’t tell Ethan.

He didn’t tell Rosa.

Some secrets were too dangerous to carry around children.

The house was small.

Old.

Forgotten.

David knocked.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Michael.

His brother smiled faintly.

“I wondered how long it would take.””

David’s jaw tightened.

“You knew?””

Michael stepped aside.

“Come in.””

David didn’t move.

“Start talking.””

Michael looked at him.

“You always were impatient.””

“And you always avoided the truth.””

The smile disappeared.

Michael stepped back.

“Fine.””

David entered.

The house smelled like old books and coffee.

On the table were photographs.

Dozens of them.

David noticed one immediately.

Ethan.

A baby.

Held by Michael.

His blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Michael didn’t answer.

David grabbed the photograph.

“You were near my son?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked away.

“Because I was trying to protect him.””

David laughed bitterly.

“Protect him?””

He threw the photograph onto the table.

“You disappeared.””

“I had to.””

“Maria died.””

Michael’s face changed.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

David stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because if I came back, they would know I had the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Michael opened a drawer.

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Birth records.

Court papers.

David scanned them.

Then stopped.

A name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa.

His stomach dropped.

“She was involved?””

Michael nodded.

“She wasn’t your enemy at first.””

David looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“She worked for someone else.””

“Who?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“Our father.””

David felt the room spin.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael shook his head.

“You never knew the truth about him.””

David remembered his father.

A respected businessman.

A strict man.

A man everyone admired.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Michael opened another document.

“This was found after his death.””

David read it.

A hidden financial agreement.

Payments.

Transfers.

A plan.

His father had been moving money secretly for years.

“Why?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because Ethan wasn’t just your son.””

David stared.

“What does that mean?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“Maria discovered something before she died.””

David waited.

“She discovered your father had been hiding a child.””

The silence was unbearable.

David shook his head.

“No.””

Michael looked directly at him.

“Ethan had a half-brother.””

David stepped back.

“What?””

“Your father had another family.””

David couldn’t breathe.

“And Vanessa?””

“She was connected to that family.””

The pieces started moving.

The hidden photographs.

The threats.

The obsession with Ethan.

David whispered:

“She wanted his inheritance.””

Michael nodded.

“But not only that.””

“What else?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“She wanted revenge.””

That night, David returned home with more questions than answers.

Ethan was waiting.

“Dad?””

David forced a smile.

“Hey.””

“You look sad.””

David sat beside him.

“Sometimes adults make mistakes.””

Ethan nodded.

“Like Vanessa?””

David paused.

“Yes.””

The boy looked down.

“Is she coming back?””

“No.””

“Good.””

David looked at him.

“Ethan.””

“Yeah?””

“If someone tells you something about your family…”

The boy looked up.

“Should I believe them?””

David didn’t know how to answer.

Because suddenly, he wasn’t sure what the truth was anymore.

His phone rang.

Michael.

David answered.

“What happened?””

Michael’s voice was urgent.

“She found me.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa.””

David stood.

“What?””

“She knows I have the documents.””

A crash sounded through the phone.

Michael gasped.

Then the call went dead.

David stared at the screen.

And then his home security system sent another alert.

Motion detected.

May you like

Front door.

Someone was standing outside.
