Chapter 2: The Things Ethan Never Said

The drive home felt longer than any journey my father had ever taken.

He ignored red lights.

He ignored phone calls.

He ignored everything except the image burned into his mind.

His son on the floor.

His wife holding a weapon.

And the terrifying realization that Ethan had been suffering right under his roof.

When David finally arrived, he didn’t enter through the front door.

He used his key quietly.

Rosa was waiting in the hallway.

Her face was pale.

“Where is he?”” David asked.

“In his room.””

“Vanessa?””

Rosa glanced toward the living room.

“She went upstairs after you called the house. She doesn’t know you saw.””

David looked at the staircase.

For a second, anger took over.

He wanted to run upstairs.

He wanted answers.

He wanted Vanessa to feel even a fraction of the fear Ethan had felt.

But then he heard something.

A small sound.

A child trying not to cry.

David walked to Ethan’s room.

He opened the door slowly.

“Ethan?””

The little boy was sitting on his bed.

His knees were pulled to his chest.

When he saw his father, his expression changed.

Not relief.

Fear.

That broke David’s heart.

“Dad?””

David rushed forward.

“I’m here.””

Ethan looked toward the hallway.

“Is she mad?””

David froze.

“What?””

“Is Vanessa mad because I told you?””

David sat beside him.

“Ethan, you didn’t do anything wrong.””

The boy stared at his hands.

“I’m not supposed to tell.””

“Who told you that?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

David swallowed.

“Buddy, look at me.””

Slowly, Ethan lifted his eyes.

“Did she hurt you before?””

The silence was the answer.

David’s voice became softer.

“How many times?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

David closed his eyes.

Behind him, Rosa stood in the doorway.

She quietly wiped her face.

“She always made sure nobody saw,” Rosa said.

David turned.

“What do you mean?””

Rosa stepped inside.

“She would send me away from the room. She would say Ethan needed discipline.””

David looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rosa’s expression broke.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Three months ago. I told you Ethan was scared of her.””

David remembered.

He remembered Vanessa laughing.

“She said Rosa was too old-fashioned. That you were imagining problems.””

His stomach dropped.

Because that was true.

Vanessa had always been convincing.

She cried when he questioned her.

She apologized.

She promised.

And every time, he believed her.

A floorboard creaked.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood in the hallway.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

“What’s going on?””

David looked at her.

For the first time since their marriage, he didn’t see the woman he loved.

He saw a stranger.

“Why did you unplug the camera?””

The color drained from her face.

Only for a second.

Then she smiled.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“David, are you seriously accusing me because of a camera glitch?””

Rosa stepped forward.

“It wasn’t a glitch.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You.””

The word was full of hatred.

Rosa didn’t move.

“I saw what you did.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You saw nothing.””

“I saw Ethan.””

“You don’t know what happened.””

David held up his phone.

“I know exactly what happened.””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Her confidence disappeared.

“You recorded me?””

“No,” David said.

“I watched you.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s mouth opened slightly.

Then she whispered:

“You were watching?””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Panic.

Because she finally understood.

She had not been invisible.

David stepped closer.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Why what?””

“Why would you do this to an eight-year-old child?””

“He’s not innocent.””

David stared at her.

“He’s eight.””

“He manipulates people.””

The words were so cold that even Vanessa seemed surprised she had said them.

David shook his head.

“You’re blaming a child for your cruelty.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You have no idea what he’s like when you’re not around.””

Ethan appeared behind David.

His voice was tiny.

“Dad…”

David turned.

“What is it?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Then back at his father.

“There’s something else.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan, don’t.””

David noticed.

The fear in Ethan’s face.

The warning in Vanessa’s voice.

“Ethan,” David said gently, “tell me.””

The boy swallowed.

“She said if I ever told you…”

He stopped.

David crouched down.

“What?””

Ethan whispered:

“She said she would make sure nobody believed me.””

Vanessa’s face went still.

David stood.

And before anyone could speak, his phone buzzed.

A notification appeared.

A message from the security system.

A new recording had been saved.

David opened it.

The video title made his blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t from tonight.

It was from four months earlier.

And the person in the recording was not Vanessa.

It was someone else.
