Chapter 4: The Woman Who Planned Everything
David spent the next twenty-four hours learning things he wished he had never discovered.
Vanessa’s past was full of carefully hidden pieces.
Pieces that only connected after everything fell apart.
Her previous marriage had ended suddenly.
Her former husband had lost his company.
Money disappeared.
Accounts were emptied.
And then Vanessa vanished.
David’s attorney placed a file on the desk.
“We found unusual activity before your marriage.””
David opened it.
Bank transfers.
Fake names.
Connections.
His stomach tightened.
“She targeted me.””
The attorney nodded.
“It appears so.””
Across the table, David’s hands clenched.
“But why Ethan?””
The attorney hesitated.
“Because children complicate things.””
David looked up.
“What does that mean?””
“If something happened to you, custody and inheritance would become complicated. Ethan is your legal heir.””
The room went silent.
David looked toward the window.
For years, he thought Vanessa wanted a family.
A home.
Love.
But maybe she wanted something else.
That evening, David returned home.
Ethan was sitting with Rosa in the kitchen.
For the first time in weeks, he was laughing.
A real laugh.
David stood there quietly.
Because he realized something.
Vanessa had not just hurt Ethan.
She had stolen moments from him.
Birthday mornings.
Movie nights.
Simple conversations.
She had taken a child’s feeling of safety and replaced it with fear.
“Dad?””
David smiled.
“Hey, buddy.””
Ethan looked toward the door.
“Is she coming back?””
David sat beside him.
“I don’t know.””
The boy looked down.
“I hope not.””
David nodded.
“I understand.””
That night, the police arrived.
They had found Vanessa.
But she wasn’t alone.
She had gone to someone who could help her.
Someone who knew how to manipulate the truth.
Her lawyer.
When David entered the station, Vanessa was sitting across from him.
She looked completely different.
No fear.
No sadness.
Only confidence.
“You really think you won?”” she asked.
David sat down.
“You hurt a child.””
Vanessa leaned back.
“You have recordings.””
“Yes.””
“But you don’t understand something.””
David frowned.
“What?””
She smiled.
“You only have pieces.””
The detective beside David looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa folded her hands.
“Ethan is not the victim you think he is.””
David stared.
“What?””
She looked directly at him.
“You will find out soon.””
David stood.
“I know exactly who you are.””
Vanessa smiled.
“No.””
She leaned closer.
“You know who I wanted you to see.””
The detective’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he looked at David.
“Mr. Carter…”
David felt something cold move through him.
“What happened?””
The detective lowered the phone.
“We received a new piece of evidence.””
David frowned.
“From who?””
The detective looked at the screen.
Then back at him.
“It was anonymously submitted.””
David’s heart started pounding.
“What evidence?””
The detective turned the phone around.
A photograph was displayed.
A photograph taken inside David’s house.
A photograph of Ethan.
But the date on it was from before Vanessa ever moved in.
