Chapter 9: The Sister Nobody Knew Existed
Elena stared at the photograph.
She forgot how to breathe.
The image was old.
The colors were faded.
But there was no mistaking the woman standing in front of the building.
Her mother.
Amelia.
Alive.
Holding a baby.
Not Elena.
A second child.
For years, Elena had carried only fragments of her mother.
A soft voice.
A familiar perfume.
The feeling of being held when storms frightened her as a little girl.
Memories were all she had.
Because everyone told her the same story.
Her mother was gone.
Her family was gone.
Her past was simple.
But it had never been simple.
It had been buried.
“Elena?””
Grant’s voice sounded distant.
She looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching her.
“What happened?””
She turned the phone around.
Nobody spoke.
Then Natalie stepped closer.
Her face changed the moment she saw the image.
“No.””
The word was almost inaudible.
Elena noticed.
“You know.””
Natalie looked away.
“You know who that is.””
Natalie swallowed.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
“You thought what?””
Natalie looked at the photograph again.
“I thought she was gone.””
The room became colder.
Celeste frowned.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Elena looked at Natalie.
“Tell me.””
Natalie closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Her name was Sophia.””
Elena felt a strange emptiness.
“Sophia?””
Natalie nodded.
“Your sister.””
The words landed harder than anything else that night.
Your sister.
Elena looked down at Lily.
A child who had changed everything.
A child who had exposed every lie.
And now she was learning she had spent her entire life without knowing she had a sister.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“My mother only had me.””
Natalie looked at her.
“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””
Elena turned toward Richard.
The anger came back.
“You knew.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew I had a sister.””
His silence was an answer.
Elena took a step back.
“How many things did you take from me?””
Richard’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because he knew she was asking a question he could never answer.
Celeste stared at her father.
“How could you hide something like that?””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Because it was necessary.””
Celeste shook her head.
“I hate that word.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“Necessary.””
Her eyes filled.
“Everyone uses it when they want permission to hurt someone.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Elena looked back at the photograph.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
“She was moved.””
Elena turned.
“Moved where?””
Thomas hesitated.
“That is what Amelia was trying to prevent.””
Her heart started pounding.
“What happened to my sister?””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“We don’t know.””
A terrible silence followed.
“You don’t know?””
Thomas nodded.
“After Amelia disappeared, Sophia disappeared too.””
Elena closed her eyes.
Another person erased.
Another life taken by secrets.
Grant stepped beside her.
Not touching.
Just standing there.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at him.
For a moment, she wanted to be angry.
She was still angry.
But she also saw something different.
He looked broken too.
Because he was finally understanding the size of what his family had done.
Elena looked at Vivian.
“Did you know?””
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Elena almost laughed.
“You knew about my sister too?””
Vivian nodded slowly.
“I knew Sophia existed.””
“And?””
“I tried to find her.””
Elena stared.
“Tried?””
Vivian looked ashamed.
“I failed.””
That word surprised Elena.
Because Vivian Harrington was not a woman who admitted failure.
Not publicly.
Not ever.
“What happened?””
Vivian looked at Richard.
And Elena noticed.
The hesitation.
The fear.
“Richard made the decision.””
Everyone turned.
Richard’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
Vivian ignored him.
“He believed separating the children would protect the family.””
Elena’s anger exploded.
“Protect the family?””
Her voice echoed through the ballroom.
“She was a baby.””
Richard looked at her.
“You don’t understand the danger.””
“No.””
Elena stepped forward.
“I understand exactly.””
She pointed toward Lily.
“You looked at children and saw problems.””
The words hit everyone.
“You looked at me and my sister and decided we were things to control.””
Richard said nothing.
Because there was no defense.
Then Grant’s phone rang.
Everyone turned.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Elena watched him.
“What is it?””
Grant didn’t answer.
He walked away a few steps.
Then returned.
“My father’s lawyer.””
Thomas immediately looked concerned.
“What did he say?””
Grant stared at the phone.
“He said my father left instructions.””
“For what?””
Grant looked at Elena.
“To reveal the truth if the documents were ever exposed.””
Nobody moved.
“Play it.””
Grant hesitated.
Then pressed the message.
An old recording filled the room.
A man’s voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
Grant’s father.
“If you are hearing this, it means the agreement failed.””
Everyone listened.
“My family and the Harrington family attempted to contain the situation.””
Elena felt sick.
Situation.
That was how they described people.
Lives.
Children.
“Amelia Harrington was not the threat.””
A pause.
Everyone froze.
“She was trying to expose the real person responsible.””
Richard’s face changed.
Grant looked at him.
The recording continued.
“The mistake was trusting the wrong person.””
A sound of confusion moved through the room.
Then the voice said:
“The person who destroyed Amelia’s life was not a Harrington.””
Silence.
“Not a Whitmore.””
Elena felt her heartbeat accelerate.
“Because the person responsible belonged to neither family.””
Grant looked at the phone.
The recording continued.
“She was someone Amelia loved.””
Everyone looked confused.
Someone she loved?
Then the voice said:
“Her closest friend.””
Elena froze.
Friend.
A name entered her mind.
Someone from her mother’s past.
Someone who had always been described as kind.
Someone who had helped raise her.
Someone who had been there after Amelia disappeared.
She slowly looked toward Vivian.
But Vivian shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was terrified.
“Not me.””
The recording continued.
“Amelia discovered the truth too late. She discovered that the person closest to her had been manipulating both families.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Who?””
The recording paused.
Then came the final sentence.
“The woman you trusted was never trying to protect Elena.””
The ballroom held its breath.
“She was trying to control what Elena would become.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Elena’s phone buzzed again.
A final message.
No photograph.
No warning.
Just a location.
And a name.
*Sophia Mercer.*
*She is alive.*
Elena stared at the screen.
Her entire body went cold.
After twenty-two years…
after all the lies…
after believing she had lost everyone…
someone was telling her the impossible.
Her sister was alive.
Grant looked at her.
“What does it say?””
Elena looked up.
Tears filled her eyes.
“My sister.””
A pause.
“She’s alive.””
Everyone froze.
Then another message appeared.
This one from the same unknown number.
*Come alone if you want to know why your mother disappeared.*
Elena stared.
Grant immediately shook his head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I have to go.””
“You don’t know who sent that.””
“I know.””
She looked at Lily.
“I know someone has been hiding the truth for twenty-two years.””
Grant stepped closer.
“Then don’t go alone.””
Elena hesitated.
Because a part of her wanted to trust him.
But another part remembered the empty apartment.
The unanswered calls.
The months without him.
“I can’t.””
Grant’s face fell.
“Elena.””
She looked at him.
“I need to know who I am.””
Then she turned.
Because somewhere in Boston…
someone who had been erased for twenty-two years was waiting.
And that person might be the only one who knew the final secret.
May you like
Why Amelia Harrington disappeared.
And why Elena Mercer had been hidden from her own family.
