Chapter 6: The Secret Written Before Lily Was Born
Elena felt the room tilt.
For eight months, every question had led back to one person.
Grant.
Why did he leave?
Why did he disappear?
Why did he choose another woman?
Why did he let his daughter grow up without him?
But now, standing in the middle of a ruined wedding, surrounded by people who had spent years hiding the truth, Elena realized something terrifying.
She had been asking the wrong question.
The secret had never only been about Grant.
It had always been about her.
“What do you mean?”” Elena asked.
Her voice was barely steady.
Natalie looked at Lily.
Then at Elena.
“I mean everyone has been watching the wrong person.””
Grant stepped forward.
“Natalie, stop.””
But Natalie shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes were filled with regret.
“You had your chance to tell her.””
Grant looked away.
Elena noticed.
Again.
Everyone knew something except her.
“What does that mean?””
Natalie took a slow breath.
“Before Lily was born, there was a medical report.””
Elena frowned.
“A medical report?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Richard.
“And your father knows about it.””
Elena turned.
“My father?””
Richard Harrington’s face became unreadable.
That was when Elena knew.
He knew.
Another secret.
Another person who had decided she was not allowed to know her own life.
“What report?”” Elena asked.
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Richard spoke.
“Not here.””
Elena stared at him.
“Why?””
His eyes moved toward the guests still standing nearby.
“Because some things should not be discussed in front of strangers.””
Elena looked around the ballroom.
At the people who had watched her humiliation.
At the people who had whispered about her.
At the people who had seen her walk in carrying a baby while everyone assumed she was the villain.
Then she looked back at Richard.
“Strangers?””
Her voice hardened.
“My entire life has been discussed behind closed doors by people who thought I didn’t deserve a seat at the table.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t get to decide where I hear the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard’s expression tightened.
For years, people had obeyed him.
But Elena didn’t.
Not anymore.
Natalie reached into her purse and pulled out a small folder.
“I found this in my father’s office.””
Richard immediately reacted.
“You stole that?””
Natalie looked at him.
“I saved it.””
She handed the folder to Elena.
“Because I knew one day you would need it.””
Elena opened it.
Inside were hospital documents.
Her hands started shaking.
She recognized the name at the top.
Her name.
Elena Mercer.
She read the first page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Grant stepped closer.
“Elena?””
She looked up.
Her face had gone pale.
“This says my pregnancy was classified.””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Natalie.
“Why?””
Natalie looked at Richard.
Because the answer belonged to him.
Richard finally spoke.
“Because your pregnancy was connected to a legal investigation.””
Elena stared.
“What investigation?””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“What investigation?””
His voice became quieter.
“Your biological mother.””
The words hit her like a physical blow.
Elena froze.
“My mother?””
Nobody in the room moved.
She had not heard that name in years.
Not like this.
Not as part of a secret.
Her mother had died when Elena was young.
A woman she barely remembered.
A woman whose photographs had been kept hidden away.
A woman everyone described as kind.
Gentle.
Ordinary.
“What does my mother have to do with Lily?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“More than you know.””
Elena closed the folder.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No more half-truths.””
She looked at everyone.
“I want everything.””
Grant watched her.
And for the first time that night, he looked like he understood.
Elena was not fighting for him anymore.
She was fighting for herself.
Richard sighed.
“Your mother worked for the Harrington family before she died.””
Elena frowned.
“What?””
“She was not just an employee.””
A pause.
“She was involved in a financial matter that became dangerous.””
Elena shook her head.
“My mother was a nurse.””
“Yes.””
Richard looked away.
“But she also discovered information she was never supposed to find.””
The room became colder.
“What information?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Natalie did.
“She found out the Harrington family was hiding illegal financial transfers.””
Everyone looked at her.
Richard’s expression darkened.
“That is an accusation.””
Natalie held his gaze.
“It’s the truth.””
Celeste looked at her father.
“Dad?””
Richard ignored her.
Elena stared.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes,” Natalie said.
“And she died because of it?””
Nobody answered.
But Elena saw their faces.
She saw the fear.
And she knew.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“No, you don’t get to stand here and tell me my mother was part of some family secret.””
She looked at Richard.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew who she was.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Richard’s silence was devastating.
Elena stepped back.
The pain was different now.
This was not about a broken relationship.
This was about an entire lifetime of missing pieces.
She looked at Grant.
“Did you know?””
Grant shook his head immediately.
“No.””
“Your family never told you?””
“No.””
She searched his face.
And believed him.
Because for once, he looked as lost as she felt.
Natalie continued.
“When Grant met you, his family realized who you were.””
Elena frowned.
“What?””
“They recognized your last name.””
“My last name?””
“Yes.””
Natalie looked at the folder.
“Mercer.””
The way she said it made the name sound different.
Important.
“Your mother’s name was not just a name.””
Elena looked down.
“She had another identity.””
Richard interrupted.
“That is enough.””
Everyone turned.
Because his voice was different.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Celeste noticed too.
“Dad.””
Richard looked at her.
“Stop.””
She stared.
“You’re scared.””
Richard said nothing.
“You’re actually scared.””
For the first time, Celeste saw her father not as a powerful businessman.
But as someone cornered.
Elena opened the folder again.
There was one more page.
A handwritten note.
The handwriting looked familiar.
Her breath caught.
She knew that handwriting.
She had seen it on birthday cards.
On old recipes.
On the few things her mother left behind.
Her mother’s handwriting.
With trembling fingers, Elena unfolded the note.
Only one sentence was written.
*If anything happens to me, protect Elena from the Harringtons and the Whitmores.*
Her knees nearly gave out.
Grant caught her arm.
“Elena.””
She pulled away.
Not because she hated him.
Because she was overwhelmed.
“My mother knew.””
Nobody spoke.
“My mother knew.””
Natalie nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Elena looked at Richard.
“And you knew she knew.””
Richard looked away.
That was all she needed.
The truth was finally becoming clear.
The families had not feared Lily.
They had feared what Elena could uncover.
What her existence represented.
What her mother had left behind.
Then Grant noticed something.
A second page behind the note.
“Elena.””
She looked at him.
“There’s more.””
She turned the page.
A birth record.
Not Lily’s.
Hers.
Her eyes moved across the document.
Then stopped.
Her entire body went still.
“What?””
Celeste stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Elena couldn’t answer.
Grant looked at the page.
And his expression changed.
Because he saw it too.
The impossible detail.
The one thing nobody had expected.
Natalie whispered:
“That’s why they were afraid.””
Elena looked up.
Her voice barely worked.
“Why?””
Natalie looked at Lily.
Then at Elena.
“Because Lily is not the first person in your family they tried to erase.””
A chill moved through the room.
Elena looked back at the paper.
At the name listed under her birth information.
A name she had never seen before.
A name that changed everything.
Because according to the document…
May you like
Elena Mercer was not a Mercer.
And her entire life had been built on a lie.
