Chapter 4: The Person Who Ordered the Betrayal

Elena stared at the message on her phone.

The ballroom noise faded into something distant and meaningless.

All she could see were the words.

*You think Grant abandoned you. You’re wrong. Ask him who ordered it.*

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

For eight months, she had carried one belief like a wound.

Grant left because he chose to.

Because when things became difficult, he ran.

Because the man who promised he would stand beside her had looked at his newborn daughter and still walked away.

But now someone was saying there was more.

Someone was saying Grant had not been the one who started this.

“Elena?””

Grant’s voice pulled her back.

She looked up.

He was watching her face.

And for once, he looked afraid for her.

Not himself.

Her.

“What happened?”” he asked.

She hesitated.

Then turned the phone toward him.

The moment he read the message, his expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Elena saw it immediately.

“You know who sent this.””

Grant looked away.

That was the answer.

Celeste stepped closer.

“What message?””

Nobody responded.

“Grant.””

Her voice was sharper.

“What message?””

Elena slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone says Grant didn’t leave me because he wanted to.””

Celeste looked at him.

“Is that true?””

Grant stayed silent.

The silence was becoming his confession.

Richard Harrington stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Elena looked at him.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand enough.””

She held the phone closer.

“You’re all afraid.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“This is bigger than your personal feelings.””

Elena almost laughed.

“My personal feelings?””

She looked around the room.

“My daughter’s entire life was changed because of someone else’s decision.””

The room went quiet.

“She grew up without her father because powerful people decided they knew what was best.””

Grant flinched.

Because he knew she was right.

Elena looked at him.

“Didn’t she?””

Grant looked down.

Celeste noticed.

“You did know.””

Grant looked at her.

“Celeste…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You knew more than you told me.””

He didn’t answer.

Her eyes filled.

“How much?””

Grant took a breath.

“More than I should have.””

“That is not an answer.””

His voice dropped.

“I knew my father was involved.””

The words shocked everyone.

Even Vivian looked surprised.

Celeste stared.

“Your father?””

Grant nodded slowly.

“My family found out about Elena before Lily was born.””

Elena froze.

“What?””

Grant looked at her.

“I never told you because I didn’t want you scared.””

Her expression hardened.

“Don’t do that.””

“What?””

“Don’t rewrite what happened.””

Elena stepped closer.

“You didn’t hide it because you wanted to protect me.””

Grant looked at her.

“You hid it because you were protecting yourself.””

He had no response.

Because she was right.

Again.

Grant looked around the ballroom.

At his family.

At the Harringtons.

At the people who had spent years controlling his choices.

“My father found out when Elena went to the hospital.””

Celeste frowned.

“Why?””

Grant swallowed.

“Because someone at the hospital recognized my name.””

Elena’s heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Grant looked at her.

“It means my family knew about Lily before I did.””

The words felt impossible.

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

Grant nodded.

“Yes.””

“You’re saying your family knew I was pregnant?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

Grant looked away.

“No.””

Anger flashed across Elena’s face.

“You knew?””

Grant’s voice broke.

“I found out after.””

She stared.

“After what?””

“After my father met with me.””

The memory clearly hurt him.

And for the first time, Elena wondered if she had ever truly seen what happened after he disappeared.

Not that she wanted to forgive him.

Not yet.

But she wanted the truth.

“What did he say?””

Grant looked toward the large windows overlooking the city.

His voice became quieter.

“He told me that if I stayed with you, everything would collapse.””

Celeste whispered:

“Collapse?””

Grant nodded.

“He said the Whitmore name would be destroyed.””

Richard interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

Grant turned toward him.

“No.””

The room froze.

Because nobody had ever heard Grant speak to Richard that way.

“You don’t get to control this anymore.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Grant laughed quietly.

“A mistake?””

He looked around.

“My daughter is eight months old.””

His voice cracked.

“I missed her first smile.””

Elena looked down.

“She said her first word last week.””

Grant’s eyes moved toward Lily.

“What was it?””

Elena hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

“Dada.””

The room went silent.

Grant closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was immediate.

Celeste watched him.

And something inside her broke.

Not because she forgave him.

Because she realized there was a part of his life she would never know.

A part he had hidden.

A part that had existed before she entered the story.

Richard stepped forward.

“This emotional performance changes nothing.””

Grant looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Richard’s face remained controlled.

“I protected you.””

“No.””

Grant shook his head.

“You protected the family name.””

Richard’s silence confirmed it.

Grant looked at Vivian.

“Did you know too?””

Vivian hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Grant laughed bitterly.

“Everyone knew.””

Elena looked at the Harrington family.

“How many people were involved?””

Nobody answered.

Then Natalie spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

Natalie walked toward the center of the room.

“There is something else you need to know.””

Celeste looked at her sister.

“What else?””

Natalie looked at Grant.

Then Elena.

“The agreement wasn’t just about ending the relationship.””

Grant’s face changed.

“Natalie.””

She ignored him.

“It was about making sure Elena would disappear.””

Elena felt cold.

“What?””

Natalie took a breath.

“There were plans to move Grant overseas.””

Celeste stared.

“Overseas?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

Natalie looked at Grant.

“Five years.””

The ballroom erupted again.

Elena stared at Grant.

“You were going to leave the country?””

Grant shook his head.

“No.””

“But they planned it.””

“Yes.””

“Did you agree?””

That question destroyed him.

Because the answer mattered.

Grant looked down.

“I considered it.””

Elena’s face fell.

Even after everything.

Even after all the revelations.

That hurt.

Because there was still a part of him that had been willing.

Grant saw her reaction.

“Elena, I was twenty-eight. I was terrified.””

She looked at him.

“And I was alone.””

The simple sentence cut deeper than anger.

Grant had no defense.

No explanation.

Just regret.

Celeste stepped away from him.

“I need air.””

She turned.

“Celeste.””

She stopped.

But did not look back.

“Don’t.””

Her voice trembled.

“Don’t say my name like you’re worried about me.””

Grant went silent.

“Because for months, I was planning a wedding with a man who was already living another life.””

She walked away.

Her white dress moved across the golden floor.

A bride leaving her own wedding.

Nobody stopped her.

Because nobody knew what to say.

Outside the ballroom, cameras flashed.

The leaked documents had already spread.

Guests whispered as they left.

The perfect wedding was now the biggest scandal in Boston.

But inside the ballroom, Elena remained standing.

Holding Lily.

Holding the truth.

And still wondering what else she did not know.

Because the message had not answered one question.

It had only created another.

Who ordered Grant to leave?

Her phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

Elena opened it.

Her breath stopped.

It was an image of Grant sitting in a car outside her apartment eight months ago.

The night she thought he abandoned her.

The night he disappeared.

But the timestamp showed something impossible.

Grant had not been leaving.

He had been coming back.

And sitting beside him in the car was the person Elena least expected.

The person who had told Grant to walk away.

The person who had destroyed everything.

Elena looked at the photograph.

May you like

Then slowly raised her eyes toward Vivian Harrington.

Because the person in the passenger seat was her.
