Chapter 5: The Night Everything Was Taken Away

Elena could not move.

The photograph on her phone felt heavier than the baby in her arms.

She stared at it again.

And again.

As if looking one more time would somehow change what she was seeing.

The image was clear.

Too clear.

Grant sat in the driver’s seat of a black sedan parked outside her apartment building.

His hands were gripping the steering wheel.

His face was turned toward the building.

Toward her home.

Toward the place where she had spent night after night waiting for him.

But he was not alone.

In the passenger seat was Vivian Harrington.

The same woman who had stood in the ballroom and claimed she was protecting her daughter.

The same woman who had known about Lily.

The same woman who had watched Elena walk through pregnancy alone.

Elena slowly lowered the phone.

“Why?””

The word came out barely above a whisper.

Nobody answered.

Vivian’s expression changed.

For the first time that night, she looked exposed.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just caught.

Grant saw the photograph in Elena’s hand.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

Elena looked at him.

“You tell me.””

Grant stepped closer.

“Elena…”

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“You knew.””

Grant stopped.

“I knew Vivian met with me.””

The answer shocked her.

“But you didn’t tell me.””

He looked away.

Because he knew there was no excuse.

Vivian lifted her chin.

“I was trying to prevent something worse.””

Elena turned toward her.

“Prevent what?””

Vivian looked at Lily.

Then back at Elena.

“You think this is a simple story. A man leaves a woman because he’s weak. A rich family destroys someone because they’re cruel.””

She paused.

“It’s more complicated than that.””

Elena’s grip tightened.

“Then explain.””

Vivian looked at Grant.

“Tell her.””

Grant remained silent.

That silence angered Elena more than anything.

“Tell me.””

He looked at her.

“I went to see my father the night after Lily was born.””

Elena’s expression changed.

“You told me you were sick.””

“I lied.””

The honesty hurt.

“I know.””

Grant swallowed.

“My father had found out about the baby. He said if I didn’t end things with you, he would take control of everything.””

Elena shook her head.

“You keep saying he would take control.””

She stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Grant hesitated.

“My shares in the company. My position. My inheritance.””

Elena stared.

“So you chose money.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“You chose your future over ours.””

Grant looked destroyed.

“I thought I was choosing the only way to keep you safe.””

Elena laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Safe?””

She looked down at Lily.

“She didn’t know your voice for eight months.””

Grant closed his eyes.

“She didn’t know her father.””

Elena looked back at him.

“That was safe?””

The room fell silent.

Even Vivian had no answer.

Grant looked like he wanted to disappear.

But Elena wasn’t finished.

“Why was she there?””

She pointed at the photograph.

“Why was Vivian sitting beside you?””

Grant looked at Vivian.

Vivian answered.

“Because I was the one who arranged the meeting.””

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Vivian remained calm.

“Because Grant was too emotional to make the right decision.””

Grant looked at her sharply.

“Don’t.””

But Vivian continued.

“You loved her.””

She looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

Elena froze.

“What?””

Vivian turned toward her.

“Grant was willing to destroy his entire life for you.””

Grant looked angry.

“Stop talking.””

“No.””

Vivian’s voice hardened.

“For once, you will hear the truth.””

She faced Elena.

“Grant came to my house three days before your daughter was born.””

Elena looked at Grant.

“Why?””

Grant didn’t answer.

Vivian did.

“He wanted to leave everything behind.””

Elena’s breath caught.

“He wanted to disappear with you.””

Grant looked down.

Because it was true.

Elena stared.

“You were going to?””

A long pause.

Then Grant nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt in a different way.

Because she had spent months believing he never chose her.

But now she was learning he had almost chosen her.

Almost.

“What happened?””

Vivian answered.

“I convinced him not to.””

Elena looked at her.

“Of course you did.””

Vivian ignored the anger.

“I showed him what would happen.””

She walked slowly toward the table where abandoned champagne glasses still sat.

“Your daughter would have no legal protection. No financial security. No connection to the family that could support her.””

Elena shook her head.

“That was a lie.””

“No.””

Vivian looked at her.

“It wasn’t.””

The certainty in her voice made Elena pause.

Vivian continued.

“Richard would have destroyed him.””

Grant looked away.

Because he knew it was true.

“My husband had lawyers ready.””

Vivian’s voice lowered.

“He had evidence prepared to make you look unstable.””

Elena’s face changed.

“What?””

“He would have claimed Grant was manipulated. He would have claimed you trapped him.””

The room went cold.

“He would have tried to take Lily.””

Elena instinctively held her daughter closer.

“No.””

Vivian looked at her.

“That is why I told Grant to leave.””

Elena shook her head.

“You don’t get to call that protection.””

Vivian’s expression softened slightly.

“I knew you would hate me.””

“I do.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Elena looked at her.

“You watched me suffer.””

Vivian nodded.

“Yes.””

No excuse.

No denial.

Just yes.

“And you did nothing.””

“I did what I thought was necessary.””

Elena stared.

“You all use that sentence.””

She looked at Grant.

“My whole life was destroyed by people who thought they knew what was necessary.””

Grant looked away.

Because he knew he was included.

Celeste returned to the ballroom doorway.

Nobody noticed her at first.

She had heard enough.

Her eyes were red.

But she was standing straighter now.

She looked at Vivian.

“Mom.””

Vivian turned.

Celeste held a stack of papers.

The documents from Natalie.

“I found something.””

Everyone went quiet.

Celeste walked forward.

“I went through the agreement.””

Grant frowned.

“What agreement?””

She looked at him.

“The one your family made with mine.””

Grant froze.

Celeste held up a page.

“And there’s something strange.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“This contract was signed before Lily was born.””

Silence.

Elena frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Celeste nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

She looked at Grant.

“Your family knew about Elena before she gave birth.””

Grant stared.

“But how?””

Celeste turned the page.

“Because the agreement mentions the child.””

The room went still.

Even Vivian looked shocked.

“What?””

Celeste read the line.

“‘Any future child resulting from the relationship between Grant Whitmore and Elena Mercer must be kept separate from public involvement.’”

Elena felt like the air had disappeared.

Future child.

Not possible.

Unless someone had known.

Unless someone had planned for it.

She looked at Grant.

“You knew?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I swear.””

But nobody believed anything anymore.

Celeste looked at the final page.

“There’s a signature.””

She lifted her eyes.

“Not Grant’s.””

Richard’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Celeste whispered:

“Dad.””

Richard stepped back.

And everyone saw it.

He knew.

The signature belonged to him.

Elena stared.

The Harringtons had known.

The Whitmores had known.

Everyone had been preparing for her daughter’s existence before she was even born.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another unknown message.

This time only three words.

*Ask about the mother.*

Elena frowned.

The mother?

She looked at the screen.

Then at Vivian.

Because suddenly, she understood.

The secret was not only about Lily.

It was about why everyone had been so desperate to control the child.

And why Grant’s family had feared Elena from the very beginning.

Before she could speak, Natalie rushed back into the ballroom.

Her face was pale.

“Elena.””

Everyone turned.

Natalie looked at Lily.

Then at the documents.

And whispered:

“There’s something you were never told about your daughter’s birth.””

Elena’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Natalie took a shaky breath.

“Lily wasn’t the reason they tried to separate you and Grant.””

A pause.

“She was the reason they were terrified.””

Elena looked down at her sleeping daughter.

And for the first time, she wondered if the biggest secret of all…

May you like

was not who Lily’s father was.

But who Lily’s mother really was.
