Chapter 9: The Daughter They Never Saw Coming

The morning after we uncovered the recording, the Carter Ocean Estate became the center of a storm.

Not the kind caused by the ocean outside.

The kind caused by truth.

For years, my family had lived behind carefully built walls.

But walls only protect secrets until someone finds the cracks.

And now those cracks were everywhere.

Alexander spent the entire night reviewing the evidence.

Contracts.

Financial records.

Hidden accounts.

The recording from Richard Hayes.

Everything pointed to one conclusion.

My father had been betrayed by the person he trusted most.

But the truth was more complicated than a simple villain and victim story.

Because my mother had played a part.

And that was something I had to accept.

I found Victoria alone in the garden the next morning.

She was sitting beneath the old tree where my father used to sketch designs.

For once, she wasn’t dressed for appearances.

No expensive jewelry.

No perfect makeup.

Just my mother.

A woman who looked tired.

“I knew you would come here,” she said.

I stopped a few feet away.

“How?””

She looked at the tree.

“Because your father brought you here when you were little.””

I swallowed.

“You remember?””

A sad smile appeared.

“I remember everything.””

That hurt more than anger.

Because if she remembered, then she knew exactly what she took from me.

“Why did you let me believe he abandoned me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was a coward.””

The honesty surprised me.

She looked down.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting you. That if you hated your father, you would stop searching for him.””

“And did you believe that?””

She was silent.

“No.””

The answer came quietly.

“I knew I was hurting you.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

“I spent years wondering why I wasn’t enough,” I said.

Her expression broke.

“Emma…”

“I thought maybe that was why you treated me differently. Maybe I reminded you of something you hated.””

She covered her mouth.

“I never hated you.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you make me feel like I was nothing?””

She cried silently.

And I realized something painful.

An apology couldn’t erase years.

But sometimes the truth was the first step toward healing.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you yet,” I said.

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I want to know everything.””

She looked at me.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then she whispered:

“Richard Hayes planned your father’s downfall years before it happened.””

I listened.

“He knew Thomas was too honest. He knew your father would never allow him to steal from the company.””

“So he removed him.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped him.””

Her eyes closed.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

Even though I already knew.

“How?””

She looked away.

“He threatened you.””

My chest tightened.

“He said he had people watching you. He said if Thomas returned, you would disappear.””

I remembered being a child.

The strange phone calls.

The locked doors.

The sudden move to a different neighborhood.

My mother becoming colder.

I had always thought those things happened randomly.

They didn’t.

“They wanted me afraid,” I whispered.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“But I made the worst mistake.””

“What?””

“I let fear turn me into someone who hurt the person I was trying to protect.””

I had no answer.

Because that was the hardest truth.

Sometimes people could love you and still damage you.

Sometimes intentions didn’t erase consequences.

A car stopped outside the mansion.

Alexander walked toward us.

His expression was serious.

“We have a problem.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

“Richard knows we have the evidence.””

My heart dropped.

“How?””

Alexander looked toward the house.

“Someone leaked our location.””

My mother went pale.

“No.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Victoria, who else knew Thomas was alive?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told us everything.

“Only one person.””

“Who?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“Olivia.””

I froze.

“My sister?””

My mother nodded.

“She found out years ago.””

I couldn’t believe it.

Olivia.

The person who laughed when I wore an apron.

The person who told me I knew my place.

She knew.

All this time.

Alexander immediately called Marcus.

Within an hour, we discovered the truth.

Olivia had been meeting with Richard Hayes.

Not because she was forced.

Because she wanted something.

The security footage showed her entering a private office downtown.

When she left, she was carrying an envelope.

My stomach twisted.

“What was in it?””

Alexander looked at the report.

“Money.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The person who spent her life chasing status had chosen money over family.

Then my phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered.

“Emma.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“You need to listen to me.””

“Why would I?””

“Because Richard is going to destroy everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

The admission shocked me.

“I made a mistake.””

“You sold us.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought I was making a deal.””

“What deal?””

She started crying.

“He told me he would make me famous. He said I would be the face of a new company.””

I felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Just disappointment.

“You traded your family for attention.””

“I know.””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“But I found something.””

“What?””

“A file.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What file?””

“Richard’s real plan.””

Alexander stepped closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Olivia continued.

“He doesn’t just want the company.””

“Then what does he want?””

Her voice lowered.

“He wants Emma.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“Why?””

“Because your father’s shares were transferred to you.””

I looked at Alexander.

He nodded slowly.

My father’s final move.

The one Richard never expected.

Olivia continued:

“He needs you to sign them over.””

I stared at the ocean outside.

The girl everyone ignored.

The girl nobody thought mattered.

I was the person standing between Richard Hayes and everything he wanted.

Then Olivia said something that made my blood run cold.

“He’s coming to the mansion tonight.””

The call ended.

Alexander looked at me.

“Are you scared?””

I thought about the years I spent being afraid.

Afraid of my mother.

Afraid of disappointing people.

Afraid of being invisible forever.

Then I looked at the house where all of it began.

“No.””

I picked up my father’s old blueprint.

“Not anymore.””

Because Richard Hayes had spent years believing I was powerless.

May you like

Tonight, he was going to learn the truth.

The person he ignored was the person who would end him.
