Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Left
I forgot how to breathe.
The world stopped.
The abandoned building disappeared.
The years disappeared.
There was only one person standing in front of me.
A man I had buried in my heart.
A man I had missed every day of my life.
“Dad?””
The word came out like a child’s whisper.
Thomas Carter stared at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Emma.””
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t question.
I just ran into his arms.
For a moment, everything I had lost came rushing back.
His familiar scent.
The warmth of his embrace.
The feeling of being someone’s priority.
“I thought you were gone,” I cried.
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His arms tightened around me.
“I tried.””
I stepped back.
“Then why?””
Before he answered, my mother spoke.
“Because I stopped him.””
I turned.
Victoria stood there, tears running down her face.
I felt something inside me break.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“For years?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to scream.
But seeing my father alive made everything more complicated.
“Why?””
My mother looked at Thomas.
“Because if he came back, they would kill him.””
“Who?””
Thomas answered.
“Richard Hayes.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“My father?””
Thomas nodded.
“I discovered what Richard was doing.””
Alexander’s face became unreadable.
“He stole from the company.””
“Yes.””
“And my mother?””
Thomas looked away.
“Your mother was involved.””
My heart sank.
Victoria closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know how far it had gone.””
Thomas continued.
“Richard used Victoria’s fear against her.””
My mother whispered:
“He threatened Emma.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“You lied because you were scared?””
She nodded.
“He told me if Thomas exposed him, you would disappear too.””
I remembered all those years.
The coldness.
The distance.
The way she pushed me away.
“You made me hate you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away from the truth.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because for the first time, I saw the woman behind the cruelty.
Not an excuse.
Not forgiveness.
Just a person who had made terrible choices.
Thomas looked at me.
“I am sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Why didn’t you write?””
“I did.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He looked at Victoria.
She looked away.
My father’s voice broke.
“I wrote you hundreds of letters.””
My mother whispered:
“I hid them.””
The pain of that confession was almost worse than the lie.
All those birthdays.
All those years.
I thought my father forgot me.
But he never did.
Alexander stepped away quietly.
Giving us space.
Later that night, we returned to the mansion.
But it didn’t feel like the same place.
Because the truth had finally entered the rooms where lies had lived for years.
My father and I sat in his old office.
“I watched you grow from far away,” he said.
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Friends sent me pictures.””
I smiled sadly.
“You saw me?””
“Every year.””
“Why didn’t you come?””
His eyes filled.
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
I looked at the desk.
“The foundation.””
He nodded.
“What?””
“The truth your father mentioned.””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
“My final evidence.””
I stared.
“Where was it?””
“Hidden in the foundation of the first building I ever designed.””
My father looked at me.
“Your father’s company was never stolen completely.””
Alexander entered the doorway.
“You found the remaining shares.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
My father handed him the key.
Inside was a small storage device.
Alexander connected it to his laptop.
A video appeared.
Richard Hayes.
My father’s old partner.
My blood ran cold.
Then Richard spoke.
“I know Thomas will try to expose me.””
The video continued.
“I know his daughter may become a problem one day.””
Alexander’s face hardened.
A second voice appeared.
Victoria.
Younger.
Terrified.
“I’ll do what you want.””
I looked at my mother.
The recording continued.
Richard smiled.
“Good. Because Emma Carter will never know who she really is.””
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Alexander whispered:
“My father planned everything.””
My father nodded.
“But he made one mistake.””
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He underestimated you.””
I stared at the screen.
At the truth.
At everything stolen from us.
And I realized something.
For years, everyone thought I was the weakest person in the family.
The invisible daughter.
The girl by the sink.
May you like
But the one thing Richard Hayes never considered was this:
The person everyone ignored was the only person who could bring him down.
