Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden In The Walls

The first thing Alexander did after the call was hire a private investigator.

The second thing he did was tell me something I never expected.

“You need to be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Because of my mother?””

“Because whoever covered up what happened to your father has protected that secret for years.””

I looked around the mansion.

The beautiful walls.

The expensive furniture.

The perfect image.

“All this time…”

Alexander nodded.

“Sometimes the most beautiful things are built on the darkest foundations.””

I spent the next several hours searching through my father’s office.

Not because I expected to find anything.

Because I needed to feel close to him.

Every drawer held pieces of his life.

Sketches.

Letters.

Old photographs.

Then I found something strange.

A section of the bookshelf didn’t fit properly.

One corner was slightly damaged.

I pushed it.

The entire shelf moved.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

My heart started racing.

“Alexander.””

He came immediately.

Inside the compartment was a small metal box.

No lock.

No label.

Just my father’s initials.

T.C.

I opened it carefully.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And a letter.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Emma,

If you are reading this, something happened that prevented me from telling you myself.

I stopped.

My eyes filled instantly.

He had written to me.

Not my mother.

Not anyone else.

Me.

Your mother will tell you I left because I wanted a different life.

That is not true.

I never left you.

I kept reading.

I discovered someone inside the company was stealing from our projects. When I tried to expose them, they threatened everything I loved.

You.

I covered my mouth.

Alexander stood silently beside me.

The letter continued.

I trusted people I should not have trusted. If anything happens to me, remember this:

The truth is hidden where the foundation begins.

I looked at Alexander.

“The foundation?””

He took the letter.

“Your father loved symbolism.””

I searched through the documents.

Then I found a photograph.

A construction site.

A building under development.

On the back was written:

“Project H.””

Alexander looked at it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He pointed at the image.

“This project.””

“What about it?””

“It was never completed.””

“Why?””

“Because the land was sold after Thomas disappeared.””

I looked closer.

A group of people stood near the construction site.

My father.

My mother.

And another man.

I recognized him.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen his picture online.

“Who is that?””

Alexander went silent.

Then answered:

“Richard Hayes.””

His father.

The room seemed to tilt.

“Your father?””

Alexander nodded slowly.

“This changes everything.””

Before I could ask why, my mother walked in.

She stopped when she saw the open box.

Her face lost all color.

“No.””

The word escaped her.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You found it.””

I stood.

“You knew about this?””

She looked at the letter in my hand.

“Emma, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You lied to me for my entire life.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You keep saying that!””

The room echoed.

My mother looked broken.

But I couldn’t forget all the years she ignored me.

All the moments she made me feel worthless.

“What did you do?””

She closed her eyes.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

She looked at Alexander.

Then at me.

“A choice that kept you alive.””

The words stopped me.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the box.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I loved your father.””

I froze.

It was the first time she had ever sounded human.

“I loved him more than anything.””

“Then why did you betray him?””

She looked at the letter.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of who?””

She whispered:

“Richard Hayes.””

Alexander went completely still.

“My father?””

My mother nodded.

“No one knows the real reason Thomas disappeared.””

She looked at me.

“Because Richard Hayes made sure he couldn’t come back.””

The room fell silent.

Then Alexander’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression hardened.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked at us.

“The investigator found something.””

“What?””

He stared at the documents.

“Your father’s disappearance was officially recorded as an accident.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“But?””

Alexander’s eyes met mine.

“The report was altered.””

A pause.

“The original report says Thomas Carter was last seen alive at the Carter Ocean Estate.””

I looked around the mansion.

My home.

The place where I grew up.

The place where my father vanished.

And then Alexander said the words that changed everything.

“Emma…”

He held up another document.

“Your father didn’t disappear from this house.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“He was taken from here.””
