Chapter 2: The Name On The Contract

The silence after Alexander Hayes’ question felt heavier than the entire mansion.

My mother’s perfect smile cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Victoria Carter was never afraid of anything.

Except losing control.

“Mr. Hayes, I think there has been a misunderstanding,” she said quickly.

Alexander didn’t look at her.

He was still watching me.

I didn’t know why.

That scared me more than anything.

“I’m sorry,” I said quietly.

“I should get back to work.””

I reached for another glass.

Alexander stopped me.

“Work?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

“Washing dishes?””

I nodded.

My mother laughed nervously.

“She likes helping around the house.””

Helping.

That was the word she always used.

Never forced.

Never ordered.

Helping.

As if I chose it.

Alexander finally turned toward her.

“Does she?””

My mother opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Olivia stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, Emma has always been different.””

I looked at my sister.

Different.

Another word people used when they wanted to make you feel like a problem.

Alexander glanced at her.

“Different how?””

Olivia hesitated.

“She’s just quieter.””

Charlotte smiled.

“She prefers staying in the background.””

I looked away.

Because that part was true.

But they never asked why.

My mother placed a hand on Alexander’s arm.

“Please, let’s not focus on unimportant details. Dinner is ready.””

He removed her hand gently.

“I’m interested in details.””

The way he said it made everyone uncomfortable.

My mother forced a laugh.

“Of course.””

We moved into the dining room.

Everyone sat at the long table.

Everyone except me.

I stood near the wall, waiting for instructions.

Alexander noticed.

“Is she not eating?””

My mother looked surprised.

“Emma?””

“Yes.””

“She already ate.””

I looked at my mother.

I hadn’t.

But I didn’t say anything.

Alexander studied my face.

He knew.

Somehow, he knew.

“Bring another plate,” he said.

A servant immediately moved.

My mother whispered, “That’s unnecessary.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Why?””

The question was simple.

But my mother had no answer.

A plate was placed in front of me.

I sat at the end of the table.

For the first time in years.

At my own family’s dinner table.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Then Olivia leaned toward Alexander.

“My mother tells me you recently expanded into international real estate.””

“Yes.””

“That must be exciting.””

“It is.””

Charlotte smiled.

“I’ve always admired ambitious people.””

Alexander nodded politely.

They continued trying to impress him.

They talked about charity events.

Luxury vacations.

Fashion.

Everything they thought a billionaire wanted.

But Alexander kept looking at me.

Finally, he asked:

“Emma, what do you do?””

The question surprised me.

Everyone stared.

I swallowed.

“I’m studying.””

“What?””

“Architecture.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“Architecture?””

I nodded.

“I’ve always liked designing buildings.””

My mother interrupted.

“She has hobbies.””

Alexander ignored her.

“Why architecture?””

I looked down at my plate.

Because nobody had ever asked me that before.

“Because buildings tell stories,” I said.

The table became quiet.

“When someone walks into a building, they should feel something. Safe. Inspired. Welcome.””

Alexander watched me carefully.

“And what kind of buildings do you want to create?””

I thought about it.

“Places where people don’t feel invisible.””

The silence afterward felt different.

Not uncomfortable.

Heavy.

My mother looked angry.

Because she knew.

She knew Alexander wasn’t listening to her daughters anymore.

He was listening to me.

After dinner, everyone moved into the living room.

My mother immediately pulled Alexander aside.

I saw it happen from the hallway.

“Mr. Hayes, I hope you understand tonight was meant to introduce you to Olivia and Charlotte.””

Alexander looked calm.

“And?””

She smiled.

“And they are wonderful women.””

“I’m sure they are.””

The answer wasn’t what she wanted.

She stepped closer.

“Emma has always been difficult.””

My stomach tightened.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“How?””

“She doesn’t understand family expectations.””

“Meaning?””

My mother paused.

“She refuses to be like her sisters.””

Alexander looked toward me.

I was standing near the hallway.

Listening.

Then he asked:

“Does she refuse?””

My mother frowned.

“What?””

“Or did nobody ever give her a choice?””

The room went silent.

My mother’s face hardened.

“You don’t know her.””

“No,” Alexander said.

Then he looked directly at me.

“But I’d like to.””

My breath caught.

Later that night, after Alexander left, my mother exploded.

The second the front door closed, her kindness disappeared.

“What did you do?””

I froze.

“What?””

“You embarrassed me.””

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You sat at the table.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what upset you?””

“You made him notice you.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“I didn’t try to.””

“That’s the problem.””

Olivia crossed her arms.

“Mom, he barely looked at us after talking to her.””

Charlotte’s face twisted with jealousy.

“She probably planned it.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You think I planned being treated like a servant?””

Nobody answered.

My mother stepped closer.

“Listen carefully, Emma. Alexander Hayes is not interested in someone like you.””

Someone like you.

The words were familiar.

But something inside me had changed.

Because tonight, one person had looked at me differently.

And I couldn’t forget it.

The next morning, I found an envelope outside my bedroom door.

There was no name on it.

Only a handwritten note.

I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

A copy of a document.

My hands went cold when I saw the signature.

Alexander Hayes.

And beneath it was a sentence that changed everything:

“Regarding the ownership transfer of Carter Ocean Estate…”

I read the next line.

Then I dropped the paper.

May you like

Because my mother’s mansion wasn’t actually hers.

And Alexander Hayes had just become the person who could take it all away.
