Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

For a long time, nobody spoke.

The house was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

The kind of silence that came before something broke.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“I was there when it happened.””

Her words repeated in his mind.

Again.

And again.

His father’s death.

The night Marcus had buried one of the last connections he had to his childhood.

The night everyone told him it was an accident.

Vanessa had been there.

“Start talking.””

His voice was quiet.

But everyone in the room heard the anger beneath it.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

For the first time since Marcus had known her, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just afraid.

“I didn’t kill him.””

Marcus’s expression didn’t change.

“I didn’t ask that.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at him.

“No more lies.””

That surprised Marcus.

Because Daniel, the man who had helped betray him, was now demanding the truth too.

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Your father called me that night.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to talk about you.””

“About me?””

She nodded.

“He was angry.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“My father was always angry.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“This was different.””

She folded her hands together.

“He said you had become too soft. That you were destroying everything he built.””

Marcus looked away.

He had heard those words before.

Weak.

Emotional.

Soft.

His father had used them like weapons.

Vanessa continued.

“He wanted you removed from the company.””

Marcus looked back.

“Removed how?””

She hesitated.

“Legally.””

The room went cold.

“He had prepared documents.””

Marcus remembered the papers.

The signature.

The plan.

“He was going to take everything.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why were you involved?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Because he offered me something.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“Security.””

The answer disgusted him.

“You helped him because he promised you money?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He promised me a place.””

Marcus said nothing.

She continued.

“He told me you would eventually leave me once you realized I wasn’t enough.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“He knew exactly what to say.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

His daughter was listening quietly.

Too quietly.

He hated that she had been forced to hear all of this.

“You’re saying my father manipulated you.””

“Yes.””

“But you still went along with it.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

Then she whispered:

“But something happened that night.””

Marcus waited.

“He changed his mind.””

Nobody moved.

“About what?””

“About removing you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked toward Nia.

“Because he saw a picture.””

Marcus froze.

“What picture?””

“The picture of you and Nia.””

Marcus said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“He had been looking through your office files. He found a photo of you holding her when she was little.””

Her voice became softer.

“He said something I’ll never forget.””

Marcus waited.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said, ‘Maybe Marcus became the man I couldn’t.’”

The words hit harder than Marcus expected.

Because that sounded like his father.

A man who rarely admitted love.

A man who showed pride through impossible expectations.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me he was canceling everything.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Fear returned.

“He received a call.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I heard him say one thing.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“He said, ‘You don’t understand what you’re asking me to do.’”

The room was silent.

Then:

“He left.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“And?””

“He never came back.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Vanessa looked down.

“No.””

“What happened?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“He crashed his car.””

Marcus froze.

Everyone knew the official story.

A rainy road.

A sudden turn.

An accident.

But now everything felt different.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Marcus.

“Because I wasn’t alone.””

The room went still.

Marcus’s heartbeat grew louder.

“Who was with you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Ethan.””

Marcus felt sick.

The name again.

Ethan.

The person who had been behind everything.

“How?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know how much he knew. I only know he was there after the crash.””

Marcus stared.

“After?””

“Yes.””

“Did he help him?””

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

That single word carried everything.

Marcus stepped backward.

“You’re saying Ethan was there…”

Vanessa nodded.

“And he let him die.””

Nia gasped.

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“Go upstairs.””

“Daddy—”

“Please.””

She looked at him.

Then slowly nodded.

Caleb followed her.

When they were gone, Marcus turned back.

“Why are you telling me now?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because he’s coming after you.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“He already did.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

She grabbed the old document.

“Your father wasn’t trying to remove you because he hated you.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why?””

“Because he discovered Ethan’s plan.””

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

“What plan?””

Vanessa opened another file.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Marcus looked through them.

Then his face changed.

Ethan wasn’t trying to control the company.

He was stealing from it.

For years.

“He was using your father’s anger against you.””

Marcus looked up.

“And you?””

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“I helped him because I thought I was protecting myself.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice.

Ethan.

“You finally know.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“You killed my father.””

A pause.

Then Ethan laughed.

“Careful with accusations.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan sighed.

“Because he was going to ruin everything.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“You mean expose you.””

Another pause.

Then Ethan said:

“You always were smarter than people thought.””

Marcus’s anger exploded.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became calm.

“You destroyed it yourself.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You chose a child over your future.””

The words made Marcus freeze.

Ethan continued.

“And that’s why you were never meant to lead.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Toward Nia.

Then he understood.

This was never about the company.

It was never about Vanessa.

It was never about money.

Ethan believed love was weakness.

And he had spent years trying to prove it.

Marcus whispered:

“You picked the wrong family to destroy.””

Ethan laughed.

“Did I?””

Then the call ended.

A few seconds later, Marcus’s phone received one final message.

A location.

May you like

And four words.

*Come alone. Or else.*
